Notes

OralPleasures

Oh, tell me: whoever invented the kiss?

His lips were aglow with rapture like this!

He kissed and never once troubled his head.

The beauty of May was burning red [...]!

Heinrich Heine[1]

3. Frans Masereel, circa 1930

What moves two civilized human beings to press the upper ends of their digestive tracts together like flatfish, making a smacking sound of the lips, in order to avow afterwards how heartfelt and romantic this damp contact was? The phenomenon of kissing is so widespread in our culture that it is regarded as quite natural and not worthy of any more detailed consideration. The kiss is something fleeting, lightweight – and yet at the same time something profoundly irrational.
