Edward Grecov, a Biotech Engineer, was forced to work on genetic experiments in a secret Russian lab. He discovered that the military were planning to use his work to experiment on humans, and escaped from the lab.

While he searches for all records of his work, he learns that they have already begun their experiments, and he was the first test subject!

Can he find and destroy all the records before he is captured, or the genetic transformations overtake him?

The Sangar Incident

Eduard Grekov sat at his desk in a secret genetic research lab in northern Russia. The Lab had no name, and very few people knew its location. At least no one that was still alive. The closest city was Sangar.

He had been assigned to work in the Lab until he completed his assignment. It had been sixteen months, and they hadn't allowed him to leave the compound. Two guards posted right outside his door made sure of it.

His job was to enhance the strength of mice by blending the DNA of other animals with the mice. It was the first phase in a top secret project General Lantsov had come up with. They wouldn't tell him exactly how they planned to use the knowledge he gained from these experiments, but there were a limited number of applications for this type of work. Eduard was sure that they wanted to genetically enhance humans. The thought of it made him sick, but there was nothing he could do about it.

It had been tried several times before without success. The major ingredient in the new drug cocktail he was using to help the DNA bond together was a type of mold that was found in a meteor that hit northern Russia more than two decades ago.

Eduard combined it with the DNA from various animals to create the drug cocktails that he used in his experiments. Once introduced into the subject, the foreign DNA was supposed to merge with the existing DNA. How much of each type of DNA remained in the subject was impossible to predict. He needed the right amounts to enhance the strength of the mice.

When he first learned what they wanted him to do, he refused to help, but it made no difference. He woke up the next day in the Lab with guards posted outside the door.

Eduard took his glasses off and massaged his eyes. It was no use lamenting about his situation. The only way out that door was through the completion of his assignment.

A few weeks ago he thought he had found something. The newborn mice showed signs of enhanced vision and strength, but they died a few days later. The drugs were still killing them.

Eduard heard a knock on the door and walked over to see who it was. One of the soldiers handed him a letter then closed the door. It was from General Lantsov. Eduard glanced through the letter then threw it in the trash.

It was the same as the other letters he received on a regular basis. General Lantsov was screaming for results, and was asking why more progress had not been made. The threats about what they would do to him if he failed were nothing new either. They could push him all they wanted, but it wouldn't make things move any faster.

Each week he had to send copies of his notes to a board of Scientists. They reviewed them, and gave him suggestions about what to try next. He didn't care for their input, but Lantsov wasn't pleased if he didn't try some of their ideas. Their request this week was to add DNA from the Belcher's Sea Snake into the drug cocktail.

"As if it isn't toxic enough already,” he mumbled.

He would try whatever they wanted if it got them off his back and allowed him to focus on his own research. He was sure that, given time, he could achieve limited success, but did he really want to succeed? Could he unleash some DNA altering drug cocktail that might eventually be used on humans?

His desire for freedom pushed him on, but his conscience begged him to stop. It was a battle he fought every day. So far freedom was winning.

He removed a vile of the drug that included the Sea Snake DNA, and carefully added the ingredients to create his latest drug cocktail, number N437. When he had the mixture just right, he injected it into the fetusus of the pregnant mouse.

He expected the mouse to die instantly, but it ran around the cage then lay down in the corner and went to sleep.

He wondered if he had discounted the Board's ideas too quickly. Maybe their idea wasn't so crazy after all.

The next morning the mouse lay dead in the cage. The two male babies it carried had eaten their way out, and were in the cage feeding on her. They weren't supposed to be born for another week.

When he approached the cage they snarled at him and jumped on the side of the cage. He stepped back, startled. They opened their mouths to hiss at him he saw their teeth.

They had two small fangs, like a snake, in addition to their normal teeth!

"What have I created?" he said.

By the end of the day they had completely devoured the mother mouse. He threw a live mouse into the cage and they instantly attacked it. A single bite killed the mouse instantly. There was no doubt that they were venomous mice. The speed with which they attacked the mouse also proved that they were far more powerful than regular mice.

He wrote down all his observations and sent them to the board.

During the next week he fed the mice and monitored their growth. They grew at a greatly accelerated rate and were now almost six inches long! They were bigger and more muscular than regular mice. The N437 had certainly done its job.

It was a scary moment each time he had to feed them. They were vicious, and jumped at him when he was near the cage. He used a long stick to drop their food into the cage.

He couldn’t look them in the eye. There was something strange there, something evil.

Later that day the guards opened the door and told him that he had visitors.

Two Scientists from the Board had come to see his research in person. He showed them where the cage was, and let them examine the mice. They seemed pleased with the results.
