theUK.Dependingonwhichuniversitiesyouareplanningonapplyingto,their

requirementsintermsoflengthandtypeofworkexperiencemaydiffer.

However,mostuniversitiesdonotsetaminimumnumberofhoursordays

forwhichworkexperienceneedstobeundertaken,nordotheyspecifythe

typeofworkexperience.Therearesomeguidelinesthatuniversitiestendto

agreemedicalworkexperienceneedstomeet(see“Whatdoesgoodwork

experiencelooklike?”onpage19formoreinformation).

experienceasitcouldcompletelychangeyourmindand

willhelpyoumakeaninformeddecision.”

Medicalschoolsalsotendtorequirethattherelevantworkexperienceis

recent,whichisoutlinedashavingbeendoneinthelasttwoyearsatthetime

ofapplication.Duetoagerestrictionstobeabletoundertakemedicalwork

experience–mostrequireindividualstobe16orolder–thisisnota

requirementthatpeopletendtostruggletomeet.However,itisworth

keepinginmindifapplyingaftergapyears,previousdegreesorlateroninlife.

Medicalworkexperienceallowsindividualsconsideringmedicineto

experiencetheday-to-daylifeofhealthcare,tounderstandtheexpectationsof

thoseworkinginmedicineandtodecidewhetherthisistherightpathforyou.

MostUKuniversitiesagreeonthegeneraladvicethatideallyprospective

medicalstudentsshoulddoatleast2weeksoffull-time(70hourstotal)

medicalworkexperiencetoallowforsufficientexposureandenoughtimeto

gainanunderstandingofthebreadthofmedicine.

However,thisisjustaguideline,andaspreviouslymentioned(see“Where

shouldIdomyworkexperience?”onpage13),someindividualsmaybeable

tosecureplacementsmoreeasilyduetoavarietyofreasons.Universitiesare

veryawareofthisdiscrepancy,andvalueindividuals’initiativeindoingtheir

besttogainexperienceandinsighttodevelopthemasapersonandfuture

medicalstudent,whileinformingthemselvestobeabletomaketheirown

educateddecision.

todomyworkexperienceatasIwantedtoboostmy

personalstatementasmuchaspossible.Thisincluded

mylocalhospital,mylocalopticians,mylocalvets,my

localGPandaweek’sworthofworkexperienceinacare

home.”

Itisalsoworthnotingthatthereisnotmuchvalueinrepeatingmedicalwork

experienceplacements.Asastudentstillatschool,whatyouarecapableof

doingandlegallyallowedtodoonamedicalworkplacementislimited.So,it

isinyourbestinteresttopursuedifferenttypesofworkexperience

placementsindifferentdepartmentswithdifferentteamssothatyoucanmake

themostofyourtimeonmedicalworkexperience–withinyourlimitations.
