(2) Selena Gomez was named after the singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez. Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was a Texas born Latino singer who became a huge star in the 1990s.She was hugely popular and famous for her impressive vocal range. She won numerous awards, had great commercial success, and signed with a major label. Selena was known as the queen of Tejano. Sadly and tragically, Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was murdered in 1995 by Yolanda Saldívar. Yolanda Saldívar was a former nurse who became obsessed with Selena after attending one of her concerts. Saldívar was put in charge of Selena's fan club and chain of boutiques but was found to be stealing money. Selena Quintanilla-Pérez confronted Saldívar about this and was shot dead in a Corpus Christi, Texas motel. Saldívar was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole in thirty years. The murder of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was a great shock to her fans and the music industry. It felt as if a great career had been tragically cut short just as it was taking off. Thousands of fans attended the public viewing and mass. Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was buried at the Seaside Memorial Cemetery in Corpus Christi, TX on April 3, 1995. Her family created a foundation and museum in memory and she also received a posthumous Hollywood Star.
