One: Playing with the Boys

Agile and fast, an avid and accomplished rugby player since his school days, my husband, Adam plays right wing for our local team; I usually watch from the side-lines when the boys have a home fixture. However, that Saturday we agreed that I would go shopping with my friends, and drive over to collect him after the match.

As it turned out, perhaps I got just a little more than I bargained for...

When I arrived, there were only a few cars in the car park, not necessarily unusual because players often made arrangements so they could have a drink after the match. The away team invariably travelled by coach, but there was no sign of that either, which did seem strange, in fact, everything felt odd. I parked anyway and headed for the entrance.

Walking inside, I found the club deserted too.

“Halloo! Halloo!” I called, my voice echoing around the empty room, the bar shutters were down, and nobody was around.

“Hello,” I called again. “Is anybody there?” heart hammering beneath my ribcage, pumping adrenaline through my veins. Instinct told me something weird was going on.

Must’ve got the time muddled, I whispered to myself for comfort, rattling the car keys in my hand, making a reassuringly normal noise.
