Stumbling in the dark

Samantha bumped her head on the wall behind her. Then again. Then again.

She was so cornered. Sweating and breathing hard, she was just sitting by a wall, her legs close to her body.

And yes, she was crying. Here she was, first mission and everything, the one chance to prove to the others that she could handle herself and she was just crying like a baby.

Nice going there, Sammy.

She sniffled one last time and pulled herself together. She stood up and concentrated on the lightbulbs around her. It was a maze, simply too much to bear. Lights on the ceiling, on every room, inside devices, fridges, computers, on the cars parked outside. She couldn’t do it, not in this state. She needed Hammond’s assuring voice. Yes, he’d know what to do. She had simply snuck inside an empty flat in this Lithuanian building. Which was extremely lucky, because the building was teeming with people. Families and childfolk sure, but they all carried at least one gun around and the boys were considered men at 12. Only good thing was, they were no friends of the corp. That much was certain. The agents wouldn’t find any cooperation around here for a few blocks at the very least.

She pressed her comm and spoke, “Hammond, please tell me what to do, I’m-”

“I SAID RADIO SILENCE WOMAN!” the man said and clicked off.

Her face puckered. Samantha forced back the tears but they broke through. She felt alone. No, abandoned. Yes, that was the word. They had simply abandoned her, all of them.
