Introduction

“ C'est toi pour moi, moi pour toi dans la vie, Il me l'a dit, l'a juré pour la vie et dès que je t'aperçois Alors je sens dans moi mon cœur qui bat.”

Nothing like good old Edith Piaf to accompany you on the road! You might not understand a word of it, but the song hits you to the core. That’s the power of French for you! Just listening to Edith’s wonderful voice and the richness of the words melodically cooing from your car radio as you speed along at 60kph makes you almost want to learn French.

But, actually, you can! If you think you need to sit down at some quiet library desk or have a ton of books piled up on your table to learn proper French, you’re mistaken! To learn any language, especially French, all you need to do is to want to learn French. Some people find it easier to learn through a book, and that’s great. But language needs to be used and heard, not just read. It makes more sense for you to listen to French rather than see French words. And what better way to learn French while you are on the go? You might be too busy to enroll in a full-time French course in a center. And perhaps the only time you can be alone is during your morning and afternoon car ride to and from work. Or you could be on a long car journey with nothing but the endless road stretching in front of you. Your time in the car might be more usefully employed than being annoyed by traffic or staring into empty space. Why not learn French on the road? Listening to this guide can take you to France and back, all while journeying in the comfort of your car.

This audio guide is also a journey, one that will take you to an appreciation, and, hopefully, mastery of the French language. While you are navigating along the road, we will take you on an exciting trip to France and all things French. We are going to invite a bunch of friends over to your car and together, and we can help you learn French in a fun way. As you go through your usual work routine, each lesson will help you see your environment in a more French way. We will use things you see on the road, common everyday situations, and familiar conversations to help you learn the language. You can pause at any time to take in new concepts, rewind lessons you didn’t quite get, and simply enjoy listening to French as French people would say it. Learning this language has never been more accessible and fun than in your own car.

Before you begin this exciting journey, it is good to establish a key element in your language quest. Even before attempting to learn any vocabulary words, or the rules of conjugation, we find that it’s best to pause and answer this very simple question: Why are you learning French? Is it because:

- You are planning a trip to Paris with your family, and you want to have a grasp of the language to navigate through your itinerary?

- You are courting a mademoiselle, and you’d like to impress her with some lines from the most romantic language in the world?

- You are going to spend a semester in a Grandes écoles as a foreign exchange program. You don’t want to stand out as being fluent only in English.

- You are binging on Palme d’Or films like Entre les murs or La Vie d'Adèle, and you just want to drop the subtitles?

- You are in love with French supermodels like Amelie Honore and Sandrine Marlier, and you want to increase your chance of dating them by ordering in French?!

It may be a catchy French song, a scrumptious beef Bourgignon, or the French national soccer team that encouraged you to like French. Whatever it is, hold on to that initial hook. That first love with French is something you should treasure and remember again and again. Imagine that feeling of listening to La Vie En Rose when you were walking down your wedding aisle or that unmistakable first bite into a real French mille-feuille. Capture that priceless moment when you first fell in love with French. Now, you might think this exercise is silly, but we find this approach is very effective when you begin learning any language. Many language books simply dive into the rigors of grammar and vocabulary. But we find that many people lose interest in learning the language once they hit the conjugations. French is hard, no doubt. But when you revisit that French epiphany, the love at first sight moment over and over again, the learning becomes easier. Your memory retention is enhanced when you can dig deep and remind yourself why you started this journey. Learning a language should be fun, not a chore you need to plod through. And with us in the background, we will build more precious French memories together. So start the car and bon voyage!

Chapter One: Learning Strategies

Sandwich. Menu. Toilettes. Pardon. Interview. Ensemble. Tennis. You might think that these are just some random English words. But, actually, they are already French words you are familiar with. Even words like la comédie, le réfrigérateur, or l’architecte are all familiar, English-sounding French words. The previous chapter has shown us how connected English and French are, and this will make your learning a lot easier. You already know some French even before formally studying the language.

But to help you learn, we are offering you some learning strategies to maximize each lesson. We firmly believe that the only way you can learn French is to have a clear process. We are going to present each lesson in a particular format. Each lesson starts with a conversation, a vocabulary builder, the lesson proper, and ends with an exercise. It will help you understand the lesson faster if you anticipate and prepare for each of these segments in each lesson. Each segment is a learning strategy we use to help you get absorbed into French speech and language.

1. Listen to how French is spoken

Each segment starts with a short conversation introducing the lesson. Even before learning the language rules, you need to hear how French is uttered by French-speakers. Though some books will include the English approximation of French words, we find this method impractical. As we have learned, French is not a phonetic language in which each letter is pronounced equally. We have a lot of rules in French pronunciation. Rather than get caught up in these rules, we find it best that you simply listen to how French should be said.

Learning French should also be in context. Stories will help you understand the emotions behind the pronunciations, the lilts, the pacing of words, the accents, and all the communication cues inherent in French. For your convenience, we’ll slow down the pace of the conversations to allow you to absorb each word used. But once you get the hang of it, you should expose yourself to how fast French is usually employed.

2. Build your vocabulary

After each conversation, we will take some vocabulary words and explain their meaning. Of course, no one is expecting you to memorize all the words immediately. What is important is that you become familiar with the different words used. We will focus on words commonly expressed in everyday use for you to practice in your own time. Hopefully, through the lessons, your French vocabulary will expand. Whenever you meet a new French word, have the initiative to research that word on your own and use it immediately. When we don’t use words in our everyday life, they fade in our memory. So, for faster learning, play around with these vocabulary words constantly.

3. Connect your grammar

This is the trickiest part of the process. Romance languages are infamous for their rules of conjugation. I’m sure you had a difficult time learning English with all the grammar rules. French is the same. It has past, present, future tenses, the subjunctive mood, and all the subject-verb agreements. These language rules can be rather dizzying. Oftentimes, you will be thinking in English and trying to translate that into French. No worries! No one expects you to master your French grammar at the first try. We will not be teaching all the nitty-gritty grammatical rules all at once. But, by listening to the sentence structure, you will have a sense of what the speaker is talking about. Think of learning language as a game. It has its own rules for you to play with other people. Once you know the rules, the game becomes more exciting.

4. Test what you know

Now, the true test of learning is if you can apply what you learned by answering some questions. At this point, we advise you to park your car somewhere when you do these tests. These can take up quite a lot of your attention, so it’s best to place yourself in a safe environment. Don’t think of these tests as graded. There are no marks given in this audio course! We just want you to know how much of the lesson you have absorbed and which areas you still need to improve on. You can always go back to the lessons if anything is unfamiliar. But the tests are going to help you focus on areas for improvement.

The true test, of course, is to use the language in real-life conversations. It is quite hard to learn a language in an environment where everybody speaks English. So, try your best to interact with someone who is fluent in French for you to test your new-found language skills.

General Tips

We just described the flow of our lessons. But we still want you to maximize your learning, and that is why we will also give you some general tips you can take along the road. These tips will make it easier and ensure your journey is fun and enjoyable.

a. Say it out loud

Again, we have to emphasize that the only sure way that you can learn a language is to use it. And your car is the safest place you can say French words out loud to yourself without getting embarrassed. No one can learn French by just listening to it. Your throat and your mouth muscles will also need the French exercises to say those French words. You’ll find that you will employ a lot of your unused nasal muscles in the intonation of some words. You have to hear yourself say French and compare it to the audio recording. In fact, we have structured some of the lessons to allow you to repeat the words aloud before we proceed. In this way, we may have some sense of interaction.

b. Repeat, repeat, repeat

If you don’t feel too confident in a particular lesson, repeat it over and over until you get it. If you feel confident in another lesson, repeat it also over and over. French will grow into you when you repeat the lessons.

We strongly recommend that you make learning French a habit. Make this audio book a part of your morning routine or your evening drive. Language dies when you only use it when you feel like it. When you establish a certain routine of French lessons, your brain is going to anticipate learning and will absorb faster. You don’t need to devote a whole day to learning French. You can simply allot fifteen minutes every day. You can retain things better this way, instead of trying to absorb it at one go.

c. Use music, films, books, social media
