More praise for Leading Change Step-by-Step

“Jody Spiro offers us a gift in making clear that change is possible and then—drawing on both her field experience and her teaching—lays out in clear and concise ways the tools leaders need to achieve the change they seek.”

—Ellen Schall, dean, Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, New York University

“Jody Spiro’s first-hand expert knowledge of change management provides step-by-step insights on the multiple forces affecting project, organizational, and system change across the educational sector. Her wide-ranging command of principles and best practices are in evidence in every example and case that she tracks from concept through full implementation. Every manager should read this wise and superbly crafted handbook of organizational change.”

—Dan E. Davidson, president, American Councils for International Education

“Jody Spiro has captured the essence of leading change. By providing useful tactics, tools, and tales of the adventures of organizations that have realized dynamic systemic change, she guides readers from the first gleam in the eye of the leader who envisions a different organization through the essentials of maintaining the achieved changes. Unless you are dedicated to maintaining the status quo in your organization, you must read this book!”

—Phillip S. Rogers, Ed.D., executive director, Education Professional Standards Board

“Jody Spiro’s book is essential reading for any social sector leader facing transition and uncertainty. Leaders will become more agile and adaptive thanks to the powerful roadmaps, easy-to-use tools, and concrete examples of what organizations must do to remain relevant in an era of declining resources and rising expectations.”

—Beryl Levinger, Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Public Administration Program at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, a Graduate School of Middlebury College

“Dr. Spiro knows of what she speaks. Her national and international work has served her well as she has prepared a down-to-earth and research-sound process for leading change. This book is not about responding to change, it is about leading change; it is a guide for us to be proactive as opposed to our always being reactive to the constant change around us.”

—Dr. William Callahan, professor and Dean Emeritus, University of Northern Iowa

“Dr. Spiro’s remarkable work Leading Change Step-by-Step is a must for the social work profession. It is both relevant and pertinent to social workers working as agents of change in Macro practice, administration, the establishment of public policy, and the enactment of legislation. Simultaneously, it is perfect for the Micro practitioner working with individuals, couples, families, and organizations. As a social work educator, I highly recommend it to my fellow academicians for use in the classroom.”

—Dr. Cheryl Resnick-Cortes, chair and Program Director of Social Work, Georgian Court University

“Jody Spiro has the unique combination of practical leadership experience in different countries and many years of working with theory. That makes the book the real practical guide how to lead change.”

—Dr. Elena Karpukhina, vice rector, Academy of National Economy under the Government of Russian Federation

“This book is an insightful reflection of Dr. Spiro’s work with the agents of change around the world. Government officials, managers, teachers, and practitioners in my country will benefit from the tactics and tools but will also discover the essence of their own tale.”

—Otilia Ştefania Păcurari, Prof. I dr., National Institute for Magistracy, Romania, and international education consultant

“Leaders in any type of organization will benefit from the information provided. Change is critical in public education today, and the tools and tactics discussed in this book will allow leaders to successfully deploy new initiatives, projects and/or programs.”

—Joe Simpson, Deputy State Superintendent of Public Instruction, State of Wyoming Department of Education

“The need for change in education has never been greater, along with leaders who can articulate a shared vision and organize the resources—human, fiscal, and organizational—necessary to achieve it. This book lays out the steps leaders must take to foster and sustain real change. Its field-tested tools and tales from the front lines of leading change are more than a “how-to” course in organizational leadership in challenging times, they provide an inspiring vision for educational transformation, and a road map for the continuous journey of innovation and discovery that change leadership demands.”

—David Haselkorn, associate commissioner, MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education

“This book provides important information that is helpful to any leader of change as well as tools and strategies that are specific to educators. In the current era of school reform, it is a valuable step-by-step resource to not only implement change but also to sustain it.”

Jody Spiro’s Leading Change Step-by-Step serves as an essential guidebook for education leaders as they journey from planning for change, to securing stakeholder support, to implementing and sustaining strategic reforms. Jody brings together some of the best thinking and hands-on tools to help education leaders understand the full spectrum of a change process and to become more skillful in leading, managing, and engaging people in change. I have used her work over the years in moving forward systemic change in my role as superintendent in Eugene.”

—George Russell, superintendent, Eugene School District 4J, Eugene, Oregon

—Paul J. Thompson, founding principal, Urban Assembly School of Music and Art, Brooklyn, New York

Dedicated to the many colleagues in many places who have been using these tools and inspiring me with their accomplishments

Acknowledgments

This book has been many years in the making. It was born of a sense that there are several useful techniques for leading change that could be translated into tools to assist busy leaders. These techniques reflect, and have their roots in, a rich body of thinking in this field as well as my own career experiences. This includes work I began as head of professional development for the operations department at Chase Manhattan Bank and continued through senior management stints in the public, nonprofit, university, foundation, and international development sectors. Throughout my career, I have shared the lessons I was learning with my graduate students at New York University’s Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. Over more than 18 years, my students have used versions of these tools and materials. Most recently, during my work at The Wallace Foundation, many state and district leaders participating in the Foundation’s education leadership initiative have used these tactics and tools as they pursue lasting change in their education systems.

The ideas and views expressed in this book are mine alone. However, many people have helped along the way. A number of colleagues from across the United States and in other countries as well have made this work come alive with vivid examples. They include: Lois Adams-Rodgers, Victor Bolotov, Joanne Brady, Vladimir Briller, Andrew Cole, Debbie Daniels, Ann Duffy, Larry Finkel, Troyce Fisher, Simon Fenster, Pamela Ferner, Lucia Gliga, Bonnie Gross, Mall Hellum, Roberta Hendee, Erika Hunt, Ronald Israel, Elena Karpuhina, Judith Monseur, Kathleen Nadurak, Ed Miley, Otilia Pacurari, Linda Roman, Robert Santa Morena, John Schoener, Mark Shellinger, Sheila Smith-Anderson, Ann Southworth, Sandra Stein, Marina Vildziuniene, Casel Walker, Lynne Wheat, Jackie O. Wilson, and Cynthia Yoder. Their thoughtful reflections on the tools and tactics through the years have been invaluable.

I would especially like to acknowledge and thank my colleagues at The Wallace Foundation. In particular, Richard Laine has long supported using these tactics and tools to accelerate the important work of Wallace education leadership grantees. Lee Mitgang encouraged me and served as editor for an earlier iteration. Lucas Held and Ayeola Boothe-Kinlaw generously reviewed drafts of this book and provided valuable feedback. Special thanks are also due to Marjorie McAneny, my editor at Jossey-Bass, who, in approaching this work with fresh eyes and expertise, contributed her own perspectives that led to further improvement.

And, finally, thanks to my wonderful, longtime friends: Abby, Alberto, Cheryl, Cindy, Gay, Jessica, Linda, and Lisa, who were always there when I needed a break from writing!
