Red Alert
Rain lashed against the windshield of the black operations vehicle. Blue lights reflected in the puddles on the asphalt as the engine hummed softly. Sergeant Lukas Brandt stared silently through the fogged-up window. A crackle came through the radio in his ear.
“Command to unit Echo-Two. Confirm readiness. Target location in two minutes.”
“This is Echo-Two. Readiness confirmed,” Lukas replied curtly. His voice was calm, almost mechanical – the result of years of missions, discipline, and determination. Officer Jana Kreuzer sat beside him, her eyes gleaming with focus in the dim light. In the back seat, teammates Paul and Tarek checked their gear one last time. Every movement was precise. Every step rehearsed.
The target: an abandoned office complex on the outskirts of the city, currently occupied by armed criminals. It wasn’t just about drugs – according to undercover intel, weapons from Eastern Europe were also being trafficked there. The situation was unclear but highly dangerous.
The vehicle came to an abrupt stop. The second unit pulled in behind them. Lukas opened the door and immediately felt the cold rain on his skin. With a hand signal, he formed up the team. No words – just clear movements. Seconds later, everyone was in position.
“Drone One is now live,” came the voice from the command vehicle. A live feed from the recon drone appeared on the small screen attached to Lukas’s arm. Three figures patrolled the main entrance, two more stood at a second-floor window.
“Three entrances,” Jana whispered. “Two are guarded. Rear entrance looks clear, but it could be a trap.”
Lukas nodded. “We’ll split up. Alpha team takes the front. Beta goes around the back. No shots unless fired upon.”
The breach began. Silently, the officers moved through the darkness, the sound of rain their only cover. At the rear door, Jana gently pushed against the rusted metal. It gave way. No trap. Not yet.
Inside, it was pitch black. Only the faint green glow of their night-vision goggles revealed crumbling wallpaper, shattered glass doors, the smell of mildew and cold smoke.
Suddenly – voices. On the first floor. Lukas raised his hand. Everyone froze. Then, a crash. A door slammed open.
“Move!” Lukas commanded. Seconds later, they stormed the stairwell in perfect formation.
At the top, they encountered the first enemy. Armed, surprised, but fast enough to draw a pistol. A quick strike from Tarek brought him down. No gunfire. The element of surprise was still on their side.
Then it happened: A shot – loud, metallic, from the third room on the left. A member of Alpha team called out urgently over the radio.
“Resistance in the conference room! Two injured! We need backup!”
Lukas’s heart beat faster, but his mind stayed sharp. “Echo-Two to Command. We have a firefight. Situation escalating. Red Alert. Repeat: Red Alert!”
That was the moment everything changed. No amount of training could prepare them for what would happen in the next few minutes.
The night was no longer just wet and dark.
It had become deadly.
The First Strike
The screech of the radio cut through the night. Sirens approached in the distance as the two SWAT teams became fully engaged in the operation. Lukas Brandt pressed himself against the wall next to the conference room. Inside, gunfire raged. Shards of wood splintered from the doorframe as a bullet zipped past his helmet.
“Take cover!” he shouted, pulling a smoke grenade from his vest and hurling it through the door gap with a precise flick. A dull thud followed, and dense smoke spread through the room.
“Now!” he yelled.
Jana moved first. With weapon raised, she stormed into the room, closely followed by Lukas and Paul. The figures inside appeared ghostlike in the haze, but their training paid off: three suspects were brought down within seconds. One was injured, the other two dropped their weapons as soon as they saw rifle barrels pointing at them through the fog.
“Room secured!” reported Jana.
But the victory was short-lived. Upstairs, something moved. Footsteps—fast, heavy. Lukas raised his hand, signaling the others to stay still. Then came the metallic sound of a machine gun being cocked.
“Sniper Bravo to Echo-Two: Enemy at rooftop level. No visual—target is moving quickly.”
