I moved to northern MN in November of 2009. When I say move I mean I was forced to move. I had lost my job, and the place my friends and I were renting was sold, so we were all broke and had no choice but to move.

Luckily for us, my friend's father lived in McKinley MN, so we had a place to go at least. After a few trips up with each care we finally we all moved in and ready to start looking for work. One little hitch.... my friend's father, or our new landlord, had not finished his house off entirely yet.

So for the first month we all, myself and my friends family of themselves and eight kids, all chipped in to get sheetrock put up and carpet laid down. After a short time, the interior was at least liveable, except my room of course.

My room was roughly the size of a walk-in closet. I was able to fit everything into the room, but I had no place to walk on the floor. I remember having to push back the sheet that I used for a door and climb on my bed, and that was about all I could do! It was awful!

When we moved into the house, I owned a dog named Raven, and a pos car, and not much else besides a bed and a TV. Our landlord (my friend's dad) would not allow me to keep my dog in the house at all. She was either tied up or stayed in my car when the weather got too cold. I finally decided to just give her away to a place where she could be out of the cold. That was a bitter blow for me because I had just gotten that dog three months earlier and I had grown quite fond of her.

Now when my friends and I moved up here, it was with the understanding that we would get a significant break on our rent. I had lost my license due to being pulled over with no insurance, and I had a job briefly down in the cities, but the 160-mile commute every day was far from worth the pay. So no license and no job and my landlord walks up to me and asks me for the rent. Would not have been a problem except we had discussed a rent price of 150 dollars and he wanted double that! I had nowhere else to go, so I had little choice but to pay it out of my small savings.

I applied at the local casino and waited for a call back for an interview.

I got the interview and was hired as a custodian with part-time "temporary" status. The pay was for shit honestly, and the job sucked, but with no other jobs in the area I stuck it out and worked hard. I was on the grave shift and driving with no license, and new to the area. Wouldn't you know it I got pulled over for Driving After Suspension! This was great! Tack on another 300 dollars to the bill to get my license back! After that, I did some research on how to get to work and not get pulled over. I had to stick to dirt roads only. Problem solved for now.

I still had no drivers license but getting to and from work was no real problem anymore. I still didn't know anyone at my job. I kept to myself. But I was making money, and that was what was important. The job was pretty easy. Clean bathrooms, empty trash and just pick up after everyone at the casino. I was getting four days a week as part-time. Work-wise everything was hunky dory.

My rent was set at 300 per month. I paid early every month. The living conditions still stunk though. We all shared one bathroom, and I never got alone time. I was still pretty upset at having to get rid of my dog. Aside from the new job, I was in somewhat rough shape.

I drank a lot in those days. I don't know why, but I chalked it up to boredom. My landlord tried to set rules like no eating in my room, no drinking in my room and shit like that. It was ridicules! I was paying rent and could do whatever I felt like doing in the damn space I was renting. The guy was not my parent but he sure as hell acted like it. He would make snide comments whenever I would make a drink or give me a dirty look whenever I was in the same room as him. It was unpleasant, but at least I wasn't related to him.

I got good news at work one night around that time. I was called into the office in the middle of my shift. I was nervous, and I thought I had done something wrong or that my temporary status at work had reached an end. I was half right. My boss said that she wanted me to be a permanent employee! Still part time of course but no ax hanging over my head! I was happy, although a few people that had started around the same time of me had to be laid off around the same time and rehired later, I felt terrible for them, but for me, it was a great thing for me!

I was finally making friends at work and fitting in there was more comfortable every day. My supervisors were pretty good to me, and work was challenging but rewarding so far. The hourly pay was still pretty low for my standards, but I was getting by OK altogether. My next goal was to get full-time status at the casino. I had only started a month before, being as how it was now February 2010, but I was getting anxious to be full time.

I asked around on how to get the full-time status. I received a lot of "you have to keep bugging them about it," "they don't do full time unless you have been here a while" and stuff like that. I finally found a straight shooter that told me all I had to do was keep my eye on the job board by the employee entrance.
