Ferdinand Kämpfer

THE ULTIMATE QUEEN CALENDAR

The Author:

Ferdinand Kämpfer was introduced to the music of the band Queen as a child. After seeing the video for "A KIND OF MAGIC" for the first time, he decided to make Roger Taylor his official idol and also learn to play drums. He was primarily concerned with turning the stick. But playing has also survived to this day and is great fun. Thus, in 2020, the YouTube channel Fernando Luchador was created, covering songs by Queen and other bands.

After so many years, Kämpfer knows the band's history almost by heart, which is how this book came about. For the first time, all of the band's A-singles from the "QUEEN" to the "MADE IN HEAVEN" album are listed in the calendar. The data reflects the dates of the first release in the United Kingdom.

Introduction

To this day, the band Queen is one of the most successful, influential and musically significant bands in the world. With songs like "BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY" or "UNDER PRESSURE" they achieved worldwide hits. A great peculiarity is that each of the four band members, singer Freddie Mercury, bassist John Deacon, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, wrote a hit as a single.

You, dear readers, will also know some of the tracks: "WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS" by Mercury, "I WANT TO BREAK FREE" by John Deacon, "WE WILL ROCK YOU" by Brian May or "A KIND OF MAGIC" by Roger Taylor. With this calendar, you'll learn more about these and other great hits from the band. Ferdinand Kämpfer wishes you a lot of fun browsing.

INNUENDO

The first single from the last Queen album of the same name with Freddie Mercury was originally written by Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor, released under the name "Queen" and produced in cooperation with David Richards. The 6 1/2 minute song is reminiscent of Bohemian Rhapsody in parts and it is astonishing that it was released as a single. It didn't hurt as the single and album both reached No. 1 in the UK charts.

The single cover depicts an excerpt from the story "Un autre monde" by French artist J.J. Grandville _ a book that Roger Taylor found in the attic. In it, the narrator attends a concert at which the trombones could not be missing. This concert was used as the single cover for the single "The Show Must Go On". If you look closely, you will notice that the original drawing is designed differently. Above the staves are the well-known Latin terms for the musicians. On the right, however, the word "Innuendo" has been inserted compared to the original. The album, the single and the videos are full of hidden hints, which makes sense in the translation of the word.

The song starts mystical and dark with a drum roll and builds explosively. Later, the rocking part ends and a quieter melodic part sets in, before a Spanish guitar solo breaks in as a new element. This comes from Yes guitarist Steve Howe, who is then replaced by Brian May and the Red Special heralds the second rocking part in keeping with the sound.

The music video was produced by Hibbert Ralph and the Torpedo Twins Rudi Dolezal and Hannes Rossacher. It shows the Casino of Montreux, in the middle of which a cinema room shows all the pictures and film clips from different centuries. In the Spanish solo part, clay figures are brought to life and perform artistic performances. When May's guitar takes over, the producers worked with an important detail.

What is on display is a book that is being turned faster and faster. This book is the original by the French artist J.J. Grandville, who in the middle of the 19th century wrote a work called "Un Autre Minde" – "Another World" – and provided it with curious drawings that seem very lively. These are brought to life in the video before the next sophistication kicks in. The band members then appear in the album design: John Deacon as a clown, Brian May with snakes on his head, Freddie Mercury with his cats and Roger Taylor as the cowboy hero in the US colors. His illustration is again based on the juggler on the album cover, who also appears at the beginning of the video.

The original photos in the album were taken from "The Miracle" recordings and therefore date back to 1988/89. The beginning of the video, which was shot with an air conditioner, is also part of Grandville's story. The character, named Hablle, travels through space while being driven by the wind. Then he lands on a bridge and sees that air bubbles are being produced from oversized figures. These transform into planets and earths, so that he then finds himself on a spherical landscape and watches an Indian juggler juggling these globes/planets. Hablle is the little man on the album cover, who in the original story is blinded by a firebody, a so-called aerolith. This was turned into a banana by Queen (allusion to the banana tree in "Slightly Mad").

The video for "Innuendo" (Mercury's favorite word in Scrabble) was quite rightly given all the awards. Among other things, the makers received the Golden Camera from the American Film and Video Festival.
