Meggie McQueen was thirteen years old and terribly bored. She was in english class. She fiddled and doodled and squirmed, but her boredom never got away. She didn't want to be at school. She drew herself playing with a dog.
Then, with a start, she realized she didn't exactly have to be at school. No one would know if she was gone for a few minutes. Besides, if she was gone for the rest of the day, she concluded that her parents would be too worried to scold her. So while the teacher turned around to face the board, she opened the window and heaved herself out.
Thump! She landed on the brown, grassy ground. She stood up, dusted herself, and waved goodbye to the dreadful, green-roofed building that was her school. Then she ran with all her might, jumping over rocks and clumps of grass. She heard Mrs Cubey yelling after her, calling her for her to come back. She ignored her. She was free! Then she tripped. It felt like slow motion as she fell, her head plummeting towards the dusty ground. Her head crashed. Then it bounced back up.
"Meggie, are you paying attention?" Mrs Cubey said with a concerned expression."Are you okay?" Meggie felt throbbing pain on her forehead.
"Meggie," her friend, Ruth whispered. "Are you okay? You banged your head on your desk. You were asleep." Meggie straightened in her seat, red from the roots of her hair to the tips of her toes.
"I'm fine," she said. "I'm fine." Then she decided not to fall asleep again. She stared out the window, thinking about how she didn't want to be in school. Then her body started moving towards the window, opened it, and thump! She landed on the grassy floor. Then she started running all over again, over the rocks and entangled grass. Then she tripped. Crash! Her eyes snapped open.
"That's the second time," Mrs Cubey said. "Please try to keep awake." Several people giggled. Meggie turned red again.
"I'm sorry, Mrs Cubey," she said, ignoring Ruth's incredulous look. "I promise not to do that again." Mrs Cubey nodded and started talking again. Droning on... and on... and on... Meggie stood up and headed towards the window. Opened it. Thump! She ran. Trip... Bang!
"Detention, Meggie," Mrs Cubey said. "That was the third time."
