Best known for his masterful storytelling about various complicated subjects, Michael Lewis writes about the initial response of the United States when the novel coronavirus made its way from China to America. In The Premonition: A Pandemic Story, he draws from the experiences and insights of a group of scientists and medical professionals and tells a “superhero story where the superheroes seem to lose the war.” In his depiction of this grim reality, Lewis wants readers to know what had transpired behind the scenes of crisis response while giving them the benefit of formulating their own “what-ifs” if only the valiant cries of these superheroes were heard.

Executive Summary of The Premonition

Did You Know?

Michael Lewis, the author, reveals that the title for The Premonition: A Pandemic Story was originally "The Ones Who Knew." However, he changed it out of consideration for the individuals who shared their stories through his book, thinking that such a title might paint them in a bad light.

†††

Michael Lewis taps on the background of various individuals and connects them together to tell the story of how the United States responded to and coped with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Engineer Bob Glass and his daughter Laura worked together on the latter's science fair project. Their model, which took into account people's "social networks and their movements" and the proximity wherein infection transmission of an airborne pathogen is highly probable, didn't win the final science competition, but it would become the model for pandemic social distancing protocols. Among their conclusions was the closing down of schools to keep children in isolation and prevent the spread of flu-like diseases.
