CONSCIOUSNESS OR SUPERCONSCIOUSNESS THIS IS THE DILEMMA The present society continues to run like a mad elephant, toward global catastrophe. Why do we continue on this road that leads us to a dead end, with end view our own self-destruction? The answer to this question lies in human consciousness itself, the cause of every problem, while Superconsciousness is the solution to every difficulty. What is the difference between consciousness and Superconsciousness? Superconsciousness consciously connects us with everything that exists, and to understand it better we can make the analogy of a network: everything in existence is like a node that can have the illusion of being separate from the rest of the network. Most people are like that, they feel like a node separated from the rest, like a single individual separated from the rest of Humanity. This feeling of separation is the mode in which consciousness operates.
CONSCIOUSNESS OR SUPERCOSCIENCE THAT IS THE DILEMMA The present society continues to run like a mad elephant, toward global catastrophe. Most people are like this, feeling like a knot separated from the rest, like a single individual separated from the rest of Humanity. This feeling of separation is the mode in which consciousness operates. So it is ”normal” for a world dominated by consciousness to be in perpetual conflict, consciousness can only do so much by being a principle of division and separation. And as long as it is the same that decides both our personal and Humanity's fate, we will always be at risk of self-destruction. We can even say, ”The very nature of consciousness, directed toward separation and competition, can only inevitably lead us into conflict with others.” It is the very nature of ordinary consciousness that leads us to violence and war! Superconsciousness knows that it is both the node and the global network itself at the same time, so it knows that it is deeply connected and interconnected to the Whole, while consciousness thinks it is a node unto itself, separate from the rest of the network. Superconsciousness thus opens us to a wider reality than that of ordinary consciousness, and we get a taste of it in moments of deep Inner Peace, when the silent mind allows us to enjoy to the fullest the spectacle of the present moment. Why is consciousness on the world's bridge of command and Superconsciousness all but ignored? Superconsciousness is something unpredictable and original capable of subverting the established order. The emergence on this planet, of a minimum sufficient number of awakening Superconsciousnesses, is the greatest nightmare for the system and for the Anti-Awakening Dark Powers that rule the world. This is the problem, the ruling elites do not want Superconsciousness awakening because it would put an end to their millennial earthly Power. Only by electing Superconsciousness, as the Supreme Commander of human life, will it be possible to change human destiny and put the extraordinary scientific progress implemented by consciousness no longer at the service of consciousness itself in command, which we might rather describe as ”unconsciousness ruling the world,” but to put technological progress at the service of Superconsciousness, the only one capable of fostering development that is healthy, sensible, and truly aimed at the welfare of Humanity. INITIAL NOTE.
In this book I discuss consciousness, ego, ego-consciousness, Superconsciousness, and Awakening Consciousness. To make the exposition of the contained concepts clear, I give an overview of these terms to make the reading more understandable.
If we consult a dictionary we find the following definition of consciousness:
"Awareness the subject has of himself and the external world with which he is in relationship, of his own identity and the complex of his inner activities."
Or: "Ability to assess one's gifts and aptitudes."
In a more general sense, consciousness is associated with knowledge:
"the knowledge of one's acts through reflection and analysis." "The exact realization of a given thing, the ability to evaluate one's gifts and aptitudes.
As far as the Ego is concerned, we find:
The term Ego is mainly used in Italian to refer to an individual's inner self, or alternately as a derogatory term to refer to a person with excessive determination and arrogance.
Then we have the definition of consciousness-ego:
Consciousness-ego is a mechanism of the mind by which we identify with it. It is individualized consciousness that makes us believe we are something separate from everything else.
While under Superconsciousness we find:
The definition of Superconsciousness given by Swami Kriyananda, a disciple of the great Indian master Paramhansa Yogananda, is as follows:"Superconsciousness is the higher dimension of our consciousness, which enables us to tap into unlimited resources and potential. This is the hidden, magical mechanism of our mind that operates behind intuition, physical and spiritual healing, problem solving and deep inner joy.
I will make allusions throughout the text to that phenomenon called Awakening Consciousness:
Here I would like to specify that in this book I am referring to consciousness as being associated with knowledge, thus our ability to realize ourselves and the world in which we live, to reflect on and analyze things, all of which come within the sphere of the thinking activity of the human being.
In certain circles, such as the philosophical and spiritual, we refer to consciousness as a kind of higher quality, which elevates human beings above other living species.
In my opinion, as much as consciousness plays an important role in our daily lives, in that it is unlikely that we can live without ever thinking, reflecting, making decisions, and analyzing issues, it is not, however, something that makes us "superior" to the animal or plant kingdom. Here I quote an excerpt from my first book entitled: "The Gospel of Peace, You Will Save the World" in which I state:
"Nature is much more interconnected than we may think. Take for example some experiments conducted on plants, which show how they consciously respond to our behaviors. One of the experiments was conducted using GSR (galvanic skin response) sensors that can detect the presence of stress. Surprisingly, by subjecting plants to situations of profound stress, such as burning their leaves, the GSR detectors showed that the plants had a clearly measurable response similar to that of humans. This undoubtedly proves that plants have consciousness, and their own sensitivity. In practice they can suffer, in case of unpleasant situations, such as when their leaves are burned...
Compared to plants, animals are endowed with a more complex and evolved nervous system, and consequently with a higher consciousness than plants... We can see in many animal species signs of a collective consciousness. Take starlings as an example, which travel in flocks that can consist of as many as thousands of birds. If we observe them, it is evident that they do not move in random, scattered order, but seem to move as one. The behavior is perfectly in unison, and it shows a deep connection that exists in each specimen in the flock."
So, consciousness is also present in the plant and animal kingdoms, so we are not as humans superior: consciousness does not make us better than other living things.
Instead, what makes us special, truly spiritual beings, is the ability to become aware of the Infinite, to be aware that we are part of a Whole, and belonging to what the ancients called the unified field of consciousness and what modern quantum physics has renamed the quantum field.
We are a part of Infinity that becomes conscious of itself, the wave that merges into the ocean, but to reach this supreme realization ordinary consciousness, with which even plants and animals are endowed, is not enough; it is necessary to arrive at Superconsciousness, which we can define as the Consciousness of consciousness, or the Supreme Consciousness of ordinary consciousness, the detached observer capable of becoming aware of the I AM.
FOREWORD
"Our real order is that of Superconsciousness, which is constantly destabilized and compromised by the invasive activity of consciousness. The latter acts as a remote control of the System, which instrumentalizes it to subdue and control us."DAVIDE APPI
I THINK THEREFORE I AM
The well-known formula "Cogito ergo sum," which literally means, "I think therefore I am," was coined by Descartes, a French philosopher and mathematician, by which he expressed the indubitable certainty that man has of himself as a thinking and therefore conscious subject. It assumes that our thought, therefore the thinking mind and ultimately our consciousness, is our true being, the supreme manifestation of our highest potential as human beings.
Personally, I disagree with this statement.
This is somewhat the heart of my book and the main thread of this work, questioning the Cartesian ideology, in fact regarded as the founding father of modern philosophy, in which the main concern is the problem of human knowledge. This fact was actually present in ancient philosophy as well, even Aristotle was concerned about knowledge, but with the difference that for him this was not the most important thing and was not the center of philosophy. He tended instead to investigate reality.
In Cartesian ideology, thought assumes the supreme role of human manifestation, "I think therefore I am" establishes how thought comes to identify with the deepest self in us
human beings, but this leads to ignoring the true innermost nature of the human unrelated to thinking, logical, and reflective activity. Consciousness can be associated with the Cartesian idea "I think therefore I am," and in this I can agree with Descartes, who, however, forgets that as human beings we also have a Superconsciousness whose nature transcends thinking, logic, and reflection.
Modern philosophy has completely forgotten the role of Superconsciousness, which, on the other hand, was well present in ancient philosophy, and thus modernity is all inevitably about consciousness, thus about the ability of us human beings to reason, discuss, and think, faculties that in fact should not be seen as evil things per se; on the contrary, it is precisely because of consciousness that we have been able to develop science and technology of the highest order, which enables us to live in a more comfortable, pleasant, and better world.
But the forgetfulness of Superconsciousness whose essence is Absolute Peace and Unconditional Love, causes science and technological development to be in the hands of ordinary consciousness, whose nature is to feel divided and in competition with other consciousnesses, separated from the rest of the Universe and in need of conflict in order to assert itself. This is why we see an often unwise, senseless, and illogical use of science, and even worse we can see how the engine of technological development is almost always driven by the military field. In fact, the most important and innovative scientific developments very often happen in the war field, as the development of military technologies seem to be prioritized by most states around the world.
But why is so much interest, human resources, and money being spent on armaments?
The atomic bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki shocked the world and all human "consciousnesses," but despite the fact that those tragic events emblematically represent the "madness of reason," of how that same consciousness can allow us to have a technology capable of globally destroying the entire human existence, even today the superpowers continue, as if nothing happened, to develop ever more destructive war potential, ignoring that terrible warning provided by those bombs that should have set those who direct the destinies of the world back on a new path.
It is a fact about which many wonder, "Why do we continue on this path that leads us to a dead end, with end view our own self-destruction?"
Debates and words are rightly wasted around this topic, but in my opinion generally these views do not seem to get to the root of the problem, of why there is this self-defeating and self-destructive propensity in the human and consequently also in Humanity as a whole. However irrational this self-destructive behavior may be, it actually has its own devastating and impeccable logic, its own impeccable rationality, and it rests its roots in the same rational logical thinking, in the same human consciousness that has always animated human beings since the dawn of time.
But, at least in antiquity, philosophy tried to act as a curb on this "consciential" drift, of this consciousness placed as the pivot of human existence, at the center of the Universe, as modern philosophy did, well represented by Descartes with his "Cogito ergo sum" thus giving full power to the "I as thinking subject," electing the "consciousness-thinking" as the high priest of human vicissitudes.
In fact, philosophy is the foundational basis of human beings; from it springs our culture and consequently our behavior. Modern philosophy, having forgotten the role of Superconsciousness and favoring the disruptive rise of consciousness, assumed to the role of the highest human expression, has favored the creation of the current social, cultural, and economic system, dominated by human consciousness itself and its logical and rational patterns, based on competition and division.
So it is "normal" for a world dominated by consciousness to be in perpetual conflict, where the development of armaments is a workhorse of the major nations, as consciousness can only do so much by being a principle of division and separation. And as long as it is the itself to decide the fate of both our own personal, but also of Humanity, we will always be in this situation and the risk of self-destruction always present.
Only a philosophical change that restores Superconsciousness to its rightful role, that of Supreme Commander of human life, will be able to change human destiny and put the extraordinary scientific progress implemented by consciousness, no longer at the service of consciousness itself in command-which we might rather describe as "unconsciousness ruling the world"-but put technological progress at the service of Superconsciousness, the only one capable of fostering development that is healthy, sensible, and truly aimed at the well-being of Humanity.
CONSCIOUSNESS A LITTLE POTENTIAL OF OUR OWN
Our society, following the Cartesian idea "Cogito ergo sum," has elected thought, and therefore consciousness, as the supreme manifestation of our human nature, but both thought and consciousness are purely rational and logical. They are only a small part of our potential and are a small portion of our brain with limited potential.
So why do we persist in considering consciousness as the noblest and highest part of us, when it is less powerful, performant, and with limited capabilities than our Superconsciousness?
Yet, geniuses such as Albert Einstein and Nikola Tesla made it clear to us that their best insights came not during moments of ordinary thinking, that dictated by logical consciousness, but in a state of transcended ordinary consciousness, a state of Being capable of bringing forth completely new and innovative insights and discoveries. In practice they, in a moment of detachment from ordinary thinking, were able to transcend thinking consciousness and were able to awaken their own Superconsciousness, capable of connecting with the entire Universe and giving us insights beyond the reach of ordinary thinking consciousness.
SUPERCONSCIOUSNESS ELEVATES US ABOVE NORMALCY
Superconsciousness consciously connects us with all that exists, and to understand it better we can make the analogy of a network.
Everything in existence is like a node that can have the illusion of being separate from the rest of the network. Most people are like this, they feel like a node separated from the rest of the network, like a single individual separated from the rest of Humanity. This feeling of separation is the mode in which consciousness operates.
Superconsciousness, on the other hand, knows that it is simultaneously both the node and the global network itself, so it knows that it is deeply connected and interconnected to the rest of the network.
While consciousness thinks of itself as a separate node, separate from the rest of the network, Superconsciousness is aware that it is both the node and at the same time the totality of the network, so it connects us to a wider reality than ordinary consciousness. We get a glimpse of the Superconscious mode in moments of special attunement with Creation, when we have the feeling that everything is perfect as it is now, when we are in a state of deep inner Peace and the silent mind allows us to enjoy to the fullest the spectacle of the present moment
In those moments we become One with Life, there is no distance or separation with the rest of the Universe, while the inner mumbling, which constantly reminds us what we have to do, is as if turned off and there is no consciousness judging and analyzing the situation. The "here and now" makes those magical moments fragments of eternity, and these open wide our vision of a different and alternative Reality than the ordinary one. This experimentation leads us to feel that our existence cannot be limited to the everyday, established routine that adults seem to endure without interruption. Our ordinary life, lived as a function of normality and consciousness, tastes like an empty box and a meager existence in which it is difficult to grasp the true essence of existence.
There must be something more beyond mere survival, a higher purpose of our life, and this feeling we can have only in a moment of absence of thought and therefore absence of consciousness. And we can get there by doing exactly the opposite of what Descartes proposed, "I think therefore I am," and rather by turning it into a wiser, "I do not think therefore I am." This is the key to accessing Superconsciousness and solving the great questions, both our own personal questions and those of our Humanity.
SUPERCONSCIOUSNESS, THE MAIN INSTRUMENT OF LIBERATION
Superconsciousness is not only the key to solving the general problems of our society, but also the starting point for our personal growth, and a crucial factor in our individual journey of Awakening to rediscover our true essence.
At our personal level we need to let go of all attachments and identifications of an exclusivist nature, including our opinions, thoughts, and considerations of conflicting character, as well as our frustrations and determinisms. This attitude of detachment from our consciousness is the key to bringing out our real nature, an unconditioned force, uncontrollable by any external system of control, whose disruptive power transcends any liberticidal and totalitarian mechanism.
Our Superconsciousness is not governable by any Power or Authority external to us, it is not imprisonable by any jailer, it is not subject to any human law, it is a Force uncontrollable from outside and rather manageable only by ourselves.
Superconsciousness is something unpredictable and original capable of subverting the established order. The emergence on this planet, of a minimum sufficient number of Superconsciousnesses awakening, is the greatest nightmare for the system and for the Dark Anti-Awakening Powers that currently rule the world.

"Be shrewd as serpents and pure as doves."Vangelo secondo Matteo 10,16
ENEMIES EXIST--JESUS SAID SO
I consider myself a radically optimistic person, confident in human beings and I am totally positive about our future, but at the same time I am not naive and clueless, enemies abound in our latitudes, and in particular the multibillion-dollar hegemonic clique exists and is absolutely active in its operations.
Jesus said, "Love your enemies," and this assumes that if we are to love them, it is because they exist and are not "a conspiratorial invention."
A tiny minority is still on the bridge of command and has always worked for their own dirty interests, exploiting and manipulating the masses. The rulers of this world are essentially a handful of super-billionaires, who in fact run the hinges of society; but it must be understood that alone, without an often-unconscious complicity of the masses themselves, they could not rule. The latter are led by the acolytes of this multi-billionaire elite, namely the media, governments, large multinational corporations, and culture to think, reason, and react in such a way as to be functional to the interests of the Universal Masters themselves.
CULTURE IN THE SERVICE OF THE POWERFUL
Dominant Power blatantly takes on all its vehemence and evidence in the political and economic spheres, but in reality its dominance is visible in other contexts as well. Education, information, culture, entertainment, and artists have in recent decades fosteredthe rise and repositioning of a ruling elite, capable of centralizing on itself all the ganglia of Earthly Power.
Culture seems to actively collaborate in the project of hegemonic dominance of this circle of multibillionaires, the richest 0.001%, who control the entire financial apparatus, the very creation of money at its source, and also command major governments and culture itself. The latter has been completely colonized and subjugated by the Powers That Be, who have always understood its strategic importance and its manipulative effectiveness with regard to the masses.
Today, in fact, there is no longer a true culture of contestation of the system, rather we are witnessing a cultural sodality and collaborationism towards the status quo. Culture has completely lost its purpose of being a critical voice of Power, becoming instead its servile and flattering mouthpiece, this in fact constantly invites conformity, normalization, and obedience toward the mantras proclaimed by the information, political, and economic complex. The dominant culture seems unable to do anything other than to carry on a pro-establishment moralism and rhetoric whose only purpose is to enslave the masses to the Masters of Steam.
A RUTHLESS AND RELENTLESS COUNTEROFFENSIVE BY THE RULING CLASSES, AGAINST OUR FREEDOMS
Individual freedoms, won over centuries, are now more at risk than ever, and under the most fallacious pretexts, such as security, health, or the supposed good of others, those who direct operations are trying to curtail them. We have been sacrificing, for a long time now, the freedom of millions of individuals reduced to mere subjects, all to ensure the rise of the "Lords of this world," still eager to be able to plunder the riches of the planet, to manipulate reality to dazzle the masses, to exploit 99.99 of the population, and all of this is happening with the criminal complicity of rulers, journalists, and personages deemed authoritative. We are in an interesting era, after decades of struggles to increase civil, social, and economic freedoms, at least in the industrialized countries, which have led to a growth in the general level of material well-being, we are now witnessing for some time now a sudden change of course.
A ruthless and relentless counteroffensive, on the part of the ruling classes, is becoming more and more evident, thus besieging vested rights, tightening the cords of the most basic freedoms, and tightening the noose around the necks of the deluded masses that the eldorado of material well-being will never end. Of course, to conceal the current anti-liberal repression, they hypnotize the general public with an empty debate, focused on details of no account, but which have the virtue of making people miss the big picture, where we are really going. Thus, all this fanfare about illogical frivolities constitute a smokescreen to obscure the panoramic vision, which if highlighted would bring out projects that have nothing to do with community interest, health and safety. It is now a well-rehearsed strategy, to make people see and focus the fake debate on details, so as not to show the big picture.
The sterile and futile confrontation of opinion is well summed up by news organs that do nothing but praise those who genuflect to their version of events. The exchange of views no longer exists in those who would be in charge of informing us, and the more the inconsistencies, contradictions, and incoherencies emerge, the more we see these pseudo-journalists telling it to each other, so out of touch with reality they now turn out to be.
All this "fake-information" theater serves precisely to conceal this anti-liberal counteroffensive, carried out by the Dominant Classes and their servants, and it is up to us not to follow the dictates of the Authority falsely interested in our welfare, our health, and our safety.
HOW TO GET OUT OF THE TRAP?
It makes more noise to have a tree falling than a whole forest growing.
Lao Tzu
If we think, speak, and act in the direction of good we will bring down the mental chains of bad feelings, which are the greatest obstacle to our liberation both personally and globally, the strongest hindrance to the great change we yearn for.
The real problem is not the immoral and rotten system that is leading Humanity toward self-destruction, but our unwitting cooperation in maintaining the current status quo. We should not fight against the system that traps us, believing that it is the only exclusive
responsible for the situation. We are equally responsible for and complicit in the same because we are manipulated and manipulatable, the better to be naively beguiled by unscrupulous Powers, and it is up to us to get out of the swamp into which we have fallen for various reasons, it is up to us to break out of the fetters of limited and limiting models with which we have identified ourselves and which we believed to be ours, while they were merely cages imposed from outside, which condemn us to live in the ruts of the past.
The real difficulty lies within us, unknowingly we feed the system itself through our thoughts, our words, and our actions. Foolishly we believe that we think and act according to our conscience, but we do not realize how foolishly we reason in a way that benefits our tormentors, how we struggle to remain slaves to authority, and fight to stay inside the cage that Power has cunningly arranged for us.
We are normally unaware of how manipulated we are by our oppressors, how the unified-network mass-media brainwashing conditions our choices, how the prevailing ideological doctrine forces us to run on a hamster wheel, in a futile, superfluous, and sterile worldly and materialistic distraction that draws us away from ourselves and the immense capacities we have within us.
The real obstacle to change is not outside us, in parliaments or armies, multinational corporations or terrorism, but is within us. We ourselves fuel the world's problems, but the good news is that we can also stop feeding the system, stop poisoning the very spring we drink from and thus bring down the paper castle. We can liberate ourselves and overcome any external anti-human Power through our own inner change, which can become an example for others to follow in an unstoppable chain reaction. We can be protagonists of an inner revolution dictated by Love and the desire for good, rather than an outer reaction driven by anger and hatred.
A NEW VISION OF THE WORLD
What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the rest of the world calls a butterfly.
Lao Tzu
To repudiate the predatory and violent system that governs society means to act in a way that does not conform to the logic of Power itself, therefore to respond to its brute, hypocritical, and lying violence with goliardic, cheerful, and peaceful action. We cannot build a new worldview unless we change the mental logic prevailing in society and reflected in us, at least until we understand that changing the world necessarily comes through our own personal transformation. If there is no inner change, we run the risk of being overwhelmed by mental frenzy and derailing our intentions.
FROM CONSCIOUSNESS TO SUPERCONSCIOUSNESS, THE HEART OF THE REVOLUTION REVOLUTION
It's not about going to be the Revolution, but about Being the Revolution. We must not unhinge the system, but unhinge ourselves because we are the system. DAVIDE APPI
To be dormant is to be trapped in the limited and limiting enclosure of consciousness, while to wake up is to go beyond it. It is a change in the mode of operation of our brain, the shift from consciousness to Superconsciousness, and this is at the heart of a true, purposeful, and lasting Revolution that starts from ourselves and embraces every sphere of human life, from the cultural to the political, from the philosophical to the economic. Until now, those who yearned for Revolution started from an external assumption, as if change were something to be accomplished externally. Today it seems clear that the transformation of society cannot be separated from our inner change.
We need to go beyond simply changing the contents of our minds, and we need to change the way we use our brains. So once again, it is not simply the change of an idea, ideal, or value that will make us make the leap, but the shift from ordinary consciousness to Superconsciousness, the indispensable tool for accessing a new "I AM" that can ferry us to a New World.
THE JUSTIFYING REASON FOR VIOLENCE
I would like to report an incident that I have also already mentioned in my second book titled: "The Gospel of Peace, what you are the world is, your transformation changes the world.",in which I recount a dialogue that took place many years ago with a work colleague of mine.
"We were in the car stopped at a traffic light, when at one point we saw a colony of military vehicles passing by, including several pickup trucks, armored cars, and tanks. That sight triggered a reaction from my colleague, who exclaimed in horror, "Gee, I'm a staunch pacifist, I can't see these scenes!"
I could see her emotionally touched, and I felt her sincere in her expression of disapproval at the sight of military vehicles. I felt caught up in my colleague's emotionality, and I wondered to myself what could be done to end all armed conflict. The question I was asking then, it has been an avalanche of years now and I don't even remember how many, could not find a decent and acceptable answer at the time that could be expressed, so I remained silent for lack of argument, and felt compassion for my colleague who was deeply troubled by the sight of the military.
Some time later, still in the car and in the company of the same person, more or less always stopped at the same stoplight, talking about her boyfriend she went so far as to exclaim in a rather firm and convinced manner, "If he cheats on me I'll scratch his eyes out." At this point I was emotionally disturbed by her statement, not least because I felt in her assertion, a very definite and peremptory negative emotional charge. To make a long story short, she was not talking to give air to her mouth, she was definitely convinced of her statement. At that moment I was reminded of the conversation of some time ago, the famous episode of the "military parade," where she had proudly declared all her unbridled pacifism... So, between me and myself, I began to think and reflect on the two sentences, said by the same person a short time apart.
The first was, "Damn, I am a staunch pacifist, I can't see these scenes!" The second expression read, "If he betrays me, I will gouge his eyes out."
In that moment of silent reflection, I noticed the inconsistency between the two statements, which were clearly in open contradiction with each other, a problem that grips many avowed pacifists, those always ready to go to the streets to demonstrate for World Peace, but with the truncheon always at hand."
I was wondering, "How can one move so quickly and so casually from a pacifist position to a threat of violence? "
Yet we are talking about the same person, who is capable of making two completely opposite arguments just a very short time apart, in one claiming to be a pacifist, while in the other openly talking about resorting to violence to "fix" a certain situation. Some might downplay such a sentence, "If he betrays me I will gouge his eyes out," on the grounds that these are just words, perhaps said in a moment of anger or under special circumstances, that between saying and doing there is a middle ground, and the person uttering this kind of speech is not then necessarily violent.
In my opinion, a threat, even a verbal one, cannot be belittled, as the same is synonymous with a mentality ready to make use of violence to achieve its own ends, and very often, between saying and doing, there is then no middle of the sea... In fact, as can be sadly noted from black news events, often the honest neighbor turns into a perpetrator amidst the disbelief of friends, acquaintances, and relatives, who in retrospect declare: "I knew him well, I can't believe he committed that heinous act...."
It is precisely this astonishment and disbelief that make one understand how, even a "normal" or seemingly so, person can suddenly turn into a criminal, without even having time to notice. That is why threats of violence, even if only verbal, are still serious because they imply the possibility of their use when needed, and that is precisely what happens much more frequently than we think.
But where does this double standard come from, to be peaceful in certain circumstances and instead even the thought of resorting to violence in other situations, when clearly we are still the same person? What is it that drives us to aggressive gestures?
Certainly, there can be several motivations for violence, but here I would like to emphasize one in particular, the underlying theme of this book, and that is the fact that "reason," thus conscience, is a primary cause of violence.
It seems easy for the ordinary person to be pacifist when, for example, the issue is far away from them such as Africa and the Middle East, in those cases it is easy to call oneself pacifist, but it seems to be more difficult to maintain pacifist coherence in the events of one's daily life, when one's level of awareness is really tested.
In particular, I have always noticed how "reason" seems to promote and justify violence. From the perspective of the ordinary person, the fact of, for example, "being right" in an argument
or under any circumstance, seems to legitimize aggressive behavior. I often hear statements like these:
"I slapped him because he misbehaved..."
"I laid hands on him because he told a lie about me..."
In short, people, when they are convinced that they have the correct view or rather when they think they are in the right, feel as if they are authorized and legitimized to use force, in that they have or think they are right. And we also see this mechanism, on a larger scale, among states, where one nation attacks another militarily, simply on the basis that it feels it has good reasons for doing so. Thus reason, the fruit of the conscience that thinks, reasons, and reflects, becomes the main driver of violence, wars, and crimes, since at the base there are always ordinary people, leaders, and rulers, who claiming to be in the right and therefore in good conscience feel entitled to use force, to restore justice and set things right.
All those who rule the world use their intelligence, i.e., their conscience, to make their "right" decisions, including whether, in all reasonableness, they decide to militarily invade a neighboring nation, economically sabotage enemy countries, and unleash very dangerous arms races under the pretense that they are in the right and thus, thinking they are right, feel entitled to use any means to restore order and "peace."
I find this mentality very common, there seems almost to be an invisible moral consent to the use of force, in case one has the right reasons on one's side, whereby violence is basically justified, accepted, and even in some cases blessed in case there is precisely reason on one's side that legitimizes its use.
And such an aggressive mindset actually finds its own logic in a context in which most individuals live under the domination of consciousness, which believes it is wise, thoughtful, intelligent, and accepts from the height of its inherently conflictual being to find the right reasons to justify violence. We can even say, "The very nature of consciousness, directed toward separation and competition, can only inevitably lead us into conflict with others."
It is the very nature of ordinary consciousness that leads us to violence and war!
This is why our Humanity has lived for millennia in suffering, atrocities, and aggression that have always characterized our history. We live under the domination of a consciousness
warlike by its very nature, war is its inevitable rationale and mode of expression, so until we make this crucial transition, from "normo-war consciousness" to Superconsciousness, violence will be unquenchable on this planet and this will sooner or later lead us to self-destruction.
But this handover, from consciousness to Superconsciousness, cannot be done by sounding nice words but by implementing Awakening practices, such as meditation and silence.
