Richard Byrne presents a unique solution to the problem of drug addiction, and other social ills. Instead of adopting the usual method of dealing with such addictions by replacing one drug with another – Methadone, he has created a highly amusing, clever, and insightful play that uses the topics of sex and other comprehensive social issues such as politics, gender identity and ethnicity, to present religion in a new, more palatable way than conventional religion that usually simply goes over the heads of young people as boring. His characters: the Virgin Mary, Adam and Eve, the Angels Gabriel and Michael are presented in a fresh; almost tongue-in-cheek way that particularly appeals to the young. The result is a musical play that the youth of today can participate in directly and enjoy.

FORWARD
Being a Christian, to the author, means having a working faith that is beyond question. The author wrote two books ‘Dig the Dry Zone 1914’ and ‘Dig the Zone of Freedom 1916’ but both books had no social impact. Writing about musical hymns and being a good person is not all that isneeded to repair social ills. In the literary world of today it is not about writing a book with a brilliant story, or even getting it all over the internet that makes it successful.
The author’s working faith methodology has been changed to accomplish a feasible target. Readers require a link to themselves. So, to spice things up, by using sex as a comprehensive social issue, alongside politics, religion, education, gender and ethnicity, that involves everyone, the author has created a musical play. Using an educational story and making a musical template for teenagers amplifies mankind’s belief in life creating a musical dream of what religion is all about.
There is a large majority of working-class teenagers who are employed but are still livingin social deprivation. When teenagers see the church and the Bible, it goes over their heads, simply because it fails to give them any immediate social benefit. The Maya Accord has been put together in their language with current real-life material events that teenagerscan relate to. Thus, it gives them an immediate physical benefit that works. It has a positive effect on their understanding that they can make something satisfying in their lives come true giving them a more enjoyable future.
The true value of religion today is sometimes overlooked bydiffering interpretations of what is socially right in society. Angel Michael and Angel Gabriel were not born as angels, but rather grew into angels. Mary in her virginity became the Virgin Mary when she became pregnant. Even Jesus Christ’s first miracle, turned several barrels of water into wine at a wedding reception – a dream come true for many alcoholics! Saint Paul who wroteseveral letters in the New Testament, in his earlier yearsknown as Saul, captured and had many Christians put to death. Churches today profess that sex outside of marriage is a sin. Many members of the church profess not to be sinners. Today, couples of the same sex can legally be married in church. The author was at a Sundaymorning church service and talking to members of the congregation explained to them that Mary, as in the Bible, was not married to Joseph when she gave birth to Jesus Christ. They replied that I was mistaken. Joseph and Mary were husband and wife before she gave birth. The author replied – ‘are you trying to tell me that Mary was not a virgin?’
INTRODUCTION
The author would like to make clear from the outset that the objective of the Maya Accord is to help teenagers, who have a growing drug need that they don’t want to continue with, by providing them with an alternative to methadone.
The Maya Accord is not in itself replacing an addiction with another addiction but is more a case of replacing a bad taste with a feeling of euphoria or ‘buzz!’ A number ofuniversity students to get a buzz out of life, try drugs; these are mostly middle class teenagers who in time grow out of their wanting to walk on the wild side. It is the working class teenagers who are trying to get the best buzz they can out of life making cheap drug- related deaths rampant throughoutthe world.
For those teenagers who want to stop taking drugs the Maya Accord methodology helps to tackle their drug affliction before it becomes an addiction.
The Maya Accord story line is that the Virgin Mary, Adam and Eve, Angels Michael and Gabriel find themselves on an ark captained by Maya the Goddess of Recovery. Dropping from the sky as a rainbow, they return to planet Earth with the intentionof saving the world.
As a musical play, the Maya Accord has been performed by the Maya Ark Youth Accord drama group in a recording studio in Brighton.
