How We Changed Our Views on Marriage
First, and foremost, you must understand that men and women aren't very different. Each will look for better in life as long as they think they can find better. Essentially, all relationships are based on value, or at the very least, perceived value. What we consider as better or more comfortable always finds a correlation to what we perceive as valuable. Now, valuable is not only related to characteristics or possessions, but mostly, capacities, or skills, usually associated to communication and empathy. In other words, we perceive as valuable what we need the most. And the more we need it, the more we demand it from another person.
There’s obviously also the possibility that people can be very different and very happy together. The idea that couples must match to live fruitful relationships is a not entirely true, but created by a boring majority, that thinks a relationship only has one function - to raise a family. That is also not true. A relationship, more now than ever before, must be supported by a healthy and exciting sex life, as well as a decision to pursue similar goals in life, or at least to redirect them towards a new but common desire. Dreams and emotions are and will always be more important than anything else produced by the brain in what comes to relationships, and the more busy we tend to be with our personal lives and career, the more this will prove itself true.
