- Ricky Martin, “Un Dos Tres, Maria”
Those Latinos and Latinas sure know how to pump up the party! You may have grown up listening to Gloria Estefan or Julio Iglesias, and dancing the hits of Shakira or Luis Fonsi, and never understood a word of the lyrics. But just listening to Jennifer Lopez is enough to make most people want to learn Spanish!
But actually, you can. If you think that enrolling in a fancy language course in an upscale institution or studying tons of books in a quiet corner are the only ways you can learn Spanish, you are gravely mistaken. To learn any language, especially Spanish, all you need to do is want to learn it. We understand that some people cannot quite seem to learn using the traditional methods of reading from a book or conversing with a live tutor. It may even be too expensive to book a flight to Spain or Latin America. Others are just too busy to squeeze in any spare time for Spanish grammar exercises. They have that desire to learn, but it can quickly dissipate due to the taxing and time-consuming methods of traditional language learning.
Well, we understand that. We know how some language books can be so intimidating that the desire to learn Spanish can disappear pronto when you reach chapters like conjugation. We understand that initial spark of Spanish gusto, and we want to make learning easier for you. And so, we came up with this handy book designed specifically for English-speakers with little or no background in Spanish. We designed each chapter to be just a small but substantial bite of the Spanish language that you can easily absorb. You will be exposed to common expressions, colloquial phrases, and useful anecdotes that will cover the basics. What you learn from this book can be enough for you to get by on your trip to Barcelona or understand some of that fast-paced Valtònyc rap you’ve been memorizing. Our goal here is to appreciate the Spanish language. We want you to have a grasp of how sentences are constructed, how words are related, and how phrases are pronounced. Hopefully, by reading this book, you will be able to engage in simple Spanish conversations and appreciate the language all the more.
Before you begin this exciting journey, we want to emphasize a key element in learning any language. Before getting lost in all the rules of conjugations and declensions, it might be useful and interesting for you to consider a simple question: Why are you learning Spanish?
Is it because -
- You are planning a trip to Majorca or Cancun with your family, and you want to have a grasp of the language to navigate your itinerary?
- You are watching a film by Pedro Almodovar, a Spanish telenovela, or MoneyHeist, and you want to drop the subtitles?
- You have a lot of Latino friends who bring you enchiladas and tacos, and you’d just like to join in their lively conversation?
- You are spending a semester in Salamanca studying Spanish architecture, and you need a crash course in the language before you get called in class?
- You are courting a Spanish senorita, and you want to impress her with a few lines from Neruda that you actually understand?
- You just want to be fluent in a language spoken by over 483 million people, the second-most spoken native language in the world?!
It may be a “Last song syndrome” with “Despacito,” or a delectable and authentic Spanish paella, or an invigorating flamenco that got you interested in Spanish. Whatever it is, don’t lose that fire and passion. Remember that first bite of a jamon serrano or the unforgettable lines of Pablo Neruda or the first Spanish hit song you danced to. You know that saying, no one forgets their first love? Well, that first love with Spanish is going to take you through the difficult lessons. Yes, Spanish is really quite an easy language, but when you hit conjugations, it can sometimes be a little disheartening. You might find this exercise silly, but in our experience, reliving and visualizing that initial love for Spanish motivates people to continue learning. The soul of the Spanish language is in the emotions, so you need to have that emotional connection to guide you through the lessons. The Spanish words may sound new to you, but the feelings embedded in the way Spanish speakers utter words are universally felt. Learning a language should not be a chore you force yourself to plod through, but an enjoyable leisure you can relish! And with us helping you in the background, we will build more precious Spanish memories together.
Bienvenido!
