Chapter 1
Giorgia was exhausted. That Christmas Eve had been the longest she could remember. At last, she was in her cozy and warm bed. However, there was a little nuisance that kept her from sleeping: Giulia. No one knew where she managed to get all that energy, but she had it. She talked loudly as she jumped on her bed.
Giorgia tried to hide under the covers in a vain attempt not to hear her. Her sister was too noisy. Giulia's voice was all around the room; it slipped into the small glimmer of the blankets, passed under the pillow that Giorgia had put on her head, and found her ears, strong and determined as if it had no obstacles.
"What's up?" Giorgia asked, taking off the blankets and pillow, now facing her sister.
"Nothing. It's just weird. You got one gift more than me. Who brought it? What do you think? Do you know who did it?" Giulia was unstoppable. The questions were many, one after the other, and they were so fast that Giorgia didn't have time to answer them. Though she had no answer to give.
To tell the truth, that extra gift under the tree was quite a mystery and had left everyone a little shocked.
The greeting card said: "This is for Giorgia. Merry Christmas. Santa Claus."
It was not from her parents, grandparents, uncles, or aunts. Giulia started screaming as she ran around the room, asking everyone whose gift it was since it disturbed the mathematical harmony of Christmas gifts in her sister's favor. She wanted to know who did it to make it clear that there must be another present for her too.
In the end, she was angry with Santa Claus and decided to smash his face as soon as she had the opportunity. She gave him just one more chance: if she had not found another gift under the tree the next day, Santa would have been in trouble.
The gift was a pen along with an elegant notebook, beautifully bound in soft leather.
No one knew who had made that gift, yet all knew it was the perfect gift for Giorgia.
"I don't know why Santa Claus brought an extra gift for me," Giorgia said calmly as ever. "Maybe it's just a mistake. Maybe he's not good at math, like me."
"I don't believe you don't know. You don't want to tell me on purpose," Giulia retorted, offended.
Now Giulia was in her worst phase, when she began to be offended. She was there, with her arms folded, sitting on her bed. She looked at Giorgia with a pout as big as Giorgia's desire to go to sleep.
"I won't talk to you anymore!" she added.
"Giulia, I promise you that as soon as we know who made this gift, I'll tell them they must give you a gift as beautiful as this one! I promise. But now, I beg you, let me sleep!" Giorgia pleaded.
Giulia jumped on Giorgia's bed, smiling. She kissed her sister.
"Okay. Thank you, my little sister. I love you."
Giorgia tucked up her blankets after her sister's destructive passage and tried to sleep again. Before falling asleep, she heard her sister's voice again.
"What if they don't have an extra gift for me?"
Chapter 2
Giorgia opened her eyes and realized that it was still night, yet a pink light illuminated the room. She rubbed her eyes and leaned forward a bit to see the time. The alarm read three o'clock.
She got up, looked around, and saw that the light was coming from the pen that was on the desk. Her wonder was surpassed only by her curiosity. She saw her sister, Giulia, sleeping soundly and smiled at her serene face, thinking, "when she sleeps, it is the only time when I can see her calm and silent."
Giorgia stood up, walking cautiously and slowly towards the desk and the source of that light. The pen shone with a soft, pleasant pink light. She was afraid to touch it and stood looking at it while sitting down on the desk chair.
Suddenly, glitter came out of the pen, forming a circle in the center of the room, in mid-air, and while spinning, they kept shining. Giorgia was paralyzed by surprise and looked at the scene motionless for a few minutes. Then her attention went to the pen again, which now stood straight with its tip at the top left of a blank sheet of the notebook, now open on the first page. It was a clear invitation to write something.
The girl was possessed by an inexplicable euphoria as she took the pen and began to write the first thing that crossed her mind. "The blue sky in June was lit up by the sun..."
The glitter in mid-air began to swirl until it became invisible. Many shiny rays spread like a rain of lights, changing the atmosphere around Giorgia and her sister. Instead of the walls and ceiling of their bedroom, now there was a blue sky, brightened by a warm and pleasant sun, just like Giorgia had written.
Giorgia's surprise turned into other words, which she hurried to write on the sheet. "The sea was calm, and the waves made a sweet sound as they landed slowly on the shore of the beach..." The sea appeared in front of her.
The desk, the beds, the bookcases of the room, everything, was now on a beach, but luckily the waves could not reach them. Giorgia realized she had sand under her feet and felt the warmth of the sun. She took off her shoes and socks; it was sand, very beautiful, like gold dust, pleasantly warm.
Chapter 3
Giulia woke up and began to scream in fear: "Giorgia! Giorgia!" Giorgia ran on the sand towards her sister, carrying the notebook and pen with her. She immediately explained what had happened. Giulia's fear turned into unexplainable euphoria. She quickly got out of bed and began to jump on the sand and run into the sea, splashing water everywhere with her feet.
"Be careful, Giulia, we do not know what is going on here!" As was often the case, Giulia paid no heed to her sister’s words and kept on running and laughing, pounding and kicking the waves crashing on the shore. Giorgia stopped to think about the situation. She concluded, "I am sleeping. I’m just having a beautiful dream."
"Giulia!" she screamed with a loud voice. But her sister wouldn't stop playing. She had to call her several times. Out of breath at last, due perhaps more to tiredness than anything else, she got closer to Giulia, who asked her with her usual absence of grace: "What do you want?"
"I think I am dreaming, Giulia."
"Oh yes? And me? Are we having the same dream? I am not a dream. Maybe you are a dream of mine."
"Give me a pinch. They say that if you are dreaming, you wake up if someone pinches you."
Giulia was enthusiastic about her sister's invitation. She put in the effort and pinched Giorgia so hard that her cheek suddenly turned red.
"Ouchhhh."
"You told me to do it!!!"
"Yes, but you did it so hard on purpose!"
Giulia laughed. "Anyway, I didn't wake up. So, I’m not sleeping," Giorgia concluded.
Then another crazy thought came across her mind - or maybe it was only the desire to take a little revenge. "What if it is you dreaming, Giulia?"
"Ah, no problems at all. I like this dream, and I don’t want to wake up."
"Come here, let me try to pinch you and see if you wake up."
"No!" Giulia said firmly and began to run away from Giorgia. Giorgia started running after her all over the beach. She could not catch her, though. Giulia laughed loudly amused until she stumbled, and Giorgia managed to jump on her and give her that blessed pinch; it was not as decisive as Giulia's pinch, but it was felt.
Again, nothing happened. "Do you realize, Giulia? We are not dreaming."
"Does that mean someone else is dreaming?"
