One of the three men who had insisted she have a drink with them was Melville Oates, the good-looking twenty-six-year-old son of the sheriff of Bigote County. A very eligible young man who was on the "most wanted list" of just about every girl in town. Not only because he was the chief law enforcement officer's son. But he himself had just recently entered the political scene, and with his father's all-powerful machine behind him, his future was practically assured.
