Beschreibung

This booklet is dedicated above all to those who have only heard of LINUX and would like to "see how it runs", but also to those who do not mind "putting their hands" on a keyboard to write some commands manually from the terminal. We will cover all the steps I followed to switch in a simple and easy way from Windows to Linux, limiting myself to those systems that run only on USB sticks and/or on not recent computers.
This led me to examine the most common distributions trying to find out if there is a system that is easy to manage and quite complete in terms of the number of applications.
In this book we will see that there are simple distributions, perhaps too much, others more complete, but also less easy to manage, others definitely to be abandoned in view of the simplicity and completeness of the applications.

Conclusion

1 - Introduction

We all have heard of Linux and we have all wondered what is it and how is it used; of course I am not an exception to this rule and for this reason I tried to go a little deeper into the questions, doing research on the net, downloading some packages, checking how they run and what they offer. Let's say one fundamental thing right away: everything I've done supposes the installation of Linux on a USB stick, booting from it without interacting with the Windows system on the machine. A working type is called "Live" in jargon, so whoever wants to do further research, this is the key word. This mode is absolutely necessary as it is not possible to have a dual boot Windows / Linux on the same machine. Up to some years ago, I’m talking until about Windows XP, this was possible, although strongly discouraged, but since then this possibility has been removed, although there is always someone who suggests how to do that; do not trust too much. Indeed, we must be very careful about certain dangerous maneuvers: I will tell you about them in one of the following chapters. This book is dedicated to the medium-low level Windows user, that is, not to the programmer, who knows a thousand times more than what is written here, but not even to those who are almost afraid to put their hands on the keyboard. We will talk about programs for loading and editing files for which a minimum of manual skills are required, paying a lot of care, without overdoing and above all without losing data. It is therefore dedicated to those who want to leave the Windows world to look for some alternative route, even if just for curiosity, but above all to those who want to recover an old PC, where Windows no longer runs, thanks to the fact that Linux is a lot lighter and needs much less resources. I took advantage of it, because with my Windows 7-64 bit could no longer read the external USB DVD driver. With Linux I had no problems. Also for this book I follow the philosophy that guided me in all my previous books on different topics: I don't pretend to teach anyone anything; what is written in these pages is not the Bible, it is only the commented list of what I did, in order to keep the memory of the steps I followed and the choices I made, with the aim of having a manageable and usable product, leaving to the reader the choice of the system they like and the task of a deeper analysis of all the points I do not deal with here. The opinions you will read here are partly a consequence of my experience and partly derived by comments found on the net. This I the English translation of my book “Quale Live Linux?” put recently on the market. I thank everyone for reading these pages, hoping it will help and answer some questions, and if someone finds it boring or obvious, that means they know the subject better than me
