The Gnome storyteller Zannazook tells you a myth from Sylâme, their small homeworld, lost into Dream Orb, the plane of dreams. The Swiftlings, nomadic people living in the great Plains were afraid of what dwells in the forest. Legends told of a magical being, Aelfina, that was lurking from the trees, waiting to charm and shape reckless people into wild beasts. When Iuléé was captured by the Invisible Stalker, Elerif, her partner, a young hunter within the clan, had to take on a dread trip to the center of the forest, hoping to save her. But, was he even capable of doing so before Aelfina created its new macabre world?

Trapped in the Forest
Green Tale
In memory of Bruno Latour, who has clarified many of my philosophical intuitions and whose metaphysical proposals have been incubators for my Green Tales.
For the Terrestrial of all places and the Oppressed of all kinds, to whom I hope to give the place and voice they deserve on this earth that has given us life.
For all those who are enchanted by fantasy and wonder, who, I hope, will find pleasure and food for thought in these pages.
Green Tales
In my world, Sylâme, green tales, like the story of Iuléé, Trapped in the Forest, that I'm telling you here, are myths and legends from long before our time. They are philosophical stories that question our relationships and attachments to others, to our emotions, to our humanity, to the many living and non-living things we coexist with. Green tales generally illuminate an ecological perspective with an emancipatory and harmonizing goal. Thus, stories could illuminate our path, shining from the parallels that link this mythical past, our moribund present, and a future that perhaps we could still build radiantly for ourselves and those who will follow.

Aelfina was young when she first met them. The Swiftlings, as she called them, were so fast that she rarely saw them. She had never seen walkers like them before. They had four limbs, but usually stood on only two. With the other two, they touched leaves and trunks, caressed stones, dripped petals and veils of dew. A mutual fascination between the swiftlings and Aelfina was born from these first and fleeting encounters.
But the swiftlings remained aloof. Their attraction to her was mixed with fear. Dark tales were whispered within the clan: Aelfina used her immense power to charm and deceive, luring the careless and unreasonable to her clutches. Those who followed her never returned. Turned into trees or wild beasts, they were condemned to wait eternally or to lash out at their former friends.
For a long time, the Swiftling Clan maintained this distance, which came with a respect tinged with dread. They never camped closer than the edge of the forest, rarely venturing more than a few yards from the edge. The kidnapping of one of their women would have changed that forever.
