An Affair With History

In the vast deserts of Egypt, where the secrets of history lie hidden beneath the sands, I, David Windmere—a 35-year-old English archaeologist, Egyptologist, and author of several Egyptology books—dedicated myself to uncovering those secrets. My work was not just something I loved, it was also a sanctuary from my strained relationship with my wife Jessica, whose love, once warm, had now turned cold. She held a senior project manager role at KPMG in Cairo, while I was often away from the city for my excavations. As a result, we were away from each other for days, and sometimes even weeks, which deeply upset her. Every time I left, Jessica questioned where she stood in my life compared to the ancient sites which filled my mind. She frequently urged me to stop my excavations elsewhere and find a work in Cairo so that I could dedicate my time to her. However, unwilling to give up my passion, I continued my work, which only widened the distance between us and strained our bond, leading to misunderstandings, heated arguments, and deep unhappiness. Our once harmonious relationship had now completely broken down. Even with all the pain, I still loved Jessica. I could never forget what she sacrificed for me—she once requested a transfer from London to an overseas city like Cairo, turning down a promotion to a directorial position at her company’s London office, only because of me. I could never forget her softer side—the way her laughter once filled the room when I spilled tea over my notes, or the care she showed me. She couldn’t leave her job to be by my side, and I couldn’t stop my excavations either, leaving us both caught between our passions and our love, uncertain about the future of our marriage.

With every brushstroke against the ancient sands, I felt a temporary reprieve from the emotional turmoil of my marital life. I found solace in the meticulous process of unearthing the past. Despite my efforts to bury myself in work, the weight of my failing relationship kept haunting me like a shadow.

One day, while exploring the ‘Great Pharaohs Valley’ in Luxor as part of my work routine, I made an amazing discovery that would change my life forever. There, buried deep under the sand, I found an entrance to the tomb of an ancient unknown queen. Her sarcophagus was covered in hieroglyphs that revealed her name as “Anknamun”.

My heart quickened as I and my team carefully opened the sarcophagus. The delicate, intricate wrappings of the mummy revealed the form of the queen, preserved through the ages. We gently unfolded the wrappings, and her face seemed to gaze back at me—silently acknowledging my presence and the secrets I was about to uncover. The paintings and hieroglyphs on the walls of the queen's burial chamber briefly described her remarkable rule. I wondered who this queen was and why she was absent from history.

My fascination with the queen grew. Further exploration of the tomb led me to discover an inscription describing a grand temple built during her reign, located in the desert near Luxor. My previous research into historical records confirms that such a temple once existed but was demolished approximately three and a half millennia ago. Strongly anticipating that we might uncover more information about the queen, we excavated the site and discovered fragmented remains of the demolished temple, as well as a secret underground passage leading to a sealed room untouched for ages. Inside, we found treasures, artifacts, religious texts, and a stone chest containing papyrus scrolls that recorded the reign of Anknamun. I spent countless hours reading about her reign, lost in the stories of her kindness and grace. Each tale painted a picture of a woman, whose virtues shone brightly. She was a ruler deeply adored by her people because of her exceptional governance and care. Her 21 years on the throne marked the most peaceful and prosperous time in ancient Egypt, when happiness and wealth flowed like the great Nile River. The tales of her undying love and kindness for her people touched me deeply. I felt drawn to the queen who had lived thousands of years before my time—perhaps because she embodied the enduring love and kindness that seemed absent in my own wife. I continued to wonder why such a beloved ruler had been concealed from history, her name and reign missing from all known records. As my research progressed, I uncovered a startling truth in an ancient inscription—written several decades after her reign—that revealed the queen’s dynasty had ended with her son, and that the Pharaoh of the succeeding dynasty had deliberately erased her from history, fearing that her more illustrious reign would overshadow his own legacy.
