Executive Summary of The Last Thing He Told Me

Did You Know?

Laura Dave used the Enron Scandal as the primary inspiration for The Last Thing He Told Me. She saw an interview with Enron CEO Kenneth Lay’s wife, Linda Lay, wherein she defended her husband’s innocence. It intrigued her how devoted she was to him in spite of the evidence proving his guilt.

The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave is told from the perspective of Hannah Hall, a successful woodturner in her forties that caters to upscale clients. She has been married to Owen Michaels for one year when the novel starts, and together they raise Owen’s sixteen-year-old daughter named Bailey. The events of the story span a little over four days, although the timeline goes back and forth between the past and the present to explore the family’s relationship. Dave also uses this as a tool for the readers to get to know Owen, whose physical presence in the main timeline is limited.

The novel opens in Sausalito, California, which is a small town where nobody is a stranger to anyone. Hannah’s small family lives a quiet life in a houseboat in the San Francisco Bay until she receives a mysterious note from Owen. It reads “Protect her,” which is so ambiguous and strange that she thinks Owen is just pranking her. She tries to get to the bottom of this by calling him, but when he doesn’t respond, she begins to think something seriously wrong has happened.
