Chapter 1
On the Plane to Pompeii
James was in a dark, enclosed room. The bricks were grey with drawings on them, etched into the walls with a rock. There were pictures of a sword, an enormous beast, and the Earth. A dim flickering light hung above, and a barred metal door was the entrance.
Chained to the ground was a man, worn out and fatigued. His croaky voice called out to James.
‘Leave, leave this place before he finds you. You must stop what’s coming.’
Suddenly the bars retracted and a hand reached out to James …
He woke up sweating and breathing heavily, now back in reality, on a plane to Pompeii.
‘Are you all right?’ his friend, Raj, asked him.
‘I’m … fine,’ he replied.
His blue eyes glistened in the sun, and his friends beside him, Jack and Raj, gazed out of the window.
Raj was an ingenious inventor and loved creating things which helped the team against dangers, and Jack had lived with James ever since his parents had passed away and joined the team ever since. They had gone on many missions together, to the hottest deserts and coldest seas, all set up by James’ father. Although they weren’t an enormous organisation such as MI6, they had saved the world from many dangerous threats. However, James’ father had gone alone on a mission to investigate a power which could defeat anything and had vanished, never to be seen again …
They had all heard on the news that a strange groaning sound was coming out of the volcano, as if ‘someone were inside it’, and that Mount Vesuvius was getting out of control. So, they decided to investigate.
The sky was orange and the sun was deep red. James thought about his dream. Was it a message or just something from his imagination? Then he felt the sun’s rays shine down on him. They burned, badly. Something was coming.
Without warning, a group of ferociously hot fireballs came bolting towards the plane, leaning and moving in different directions, as if something were controlling them, knocking out the engines. They slammed into the windows, breaking the glass; they flew above the passengers’ heads and went out again through another window. As the plane descended at a rapid pace, more of the fireballs hurtled towards it, burning the metal, causing holes to appear. Just as the passengers thought the fireballs had stopped, they realised that they were heading straight for a river of smoking lava! Pondering what to do, James finally thought of a plan. The plane was still going down, and then it hit the river. The river’s sleek, sinuous body was melting the plane fast, and the passengers were consumed by fear. They didn’t have much time.
Chapter 2
Playing with Fire
What James noticed was that in the river of lava, every metre or so was a flat black piece of the ground which had eroded away. The passengers could get across the river by jumping to each stone. So, James, Jack, and Raj kindly helped the petrified passengers off the plane and told them what to do. One by one they got off, until it was only the three friends left. They quickly jumped off just before the plane plunged into the lava and watched it be no more.
