Beschreibung

Occupational therapy, or OT, is a profession that promotes health and well-being through occupation. According to Anne G. Fisher, occupation is: • The act of mastering or taking possession of something, of occupying time, spaces and roles • An action or a series of actions in which the subject engages • A targeted and meaningful action. Occupational therapy around the world The primary goal of OT is to enable people to participate in everyday activities. In order to reach this goal, occupational therapists help disabled patients learn how to do activities that enhance their engagement and participation abilities by modifying the environment (see WFOT definition). The term ‘occupational’ refers not only to the use of activities and occupations, but also to the idea that disabled people must become the real ‘protagonists’ of the therapy. Preface

When reading the international literature on occupational therapy (OT) it is immediately plain that this new-born discipline is organized according to diverse approaches. From the first pioneering work on OT of Stow in 1946, the theoretical and practical principles of OT have continued to develop. The scientific basics were organized into a theoretical frame; it was translated into practices through a functional perspective, according to the groups, different but homogeneous within themselves, e.g. cognitive disabilities, motor impairment, etc. The application model included specific assessment and therapeutic techniques. During these last years a new facet has become important. It can be defined as “model of global approach”. It is especially useful during years of growth. The assessment focuses on how the child manages his or her specific tasks, on the different aspects of the child’s life and on how the environment supports him or her. In this model the first aim is to identify areas of occupational strengths and needs in accordance with the child’s profile, his or her parents awareness and the therapist’s suggestions. The child’s development is analyzed according to two domains:
