1. Origin of the Name: The sport of rugby was named after the English public school, Rugby School, where it was first developed in the 19th century. Legend has it that the game originated when a student, William Webb Ellis, picked up the ball during a soccer game and ran with it.

3. The Longest Match: The longest recorded rugby match lasted for 24 hours and 30 minutes. It took place in 2015 in the UK, raising funds for charity. The score at the end of the match was an astonishing 1,372-1,370!

Legend has it that in 1823, a student named William Webb Ellis defied the norms of the day by picking up the ball during a football match and running with it. While this story's accuracy is debated, it remains an iconic part of rugby folklore.
By the mid-19th century, rugby had spread to various schools and universities. In 1871, the Rugby Football Union (RFU) was established in England to standardise the rules. The sport continued to grow in popularity, leading to the formation of national teams and international matches. The first international game was played in 1871 between England and Scotland.
Rugby union split from rugby league in 1895, primarily over the issue of professionalism. While rugby league embraced professional play, rugby union remained strictly amateur until 1995, when the International Rugby Board (now World Rugby) declared the sport open to professionalism. This shift allowed players to be compensated for their skills and significantly contributed to the game's global growth and commercialisation.
