Beschreibung

This first-person narrative by Therese is the charming tale of an innocent's initiation into sexual happiness. Self-discovery in a convent leads her to her confessor, Father Dirrag, and she is soon launched upon the path of reason that convinces her that passion and love of the Deity are equal gifts of God. With additional mentors, Therese learns that sensations are but a part of temperament, as natural as hunger and thirst, and all may be satisfied as long as it does not harm others.

THERESE

Are you serious, my dear count? Do you really want me to write down my story? Do you truly desire that I recount the mystical happenings between Miss Eradice and the Most Reverend Father Dirrag? That I tell you all about the affair between Madame Catherine and the abbot? And you request from a girl who has never written anything in all her life that she give a detailed description with all the systematic arrangements. Milord, you are insisting upon a lascivious painting which shows everything I have told you about; and of which we, ourselves, have been a part. And at the same time you want me to recount the metaphysical contemplations, telling you about the tremendous impact they made upon me. Truly, my dear count, this is a task way too heavy for my feeble powers. Besides, Eradice was my best friend, Father Dirrag was my confessor, and I have nothing but gratitude for dear Madame Catherine and the abbot. Am I to betray the trust of those people toward whom I feel the greatest admiration? Because the deeds of the one and the good advice of the others have slowly opened my eyes against the prejudice of youth. But then, you say, if their advice and example have made you happy, why shouldn’t you make others happy and contribute to their pursuits with the wisdom you have learned? What is that fear which prevents you from writing down the truth which can be of such tremendous value to the society of man?

All right, my dear benefactor, I shall no longer resist your reasoning. I will write everything down. Well-read people will have to excuse my lack of style which may occur from time to time for the sake of clarity, and I don’t give a hoot about those self-styled faultfinders. No, your sweet and loving Therese will never deny you any of your wishes. I will show you every little fold of her tender heart, from early childhood, and you will get to know every nook and cranny of her trusting soul. I will give you an exact description of every little adventure which has slowly but surely carried her, so to speak, without her doing anything for it, step by step to the highest peaks of lasciviousness and delight.

Foolish people! You, who believe you have it within your power to kill the passions which Nature has given you! No, they are God’s work! And you want to destroy those passions, guide them into narrow paths. Idiots! You pretend to be new creators, more powerful and wise than the Old One? Will you never realize that He saw that everything was good, and that everything is exactly as it was meant to be? That everything belongs to God and not to you? That it is as difficult to create a thought as it is to make an arm, or an eye, or a leg?

My career is undeniable proof of these eternal truths. Since early childhood I had been told that I should harbor love for virtue and disgust for vice. I had been told: “You will only find happiness in proportion to living these Christian and moral virtues. All that causes you to swerve from that path is vile and unnatural, it is vice! And vice causes depravity and wickedness and their natural results are shame and guilt!” Convinced of the excellence of these teachings, I have severely tried to live up to them till I had reached the age of twenty-five years. I will show you how far I have been successful.

* * *

I was born in the province of Vencerop. My father was a good, solid citizen, a merchant, in a nice little town where everyone was happy and the atmosphere free of troubles. The amorous life seemed to be the only thing in which the people were interested. They began to love as soon as they started to think, and their only reason for thinking was to dream up different ways and means to increase the pleasures of making love. In my mother the vivaciousness of the women from her homeland was admirably blended with the sensibility of those in her new country. My parents lived modestly from their small income and from the money which was brought in by father’s business ventures. Their labors neither increased nor diminished their income noticeably because father paid a young widow who had a shop down the street. Mother, however, had her own income from a rich nobleman who was kind enough to honor my father with his friendship. Everything was marvelously well-organized and both parties knew exactly where they stood. Never had any marriage created a better impression of unity than theirs.

The years passed in laudable harmony, and then, after ten years, my mother became pregnant and brought me into the world. My birth caused her to suffer enormously and brought her a fate worse than death. Due to a sudden movement during the birth pangs, a big tear developed. This made her swear off forever the joys which had been responsible for my birth.
