Chapter 1: Once upon a time...

Once upon a time lived a very very beautiful girl named Maya. She was very beautiful, with hair golden like the sun and smile so radiant. And oh, she knew she was beautiful. She knew that very well. Maybe a bit too well.

Her mother was dead. She had died some time ago, from stress. What stress? The stress from Maya.

Didn't I tell you that Maya was very spoiled? I didn't? Okay, here we go. Maya, though very beautiful, was very very spoiled. At birth, Maya complained and whined and cried and... Well, until her mother died of stress.

But that didn't stop Maya.

She kept crying and screaming and kicking her tiny hands and feet. Her father, who loved her dearly, did whatever she said. He would go buy her a palace if he could. But he couldn't.

You see, this family was poor. Very poor. Every day, because the father loved Maya so much, he gave her his share of food. So he was a very skinny man, as skinny as a stick. But Maya didn't care. As long as she got what she wanted, she was happy.

With the money that Father made, Maya got dresses with lace... but never silk. Never ever silk.

She wanted a silk dress.

Whenever she went outside, she saw silk dresses. She liked it, it looked pretty.

"Oh, papa," she would moan. "Look at that silk dress!"

"Yes, Maya," Father would reply with a tired voice. "I see it."

"But papa," she whined. "Look at that pretty silk dress?"

Father could guess what she was heading at.

"Yes, I'll try Maya," he'd say and keep walking.

"I want it now!"

"I said I'd try."

"But I want it NOW!"

He would sigh and pull her along. Now, she didn't care about silk dresses. Now, she wanted...

"Papa?" she called, brushing her hair. "Papa!"

Father staggered into the room.

"Yes sweetie?" he rasped. She held the brush out at him.

"Brush my hair. Softly." She waited. He sighed and picked up the brush. He ran it through her carefully combed hair.

"More softly! You'll ruin my curls." She slapped his hand. He pursed his lips and nodded.

"So, papa," she said, looking at her nails. "I want something." Father twitched, but kept his face calm.

"What do you want now?" he asked. She smoothed down her dress.

"I want two sisters." Father frowned. That was a first.

"I can try," he said, setting down the brush and turning to leave.

"Wait!" she held up a hand. Father froze. These days he could see how she treated him like a servant. But he loved her too dearly to care.

"I also want a mother." With that, she dismissed him.
