What is this, this act of sleep?
No memories that I can keep,
Hours blank of every night,
Nonetheless, there shines a light.
A light that comes from somewhere else,
Not the sun that shines on shells,
Shells upon the shores of dream,
Shells on floors of mountain streams.
It's a light that exists without a source,
Yet still, it shines with equal force.
We sleep so deep in solid beds,
And now we live inside our heads.
The mind has drifted to unbound realms,
Where we are free to live our dreams.
Today, I'm tired, want to sleep.
No more words for me to reap.
No more poems in my bag,
Feel my brain begin to sag.
I've got dishes yet to clean,
But I'm sitting by the screen.
Feel the urge for a long night nap,
But I can hear my fingers tap.
Tap, tap, tap on letter keys,
My head starts falling down my knees.
Eyes are blurry, start to itch,
I'm watching longingly for the power switch.
But I love the mental state,
Where my brain is on create.
So even though I'm feeling tired,
My mind is sharp and still inspired.
In the halls of the gods up high,
Where stars shine bright and never die,
The deities look down below,
And watch the mortals come and go.
Envy stirs within their hearts,
As they watch the mortals play their parts,
For though they have immortality,
They lack the mortals' vitality.
The gods see mortals born and die,
And marvel at their will to try,
To live each day as though their last,
To make their time on earth hold fast.
And though the gods can shape the earth,
And give to mortals wondrous birth,
They envy mortals' fleeting life,
Their passion, love, and endless strife.
For in the end, the gods will fade,
Their power gone, their memories frayed,
But mortals' legacies will live on,
Their stories told, their spirits strong.
