Lisa Gardner remarked in an Amazon Music podcast interview that she doesn’t see herself as a ‘series author’ and feels like her approach to writing the new novel was ‘haphazard’. She states that she doesn’t plan the stories in advance and is never even sure what the next book will be.

One Step Too far presents a story about reclamation and survival in the face of extreme peril. The story follows Frankie Elkin, a missing persons investigator who appears to perpetually exist on the razor’s edge of sanity as she perseveres through the equally harrowing ordeals of alcohol addiction recovery.
We were introduced to the intriguing Frankie Elkin in the 2021 novel, Before She Disappeared. Frankie was on a path of self-redemption, taking on the cases that almost everyone else had given up on, no matter how seemingly hopeless they were. Her quest to find a missing Haitian girl sees her conquering her own demons while gaining the begrudging respect of those around her.
The Author, Lisa Gardner, has spoken about her spontaneous writing style and that even pivotal characters like Frankie do not have their destinies planned out from the start, this somewhat chaotic energy translates well into the narrative of a severely broken woman trying to fix a broken world in the hopes that she can somehow find healing in the process.
