Sleepy Hollow

In the east of the Hudson River lies a small town called Greensburgh, but also known by the name of Tarrytown. Near this town, about two miles away, there is a little valley between the hills1 called Sleepy Hollow. It is one of the quietest places in the world. It has received this name from the stillness of the place and the peculiar character of its inhabitants2, who are descendants from the original Dutch families. Some people say that the place was bewitched3 many years ago. Others say that an old wizard4 of a native tribe held his meetings there before the country was discovered by Henry Hudson.

The place continues under the influence of a strange magic that bewitches people’s minds. This magic gives them all kinds of beliefs, visions and chances to see strange things and hear voices in the air. The neighborhood has a lot of local tales, and haunted histories.

However, the most terrifying spirit that haunts this enchanted region is the figure of a horseman5 without a head. There are people that say that he was a soldier who lost his head in the war. Now, he rides at night looking for it. Some say he was buried near the church, so his ghost must return there before sunrise.

This legendary superstition has inspired a wild story in the region, and the spectre is known by the name of the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow.
