The Crystal Lake

“Where are you going?” Bakbak asked her daughter.

On her way out of the nest, Tat answered: “To the lake for the early morning dip.”

Bakbak warned her: “Do not spend all your time in the lake. Do not forget, you must practise flying.” Seeing Tat grumbling, Bakbak said: “I know your wing hurts, but you must overcome that. Ducks cannot depend on swimming alone; they need to fly and soar as well.”

Tat only left the lake reluctantly and for short periods of time, in spite of Bakbak’s constant attempts to motivate her to practise flying. She told her: “Your failure to master flying will cause you and all of us trouble.” Tat never understood the reason for her mother’s alarm. Two whole months passed, and her inability to master flying hasn’t caused any problems!

That day, Tat returned to the nest uncharacteristically early. As soon as she saw her father Tabtab, she asked him, frowning: “Who put that glass on top of the lake? I will petition them with the flock leader. They deprived me of the pleasure of swimming in the water.”

The father looked at the mother and said in a concerned voice: “It came early this year!”

Tat had not yet lived through winter and had not seen the ice covering the lake surface before. She paid no attention to what Tabtab said and continued: “I will go to play with the butterflies in the woods.”

Bakbak interrupted her firmly: “Enough play; you must practise flying. It’s time!”

It’s Time

“It’s time,” was the same sentence the flock leader called from his nest when he heard the sound of ice breaking when Tat’s body hit the lake surface when she jumped. A short while later, he came out of his nest and called on all the ducks to gather.

They all came out from their nests and lined up neatly around him. He told them: “Flock members, it’s time. To go. To migrate. From the lands of piercing cold to the lands of the warm sun.” He ended his speech by saying: “Get ready! The journey starts at dawn.”

The Ducks raised their wings and whooped in support of the wise decision of their leader. They retired to their nests one after the other to prepare for the journey.
