Chapter 1

Zack was in his room, door slightly ajar as he played at hacking the school network. He didn't know exactly why he was doing this; it just gave enough of a rush to be fun. No one ever knew it was him. The home network took care of that. It made him a shadow on the net.

Zack looked up when he heard the miscreants as they busted into the house, making their way to his dad's office. He knew what he was told to do, but wanted to make sure the danger was real. He quietly snuck to the very top of the stairs. This was an old and grand house during the American Eastlake period when it was built. His father, Dr. Mason Shadow Hawk had refurbished as much as he could. From the loft at the top of the stairs he could see some of his father’s study. What he saw made his heart race like a dog on a track. It was almost enough to make his body quake a little.

"We want the file and the boy, Wolf," a sexy, sultry female voice said forcefully.

"Never," his father told them.

"Oh, you will give it to me or I will kill your wife," she returned.

A few seconds later, another agent came in his arm firmly around his mother, Leigh’s, neck. They both knew who these people were. They belonged to the Agents of Wickedly Evil Stuff. They had infiltrated the CIA. Mason knew about their presence in the company long ago. He could under no circumstances allow these people to have little Zackary. Leigh nodded to her husband of eight years. The sacrifice had to be made if Zackary’s secret was to remain safe. No one must know of him or what he could do. Mason nodded in understanding then looked to where she thought her son might be. The message in her eyes was clear, get out now, before they find you!

“Go ahead and kill us,” Leigh called out. “You’ll never have the diamond, and we’ll make sure you never get it.”

The words rang out in his head. She had taught them to him when he was three. The memory flashed back into his mind with amazing clarity. It was the day after he'd turned three. She came into his room as he played with a favorite toy gun. Gently, she removed it from his hands and took him to the bed, asking him to sit down. He could feel the seriousness of her tone as he sat down beside him.

“Do you remember the code I taught you for when things get dangerous?”

“Yes,” Zack remembered answering.

“I want you to repeat it with me right now.”

“You will never have the diamond and we’ll make sure you never get it.”

They repeated together over and over because he hadn’t mastered his photographic memory yet. It was still developing so they had to repeat everything at least five times every day. Now Zack knew why she had done this. It was time to brave and to make sure he wouldn’t be found. The rest of the conversation returned to him too.

“Why?”

“Let’s just say that you are such a special boy that a whole lot of bad people want you so they can make more of you.”

“How special, Mommy?”

Leigh took a breath and began, “Remember last year when you head hurt really bad?”

“Yeah, I guess.”

“That was because your eye and ears were changing.”

“How?”

“I can’t tell you, there might be someone listening.”

Zack remembered Leigh taking him to his closet and showing him the little door in the back of it. There was a slide in it that led to the basement. A red light flashed on the side of it as it opened.

“If you hear me say those words, you get in here and you get away. Do you understand, dear?” she asked.

He remembered nodding a tentative yes. It was a sensible question, one he had come to expect. The reminder was gentle and pointed. If ever the family was in trouble and people wanted to take him she would say, 'You can't have the diamond and we'll make sure you never do.' She made sure her little chief understood as she held him close. Zack's mind snapped back into reality as the the code reached his ear a second time.

"You can't have the diamond; we'll make sure you never get it!" Leigh exclaimed.

He found the entrance to his secret chamber. The only things inside were two gifts he'd chosen not to unwrap yet. He knew what they were anyway. There wasn't a secret his parents could keep from him for very long. Zack noticed that he was moving faster than usual everything was a blur as he grabbed the two presents and scrambled into the shoot. They wouldn't find him. His parents' refusal to hand him over was the reason he'd lost them. He heard the gun shots sound off as he jumped in. All the way down he cried for them. What was he going to do now? There was no one to take care of him. Zack hit the bottom of the shoot hard. The door to the shoot must have closed because it was pitch dark in the room or wherever he had landed.
