"Have you really packed everything?" Rainer didn't always trust his family. That was probably also due to the fact that his questions were usually simply ignored. The fact that his father did not answer could be due to the fact that he was hard of hearing and the larynx which was removed a few years ago did not allow him to make understandable guttural statements.
Rainer would have asked for answers from the rest of the family. But neither his sons Frank nor Bernd whom everyone called Bubbles because of his size which was unusual for his age took their father really seriously. He had least expected an answer from his wife Lisa. Lisa didn't answer any questions she asked some. And she was a master at using it to bring others to Weiglut. "Are you saying we might have forgotten something?" Since this corresponded exactly to the content of his question it seemed worthwhile to answer Lisa's question. "Do you think we're so forgetful?" In his twenty years of marriage Rainer had learned to deal with it in a conflict-conscious manner. He just ignored Lisa like the rest of the family before his question. When Lisa spurred on by his ignorance began to answer several annoying questions at the same time Rainer closed the discussion with an ending "We have to go now otherwise we will never get out of here!" Lisa accepted this because she had only recently come to the pharmacymagazine read that women would be three times more at risk of heart attack if they had quarrels or anger in the family. She did not want to expose herself to this risk because she was not only a strongly ecological but also a very health-conscious woman which was not to her annoyance was always to be reconciled.
However Rainer's word of power and Lisa's lack of reaction to it did not mean that they could actually drive off right away. Lisa not only noticed that her daughter Andrea was wearing make-up which required an immediate cleaning of the youthful face under her strict supervision she also found that her sons were not dressed appropriately for the occasion of a big vacation because casual clothes went well with themVacation but not for the solemn act of departure. She needed some time to remedy these circumstances. Time that Rainer had secretly planned because they had never been able to keep appointments of any kind on time because Lisa had a kind of built-in clock that gave her on such occasions that they still had a lot of time because Rainer always wanted to leave much too early .
And so he sat down in his large wing chair waited for the things that Lisa absolutely had to do took his headphones and tried to relax. He noticed how well this did him in the current stressful situation and he noticed with a pleasant feeling how he immersed himself deeper and deeper into the calm music…
The vacation was well planned. Because Canada was one of his dream countries Rainer had fetched a number of catalogs from the travel agency for alibi reasons not only about this country and they had spent many days and above all nights reading and discussing. Because they did not agree at all about the destination of the trip.
His daughter Andrea really wanted to go to Mallorca because of the many pretty southerners in the hope of getting one of them one day. And if she wasn't going to get one then at least she wanted to increase her chances with the male sex by replacing her own pale skin color with a well-groomed brownish appearance.
Bubbles didn't want to go on vacation at all but instead preferred to be out and about with his friends. Frank who had no friends because of his looks and his somewhat awkward manner would have liked to go on vacation to the UK because he said he could see tons of rock stars there which could possibly be of crucial importance for the rest of his life. Will the fifth be happy if four fight? Lisa thought to herself. She had a very clear predilection for Asian gymnastics and food and therefore only India was an option for her.
As it turned out Rainer's plan to limit the size of the catalogs to a few countries especially Canada did not work. Lisa and Frank had also looked around in the relevant travel agencies and because the travel destinations were very diverse the number of catalogs was also very large and required extensive coordination processes in which one wish after another fell by the wayside.
Lisa quickly realized that India was out of the question given the size of her household budget especially since she was very alone in the desire for a regenerative vacation with lots of yoga and Thai exercises and exclusively vegetarian food. In financial terms there was a lot to be said for Bubbles but Frank and Rainer really wanted to travel. The lack of preference of the rest of the family for rock stars of all kinds also made Frank's dreams of a great and above all rich future tended towards zero. At the destination Mallorca Rainer successfully defended himself because he couldn't stand the heat and ultimately they had to travel in the summer because of his job. Since neither the dog nor grandfather were asked only Rainer's suggestion remained and the catalogs were noticeably thinned out with the exception of those relating to Canada.
As they soon discovered the holiday they had chosen was just as expensive as a trip for five people to India which stimulated Lisa to discuss her proposal again. But when the children in particular strictly rejected the food to be expected which Lisa described with flowery words and Rainer also noted that India was also very hot the rejection front against Canada finally collapsed. Not least because Rainer spoke cleverly and away from Lisa's hearing area about the hamburgers and French fries that are part of the staple food there and thus at least secured the children's consent. After all such a vacation needs to be well planned thought Rainer and was pleased that what he saw was the unanimous decision on the destination.
The flight and the camper that could be picked up on site were booked relatively quickly although Lisa took care of it. The negotiations with the travel agent and it had to be him after Lisa had determined that the actual salesman was apparently not competent enough in her eyes because he had not been able to answer her questions definitively lasted several hours. And almost led to the collapse of the negotiating partner who finally just to finally get rid of this woman and be able to call it a day granted a not insignificant price reduction. In any case Lisa was very satisfied despite the travel destination she actually did not want. The same could be said of her husband because he had withdrawn early and sat in a nearby pub with the aim of not going out until Lisa was actually finished. He knew from previous experience that this would take a long time and that he would probably be quite drunk which gave him a certain serenity.
Three days before the planned departure Lisa started packing the suitcases. Disregarding any weight restrictions imposed by the airline she emptied all the cabinets at home and prepared everything on the marriage bed and the children's beds so that the suitcases were well sorted and neatly filled. In the course of the next day these turned out to be not quite as receptive as planned because the jute dresses that Lisa preferred for the trip and otherwise took up a lot of space. The only solution was to put some of Rainer's clothes back in the closets. The children too would probably get by with far less than they initially thought. And after all Grandfather didn't need so much to dress. So the selection was made quickly and the four suitcases three for Lisa's essential clothes and one for Rainer and the children as well as a small hand luggage for grandfather's spare shirt and trousers were packed a day before departure. The children were also happy that they could use their beds again.
Filling the car that was planned to be taken to the airport the next day was not easy because of the number of people and the corpse of some of them. The car wasn't too big but it was far greater than Jasper's will to join the family.
Rainer considered his dog Jasper a real family member although this was not mutual. Jasper didn't like anything or anyone except other dogs. And only if they were much smaller and therefore much weaker. And he thought of how a dog could defend itself against being deprived of liberty because it was not simply stowed in the back seat as usual but in a small bag which severely impaired its pronounced urge to move. But after just a few minutes his will was weakened and the protesting bark turned into a meek yowl that no one took notice of.
Andrea also a member of the family and between Frank and Bubbles in terms of age should actually have been a boy. She was more boyish than Frank and Bubbles put together which was also true of her weight. Even so the slightest cause was enough to make her cry. Slightly naive and twice as clumsy she walked through her previous sixteen-year-old life and with regard to her sociability left no doubt that her puberty phase was still in full swing.
The question of the completeness which is essential for departure arose. Over the years Rainer had developed a system based on the phon numbers created by the chaotic screaming of the family which enabled him to determine the number of family members present at any time even blindfolded. Rainer secretly always called this the nerve factor which this time did not end when everything was stowed in the car. He attributed this to the excitement because after all you don't take such vacations too often. Even Jasper regained strength and courage in the meantime and barked for what it was worth. However he no longer bothered the others because they could not hear him as the zipper of the bag in which it was stowed had been closed for a long time.
And so the vacation in Canada long awaited by Rainer should finally be tackled.
On the drive to the airport Bubbles asked what to do if Grandfather was suddenly absent. Rainer Lisa and the others turned around immediately except for Jasper who was not interested at all due to the lack of perspective and saw not really relieved the sleepy grandfather. Frank who believed that as the eldest child he had the privilege to ask clever questions said "Seriously what happens if we lose him? Or do you forget me again?" Andrea yelled in between who based on previous experience had the right to ask this question. In order to make it clear that asking questions was one of Lisa's competencies she also intervened Don't you always have to fear that someone will be lost on such a vacation in the open and harsh nature? They looked at each other and within seconds a discussion broke out about whether or not they should look for grandfather if he should actually be lost.
In order to put an end to the useless questioning and to spare his nerves which were already under attack Rainer finally suggested to the family "If we really should lose each other somehow which shouldn't actually happen we'll meet on the 13th in the Berliner restaurant Radio tower. " For this statement he got angry looks from Lisa who considered keeping the household budget as well as keeping her family together as her task but at the same time his decision had ensured a thoughtful calm for everyone.
The rest of the journey went smoothly and a parking space near the train station was quickly found. They were somewhat concerned about the parking fee which as Andrea quickly calculated was exactly the difference between the cheap Mallorca vacation and the expensive trip to Canada. The parking lot found brought tears to Lisa's eyes too considering the costs which as she sffisiously remarked came close to buying a new car because the household budget was actually not designed for this. But with so many people and the luggage that went with them several small taxis would have been necessary to take them to the check-in hall.
Unfortunately there were no inexpensive direct flights to the land of unlimited possibilities so you had the choice of either flying to an airport that would eventually allow flights to Canada or by train which was much cheaper was. And so Lisa had made a quick decision in favor of the household budget that no one could avoid.
Of course the trains went to Frankfurt every hour and of course they just missed the first one. The subsequent one-hour waiting time was bridged with the popular game how to get bored and when the train finally arrived the suitcases were quickly stowed away. The train only stopped for a short time and they just managed to hoist grandfather in with his wheelchair when it finally started. The fact that the trains ran every hour was quite practical because Rainer still had the chance to catch the next train on time to get to the plane. Because just the fact that he wanted to buy a newspaper quickly and thus missed the train could not seriously mean that he could not participate in his own vacation dream!
The train journey ran smoothly and was actually only disturbed by the constant and annoying nagging of the other passengers who were upset that five people a dog apparently stowed in a bag and a wheelchair occupied almost an entire compartment leaving hardly any space for passengers . The noise level was also around a decibel figure that would have been equivalent to an air show with jet jets.
Rainer had done a great job with the planning. The train journey took several hours but he had left enough room to make the way from the train station to the airfield on time because the planned onward flight to Canada was a night flight. What he didn't take into account in his planning was the long way from the train station to the airfield. When the first taxi stopped Lisa first asked the taxi driver about the estimated price and then asked the children whether their father had gone completely crazy. They could turn it around as they wanted one taxi wasn't enough for everyone and two were decidedly too expensive. They also noticed that Rainer had taken the cash before leaving which made it even more difficult. Lisa finally asked what was wrong with running to the airport. Well there was a lot to say about it but above all the length of the way against it but nothing could dissuade Lisa from it. The taxi driver had already left laughing loudly at Lisa's question and so they started walking.
Without the head of the family the weight of the many suitcases was distributed over just a few shoulders. Bubbles pushed the grandfather who was happy like a child that he could finally go on a trip again and Frank refused simply because he argued that carrying suitcases would increase the rate of sweating and reduce the chances of getting to know anything feminine. And after all that's the only thing that matters at his age.
Of course they had arrived much too early despite the tremendous fumarole and it was clearly difficult for them to cover the three hours of waiting. One of them was characterized by the nervous waiting for the head of the family who finally arrived in a good mood and on time because of the spacious taxi and the nice driver. They spent two more hours in a long line in front of the flight desk. Only grandfather had a slightly more comfortable position than the others due to his wheelchair. Afterwards reading material was quickly bought for the long flight. For Lisa a special edition of the pharmacist's magazine which dealt specifically with the diet topic and therefore caused the rest of the family to break in silence and Rainer who deliberately touched Lisa's question whether he would make it this time bought himself a riddle without closing itknow what he actually wants to do with it. Bubbles got a magazine for budding top athletes and Frank didn't want to read anything he would later regret.
The problems when boarding the plane resulted from grandfather's handicap with the wheelchair. Two stewardesses did their best to carry him up the stairs while several male colleagues were already standing up there watching with interest. It gave the impression that they were either applauding if they arrived safely or more likely they were betting that the stewardesses would make it at all. They didn't make it. Not entirely anyway. Shortly before the upper ramp one of the two lost the necessary strength. Grandfather did not fall down the stairs again as one of the colleagues had bet above but he wedged himself together with his wheelchair which corresponded to a start delay of half an hour because Grandfather persistently refused to let the stewardesses take care of the rest of the transport. He was of the opinion that if you didn't even manage to get him on board safely you couldn't move an airplane across the country. Frank's subtle hint that an airplane could not only taxi but even fly did not help to calm him down because he and his descendants constantly remembered the war events during which these things wreaked havoc in the sky . The solution to the problem was then brought about by the hastily procured pack of Valium which severely impaired his resistance and then immobilized him for the rest of the flight.
The further progress was surprisingly calm apart from the fact that Andrea had to throw up continuously which led to a not inconsiderable annoyance of the other passengers in view of the fact that the kills were shortened after an hour of flight time.
Thank goodness this was a night flight during which we slept between the films shown and the meal so the time passed quickly. The food wasn't as bad as they feared. Lisa complained about why there wasn't any more salad and instead this strange-looking meat which turned out to be chicken was in her bowl but the stewardesses who had probably already heard this question from the other passengers were not heard and accordingly and demonstratively showed themselves apathetic.
Bubbles stuffed everything into himself. He didn't seem to care what was on offer at all. Andrea was understandably not hungry and much to the delight of her parents even said that she would never eat anything again which made Bubbles sit up and take notice.
Frank on the other hand because of the boredom caused by a lack of reading thought intensively about what would happen if the flight captain also ate this rotten meat. They would fall to the ground with no prospect of rescue or at least kissing goodbye to his new friend at home. After all he knew that an airplane had two wings and at least one engine and that he had at least in his mind driven a car before so he also knew a steering wheel. So he decided not to eat anything because then he would obviously be the only one on board who could somehow put the plane on the runway in one piece. He also liked the thought of the global headlines that celebrated the rock star Frank because he had not only released a new record but had also saved many thousands of people through his courageous act because the machine would ultimately have crashed in the middle of a big city he liked very much .Because of this thought he fell asleep and only woke up when the plane had already landed.
The whole flight Rainer thought about the luggage. Not the hand luggage in which the meanwhile quietly and occasionally whimpering Jasper was supposed to be smuggled past the authorities in order to avoid the quarantine period. The reason was a bad experience on an earlier flight to Tokyo where he was told upon arrival that his luggage had landed three hours ago but in Cape Town. For lack of freshly washed clothes Rainer practically spent the next three days in the shower which in turn made the success of the business trip almost zero.
Once in Canada there was no need to worry about the luggage. Vancouver International Airport was one of the largest airports in Canada and was therefore certainly a logistical challenge but everything was there except for the previous weight of Andreas. The really unnecessary question of Lisa whether Andrea now intends to want to maintain the weight she had recently acquired and clearly more advantageous led instead of a proud smile to a crying spasm which was only lifted by Andreas's enormous and immediately growing hunger.
With grandfather who had slept well in the meantime there were no problems this time. He was in a good mood because he couldn't remember the drama when he took off and this time there were no stairs either but a modern docking system that allowed passengers to walk directly from the aircraft to the terminal. This hose was only slightly sloping so that Grandfather did not fall for lack of a helping hand but instead picked up speed. With tires screeching he mastered the two built-in curves and finally came to a stop on the baggage conveyor belt. To be more precise on the belt because the centrifugal forces did not allow such sudden braking without consequences. He wasn't sure if he would enjoy the ride on the treadmill because he could see the end of it gesticulating wildly disappearing into a black hole. Fortunately the children at least Frank and Bubbles were very quick and could just catch him just before he disappeared.
The luggage was quite extensive appropriate for the vacation and unloading the machine also took time. Time that an increasingly restless Lisa who had resisted using the airplane toilet because the bacteria were supposedly so numerous there that they could have carried the airplane across the Atlantic actually no longer had.
As soon as they had left the airport building Jasper was released too who initially shook himself vigorously because he had of course not made such a long flight without going to the toilet and therefore had to clean the wet fringes on his body first. Afterwards and in order to establish himself properly in the new place he ran to a waiting taxi and lifted his leg on the right rear tire. The taxi driver by no means happy about it immediately refrained from driving this family. The next taxi driver did not refuse the transport but expected a hefty tip in advance or the dog to be left behind. Jasper who was just about to stop was put back in the travel bag the tip paid in advance and we could finally go on after a second taxi was ordered because grandfather wanted to come with us too.
When they arrived at the hotel they were amazed. Rainer had made a splash when choosing from the catalog. A fine hotel in a quiet location right on the shopping mile which led Andrea to the question of whether they could stay there right away. Lisa asked without receiving an answer about the cost of the overnight stay and Frank and Bubbles asked where the hamburgers were. They were all in a good mood and wondering what to do with their free time. After the long transatlantic flight they had to spend one night in the hotel before they could receive their camper van. So it made sense to take a stroll through Vancouver after the suitcases were stowed in the hotel.
Again and much to Lisa's chagrin a taxi went straight to the center of town and ten minutes later they were lost in the Chinese Quarter. Vancouver has almost two million inhabitants but they all seemed to live outside the city because nobody spoke English here let alone German. And nobody in the family spoke Chinese so it took some time before they were back in the communicative civilization. Nonetheless it was an exciting excursion that was only affected by the constant complaints of the children who couldn't stand the permanent stench that came from the many spices. Bubbles even vomited because of it which clouded his usually good mood.
They took a lot of pictures with the camera they bought especially for this vacation. When the historic steam clock in downtown began to emit its regular muffled sound Andrea dropped the camera in shock. Even if it had survived the fall the plentiful stream of tears from Andreas which then poured over the new piece it would not have survived.
They would also have liked to photograph the impressive collection of totem poles in Thunderbird Park but that was no longer possible. Rainer whose memory was insufficient to recall everything he had seen back home in Berlin decided that a new camera should be bought immediately. Lisa insisted on a very cheap solution and asked if it wouldn't be better to buy a disposable pack straight away and Bubbles added that the new camera also had to be waterproof which led to another crying fit for Andrea. But all three children agreed not to want to do the whole way again just to snap the lost pictures again.
Rainer who absolutely wanted to have all the sights of this holiday captured on film decided to walk the route again if necessary because Lisa joined the children and also refused Why should I walk the path again? Do you think I missed something? So Rainer went off alone got lost as expected and met his family who had already finished eating in the hotel again late in the evening. Of course he was hungry after this long walk and of course the kitchen was already closed. As it turned out his kids were masters at collecting and storing all kinds of food. Bubbles had a sausage in his pocket from a stall in the center of town as he had only been able to eat five of them before he felt sick. Andrea on the other hand still had five chocolate bars three of which were warm in the pocket of her formerly white blouse so that the bars were easy to find again and Frank contributed a napkin to the opulent meal.
Everyone wanted to share with their father what made him a little proud. When Lisa asked if this food was not unhealthy Rainer contrary to his usual way was angry. Loudly complaining that everyone had eaten well at his own expense and that his own wife didn't even give him a leftover meal he went into the hotel room and ate the meals of his children. On this occasion he also discovered his grandfather sitting asleep in a wheelchair which they had brought to the hotel with their suitcases but had forgotten there. But the probability was high that he would not have liked the stroll through town anyway and here in the room he had at least had his peace and quiet.
Contrary to all expectations the takeover of the camper van went smoothly the next day which made the respect for Canadian perfection rise immeasurably and was only dampened somewhat by the fact that the time delay caused by Andreas' feeding addiction at breakfast meant that not that actually happenedordered but only a slightly smaller camper van was available. Well you were a family and you could certainly spend a few weeks in a confined space although the prospect of it did not exactly please Rainer and the children also vehemently denied it.
Despite everything the camper looked like new which the friendly employee of the rental station was able to confirm in detail and in writing. But even the detailed explanations that all damage to the car had to be paid for did not lead to fully comprehensive insurance which would have covered all damage including self-inflicted but was so expensive that the household budget would have been blown. And after the children complained that they would rather eat than take out insurance the subject was settled. You just had to be a little careful and not drive into trees bushes cars or other people.
And once again it was grandfather who was causing problems.
The fact that the camper’s front door was four feet high bothered him and the rest of the family. Although there was a small fold-out staircase grandfather refused - and not entirely wrongly - to go up there in his wheelchair. Frank's well-intentioned idea of building a kind of slide also failed because the door frame was too narrow through which the wheelchair could not fit. Bubble's suggestion that Grandfather could sleep outside he acknowledged with a loud roar and a threatening cane and Rainer's decision that Grandfather must be carried in and out from now on did not win him the sympathy of the rest of the clan.
In general there were doubts about the decision to take grandfather on such a trip because the sanitary facilities in the camper were anything but handicapped-friendly. And Grandpa's age-related weak bladder worsened as you were to notice in the following days and especially in the nights these doubts were not insignificant.
When Grandfather was shipped off it could finally start and Lisa asked why she should get out of the car at Rainer's request and help him reverse the car because after all he had a rearview mirror. Rainer drove off and Lisa's question was already through her after two meters backwards meeting the pole with a wall answered. Rainer was still wondering whether he should revise the decision not to take out insurance while they were still in the lender's parking lot but thought that they wouldn't see that anyway because it was just a very small bump.
It reminded him of his first car. This also had a small dent two days after the purchase because he wanted to park backwards and due to lack of experience overlooked the truck standing behind him. Two months later the small bump had turned into a large one because he was overlooking another truck but this time it was coming from the right. The fender and the rear bumper no longer looked like new and neither his wallet due to lack of dimensions nor the insurance due to lack of understanding paid for the damage because the fault was clearly with Rainer.
And so month after month during which Rainer was gaining experience more and more bumps appeared sometimes with and sometimes without his contributory negligence. After two years he had to go to the technical monitoring association where the car was shut down immediately after the employees there had finally finished laughing. The subsequent purchase of a new car tore a big hole in Rainer's checking account and he still had to pay off a loan years later.
This made him much more careful when driving and the car actually lasted three years without a single dent. Then he tried to teach Lisa who found alcohol repulsive to drive because he couldn't see that when they went out he wasn't even allowed to drink a beer without paying taxi costs afterwards. Lisa was unfortunately not willing or incapable of learning so that the loan had to be significantly increased after her accident. In addition the size of the new car was adapted to Lisa's children's wishes which made things even more expensive. It went without saying that Lisa never wanted to take the wheel again.
But since he only drove himself and despite the annoying jostling of Frank didn't let anyone else take the wheel Rainer's cars lasted much longer.
Of course the still young camper had to be filled first. Sanitary utensils drinks and above all food in all imaginable variations as long as they corresponded to Lisa's taste had to be bought.
The supermarket which was not only huge but also offered a huge selection. There was nothing here that didn't exist and after an hour the family was pushing not only grandfather but also three shopping trolleys that were full to bursting. The shopping process turned out to be difficult because Lisa and the rest of the family had different views on what should be bought. And so the children in particular tried again and again to hide things that were to their taste under the other goods that were already stored in the shopping cart. Hoping that her mother would not notice they not only packed chocolate and ice cream but also T-shirts and CDs.
Lisa however was very attentive found everything superfluous and put it back on the shelves with a maternal understanding look. Only the ice cream hidden by Andrea she had initially overlooked it. But that changed after half an hour because it dripped through the grilles of the car and left a sticky trail on the floor. Frank was amused about it because it made it possible to see exactly where they were in the big supermarket. For once the tears ran down Andrea's cheeks silently because the supermarket with all the delicious food had aroused her hunger and the prospect of the dripping ice made her angry. Frank suggested bets to his brother as to which elderly lady would slip first on the ice lane and Bubbles was pleased with the successful change. At least until one of the employees tracked them down and mopped the floor behind them with a rag and growing displeasure. When the ice cream ran out they too were done and went to the checkout with their now four shopping carts. They found it extremely charming that the cashier even packed all the goods in small plastic bags. Lisa wanted to ask why no jute bags were used but refrained from doing so because of the friendliness of the employee which is so completely unknown in Germany.
Back in the camper they carefully distributed the fifty or so bags on the table and floor. Even the beds had to be occupied. It was difficult to stow all the goods in the refrigerator and a lively discussion began as to which foods were important enough to occupy the narrow space in the refrigerator. Well it was very nice weather and the discussion was moved outside in the sun.
When everything was settled and Lisa asserted with the concentrated competence of her motherhood that vegetables and salads had to have priority and the rest i.e. everything that was unhealthy in her eyes had to be put in the drawers or at best in a small open compartment of the refrigeratorthey walked to action and into the camper where they could just see Jasper standing on all fours over one of the bags and holding the steaks that Rainer had smuggled past Lisa with one paw half of the sausage topping still with thatMuzzle edited. Jasper seemed to regard this as a revenge and his right because he had had to spend the whole flight in a small bag. Correspondingly belligerent he growled at the family. But Rainer was not ready to talk either and pulled the dog out of the camper growling a little louder than Jasper.
With the reduction in meat products at least the space problem in the refrigerator had eased somewhat. Lisa wondered if so much sausage and meat would be good for the animal and everyone else was angry that Jasper had spurned the fresh vegetables and the wonderful salad. In Lisa's words didn't I tell you straight away that sausage and meat are unhealthy for people? The
