Discussions, now here now there. Till Mom...

Jesper

The Jespersson family – Dad, Ma, Annika and Jesper – us – had arrived in Stockholm the night before. This very town was the target of the year to us. Yes, as you may know, our habit was travelling every summer to have a look at famous places – tourist attractions – in big cities of Europe.

Utmost important, Dad meant, that Annika and me, his kids, got the chance to learn things from the culture and history itself.

Mom Bitte

(OK. Still, the best of it was that often other exciting things happened, too. In the ordinary present time...)

You wonder: Did Annika and I, when out on travelling with our parents, ever say no to do things that Dad and Mom suggested, or even decided?

Yes of course. But never any of the big things. To one or two of lesser things we made thumbs down. No way, saying. Dull, boring, is resulting in nothing but walking our feet sore. Or »we’re gonna have pain in our heads from that stuff«, (never “ass” was not allowed to that word).

Dad Bosse

And, it worked. Even the school psychologist who came from time to time to see us underlined,

»But you must never be sulky, kids! Neither at home nor at school. But jump some repugnant (what a word!) things you can always do. That is your bloody right! « (Well no, he didn’t say, bloody’, actually)

Anyhow, me and Annika, we volunteered mostly.

Yesterday evening, anyhow, we had entered this special hostel in Stockholm. It is situated in the very middle of the town. And being nothing less than an old sailing ship by the name of »af Chapman«.

Annika

This is a very nice bed&breakfast place, I Jesper, think. You know, when a wind blew up, she started swinging, slightly. And you fell very easily asleep.

Now, around noon, we were on the way to our first culture stuff place. Or tourist attraction, the »Wasa«. It is placed in a big park, called the Djurgarden. In the park you may find other interesting places, too, to visit.

I, Jesper, felt all right and tense. Annika was snoring. One of Pa’s toes was aching a bit.

But –Ma began, in this very moment, declaring that she would prefer to visit the Skansen, instead! In spite of that we since early morning unanimously had decided: the Wasa Museum!

Father didn’t seem to hear, at first.

»From the outside, of this museum you almost cannot get, how tremendous the whole thing is,” crying, and happily throwing his hand up in the air as he often does.

»Come on now, let’s go show our tickets. I have fixed a family discount coupon!« Dad went on.

»The tickets are not cheap, I take it«, Ma said. She always tries to save our money. But not much saving can be done, I think, with such ones like us, a really craving mob.

Stockholm

is the capitol of Sweden, with about one million inhabitants. It is situated in the middle of Sweden, eastwards, at the coast of the Baltic Sea. Also inside the town limits there are many water courses which make it open and attractive.

One of the big waters is the Lake Maelar, Mälaren. According to that, Stockholm sometimes is called The Maelar Queen or Queen of the Lake Maelar. Also Venice of the North.

In Stockholm, the governement of the country of Sweden is situated, as well as the parliament, the Riksdagen.

Since long time back people from other countries have emigrated here. From Finland and the Baltic states, but also from the south of Europe, the Balcans, Middle East and Africa. To escape warfare, political and economical disturbances and fix better living.

Tourists to Stockholm are attracted by the big park

Djurgarden, eastwards. With the famous open air museum Skansen, with all its old cottages, farm houses etc. And also housing a zoo.

Opposite the Skansen is spreading the big tivoli the Grona Lund, with new exclusive merry-go-round stuff every year!

You get yourself there from the City with streetcars, or with ferries if you prefer.

Stockholm has held on to the idea of a general low skyline for its central official buildings. That’s why you see very few skyscrapers and such.

The greatest attraction of it all has the tremendous world of bigger and smaller islands, the skaergarden. That is what most people think, both locals and tourists.

This archipelago is situated in the near region of the Baltic Sea, just outside town but also stretching out southwards and northwards of it, with all this islands and the sea everywhere around. There you can live if you want – most preferable in summertime – sailing, swimming, fishing. Or take trips through it with these big white or redlined ferry ships, heading for Aaland and Finland.
