Executive Summary of Ageless

Did You Know?

Andrew Steele specialized in physics before he transitioned to biology. He made this drastic career move because he wanted to study aging. Thankfully, he was able to find his niche by using his mathematical skills in computational biology.

Ageless: The New Science of Getting Older Without Getting Old is a nonfiction book by computational biologist Andrew Steele. In it, he discusses the science of aging and how it may be possible for humans to “cure” it.

Steele divided his book into three parts. The first one comprises chapters one to four and tackles the earliest scientific discoveries about aging. He opens it with Charles Darwin's famous visit to the Galapagos Islands which inspired his Theory of Evolution. It is also on this trip that he brought home the giant tortoise named Harriet, which died in 2006 of a heart attack. She lived for 176 years. Steel points out that, in biological terms, tortoises are ageless. How do they do this, and can humans achieve the same feat?
