After his first startup, Catalyst Recruiting, failed, Eric Ries opted for a completely different method, known as the lean startup, which was nonetheless criticised by the main traditional management theories.
The lean startup is adapted from a theory developed by the Japanese engineers at Toyota and emphasises the importance of reducing waste and working in small stages, with the trajectory of the company constantly rectified based on customer feedback.
After implementing these principles in his own startup, and given the interest that readers of his blog showed in the subject, Ries decided to publish The Lean Startup, which brings together the lessons he has learnt from his own experiences.

DID YOU KNOW?
Silicon Valley is part of the San Francisco Bay Area in California, on the West Coast of the USA. Its name comes from the chemical compound silicon, which is used in electronics and in the production of solar panels. The region has long been home to the main businesses working on cutting-edge technology, and this favourable environment for entrepreneurial development soon became famous and garnered recognition across the world.
Ries then worked as a software engineer for There.com, a social virtual world. When the company folded in 2004, he and a former There.com colleague, Will Harvey, decided to found IMVU, a website which allows users to interact using personalised 3D avatars and play amongst themselves. This type of social network was in fashion at the time: Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook the same year.
Shortly afterwards, Ries met Steve Blank, a talented Silicon Valley entrepreneur and future investor in IMVU. This encounter was to prove decisive in Ries’ career, as Blank was the one who emphasised the need for all entrepreneurs to really target the expectations and desires of their potential customers.
