Somepeopleseemto have it all. They have great jobs, flawless bodies, and beautiful marriages. They even have the energy to go to the gym in the morning! Their self-belief is unshakable. When they want to accomplish something, they just do it. They seem to most of us to be godlike.
Okay, so I exaggerated a little. Nobody has a perfect life.
Some of us get quite close. What separates these fortunate individuals from the majority? What about them attracts success after success and opportunity after opportunity? You've probably observed that these outstanding individuals have a remarkable capacity to stay optimistic and stoic, even when everything around them falls apart.
Further, have you ever wondered how people who work and live in harsh environments keep going without giving up?
Some of them seem to enjoy the task! You've surely heard of Special Ops teams that spend weeks on near-impossible missions or adventurers who spend months trekking through freezing climes.
Other extraordinary people have lifestyles that need a different kind of extreme focus and concentration. A typical day in the life of a Zen Buddhist monk, for example, consists entirely of prayer and meditation. They reject the temptations of the earthly world and devote themselves entirely to spiritual growth. They are the religious counterparts of Olympic gymnasts and Fortune 500 CEOs. How can they maintain such a high level of motivation? What motivates them?
We may answer these issues with a single word: self-discipline.
