A desua! Desua!! Desua!!!.... Come down now and pour the visitors warm tea. That voice brought back life into me because I was lost starring into the sky as I watched it pour heavily from the clouds. Although I heard Ma call me, I didn’t move until she repeated her calling. The calling came again, louder and more frantic, and then I knew she was in the kitchen getting the tea herself but she wants me to come and show myself to the visitors.
As I walked down the stairs I wondered who the visitors were and why it was important I greet them after all my siblings were downstairs with them. I hurried down the stairs when my eyes met that of Ma and she gave me that face to indicate that I would be in trouble anytime soon. I got the tray from her and went straight to the visitors’ room where I saw Mr. Peter; the English tutor at my school.
As I dropped the tray in front of him and the people beside him who looked like his family members, I wondered if they are trying to get me married when my big sister Ewoma was still in the house, and the last time I checked, Single.
Then I heard a voice behind me which sounded just like my father’s, don’t be scared Sua… it was him, he was the only one who calls me that. These people are here today for your sister Woma as he calls her. Woma is getting engaged today.
Engaged! Woma was 5years older than I was and as of that time I was sixteen. Not that I wasn’t happy for Omar as I always call her but I was sad that she didn’t even inform me till now. My being quiet and lost in thought was brought back to life as my father and others burst into laughter.
Nice nice… Omar this is nice isn’t it? I said when I found my voice. Desua I’m sorry, my sister said as she drags me to sit beside her, dad instructed me not to tell anyone after what happened to Aunt Mabel when her in-laws didn’t show up after gathering the whole family to her house for the engagement.
Oh, I remember Aunt Mabel’s story, she had lost her mind right after that incident. It was just an engagement party and her parents invited the whole town, after all, it was their first daughter’s engagement. Every family member was present at her engagement, we waited and waited and waited till around 9 pm when the groom finally called her, Mabel am sorry.. my family and I can’t afford such elaborate party, we are not so buoyant and we can’t turn your parents down….
I won’t be getting engaged to you again. My parents made their decision and as their only son, I have to obey them. I have left town, am sorry I took this long to tell you, take care of yourself. I love you, Tony. We all watched her as she put down the receiver. She sat down for ten minutes, Aunt Mabel did nothing but stare at the fan… then at last what we all wanted her to do .. at least to calm herself down. She started crying; these tears as little as I was then I could understand that they were tears of being rejected.
I could not bear the tears that even I started crying, myself and some of the little girls of my age decided that we weren’t going to get engaged in this life, maybe the next we told ourselves as we console each other. Aunt Mabel couldn’t speak to anybody but she just wept. My father has brought us back home the next day while my mother stayed behind because Aunt Mabel was her sister. Yes, and because of the shame Aunt Mabel took her life, after writing a note to me. Why me! She heard me when I made the promise not to get married. She charged me not to.. I was shocked as I read; at age eleven I was encouraged not to get married and that charge, I took seriously.
Ma had warned me not to follow her sister’s wish as they were just delusional. I pretended to listen but little did I know how serious the promise I had made would do to my life.
Thank God you came, I said to Mr. Peter, “Feel at home and enjoy yourself”, I said as I stood up. Where to? Ma asked me. Up to my room, I said as I looked at my father, wishing he would give me a little help here. Let her be, Ella… she hadn’t been able to recover from the shock of engagement after Mabel's death and letter; you know that as much as I do. My mother who was getting annoyed said to my father, more reason she needs to sit here and get over herself before the party commences.
To avoid trouble I spoke to my sister, Omar would you want your immediate sister dressed like this on your engagement, plead with ma that I go and change. She looked at me with unbelief, and I promised I would come back downstairs in 20mins. I crossed my heart. She pleaded with ma who in turn gave me her rules… you must be back in 10mins, what sort of dressing takes 20mins. Okay ma, I said as I hurried upstairs.
I spent more than 30mins and Ma had sent my younger brother to call me. The party had started before I came downstairs. When I got downstairs, the party was going well. People that weren’t invited were strolling in and I could see Pa and Ma as we fondly called my father and mother trying to explain why we didn’t send invitations.
I was standing there and I couldn’t understand why my presence was important. I tried to sneak back in and I got caught by Ma’s senior sister, Aunt Laura, carry the food tray and follow after me Desua... She ordered. I couldn’t say anything but followed obediently. I served the guest and had no time for my friends that came by.
It was past six in the evening and I finally got time to rest my back for I had been bending and picking one thing or the other. I was glad when I looked at the couple, Omar and Mr. Peter laughing as they chatted. I sighed… hmm… then my little brother came trying to make me see his wounded knee. Ekom! I was startled when I saw how wide the injury was.
