Inspirational Quotes

Believe not in anything simply because you have heard it,Believe not in anything simply because it was spoken and rumoured by many,Believe not in anything simply because it was found written in your religious texts,Believe not in anything merely on the authority of teachers and elders,Believe not in traditions because they have been handed down for generations,But after observation and analysis, if anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, accept it and live up to it.

Gautama Buddha

Great Spirit, whose voice is on the wind, hear me.

Let me grow in strength and knowledge.

Make me ever behold the red and purple sunset.

May my hands respect the things you have given me.

Teach me the secrets hidden under every leaf and stone, as you have taught people for ages past.

Let me use my strength, not to be greater than my brother, but to fight my greatest enemy – myself.

Let me always come before you with clean hands and an open heart, that as my Earthly span fades like the sunset, my Spirit shall return to you without shame.

(Based on a traditional Sioux prayer)

“I do not seek to walk in the footsteps of the Wise People of old; I seek what they sought”.

Matsuo Basho

Six Interesting Facts about Rugby

1. Origin of the Name: The sport of rugby was named after the English public school, Rugby School, where it was first developed in the 19th century. Legend has it that the game originated when a student, William Webb Ellis, picked up the ball during a soccer game and ran with it.

1: Introduction to Rugby Union

Brief History of Rugby Union

Rugby union's origins trace back to the early 19th century at Rugby School in Warwickshire, England. Legend has it that in 1823, a student named William Webb Ellis defied the norms of the day by picking up the ball during a football match and running with it. While this story's accuracy is debated, it remains an iconic part of rugby folklore.

By the mid-19th century, rugby had spread to various schools and universities. In 1871, the Rugby Football Union (RFU) was established in England to standardise the rules. The sport continued to grow in popularity, leading to the formation of national teams and international matches. The first international game was played in 1871 between England and Scotland.

Rugby union split from rugby league in 1895, primarily over the issue of professionalism. While rugby league embraced professional play, rugby union remained strictly amateur until 1995, when the International Rugby Board (now World Rugby) declared the sport open to professionalism. This shift allowed players to be compensated for their skills and significantly contributed to the game's global growth and commercialisation.

Overview of the Game's Global Popularity

Rugby union is now a global sport with a passionate following. It is particularly popular in the British Isles, France, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the Pacific Islands. The Six Nations Championship and The Rugby Championship are annual tournaments featuring top national teams from Europe and the Southern Hemisphere, respectively, and they attract massive viewership.

The pinnacle of international rugby union is the Rugby World Cup, first held in 1987. This quadrennial tournament features teams from all over the world and has grown into one of the most-watched sporting events globally. Teams such as the New Zealand All Blacks, South Africa Springboks, England, and Australia have all lifted the Webb Ellis Cup, named after the sport's legendary figure.

Club rugby also enjoys significant popularity, with leagues like England's Premiership Rugby, France's Top 14, and the Southern Hemisphere's Super Rugby showcasing top-level talent. European competitions like the Heineken Champions Cup further elevate the game's profile by pitting the best clubs from different countries against each other.

Basic Rules and Objectives

Rugby union is a complex game played by two teams of 15 players each on a rectangular field. The objective is to score more points than the opposition within 80 minutes, divided into two 40-minute halves. Points can be scored in several ways:

1. Try (5 points): Achieved by grounding the ball in the opponent's in-goal area. This is the most valuable scoring method.

2. Conversion (2 points): After a try, the scoring team can attempt a kick at goal from a point directly in line with where the try was scored.

3. Penalty Kick (3 points): Awarded after certain infringements by the opposition. The team can opt to kick at goal.

4. Drop Goal (3 points): Scored by dropping the ball onto the ground and kicking it through the goalposts during open play.

The game starts with a kick-off and features continuous play with few stoppages. Key elements of play include:

- Scrum: A contest for the ball involving eight players from each team, binding together and pushing against the opposition.

- Line-out: A method of restarting play after the ball has gone out of bounds. Players line up and jump to catch the thrown ball.

- Ruck: Formed when the ball is on the ground and players from both teams close around it, competing for possession by pushing against each other.

- Maul: Occurs when the ball carrier is held by one or more opponents and one or more teammates bind onto the ball carrier.

Rugby union emphasises physicality, strategy, and teamwork. Each player has a specific rôle, categorised broadly into forwards and backs. Forwards are typically larger, stronger players who engage in physical contests like scrums and line-outs. Backs are generally faster and more agile, focusing on running, passing, and kicking.

Discipline and respect are core values in rugby union, with players expected to adhere to the laws and exhibit sportsmanship. The referee has the authority to enforce rules, and infringements can result in penalties or yellow/red cards, leading to temporary or permanent removal from the game.
