Little effort, big rewards

Problem: how can we work quicker and more efficiently to free up time and energy to spend on other projects? Uses: today more than ever, we never seem to have enough time. There is no doubt about it: learning to increase your productivity by accomplishing more without tiring yourself out is the best way to simplify your life and increase your wellbeing. Professional uses: time management, project management, work organisation.FAQs:Is the principle of least effort a recognised theory? How can I establish an effective, motivating list of tasks? How can I stay productive when faced with constant obstacles (unforeseen problems, interruptions, etc.)?How can I focus on results? Are naps recommended to increase your concentration and productivity?

“I choose a lazy person to do a hard job because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it.” (Bill Gates)

At work, deadlines and responsibilities involve pressure that is not always easy to put up with. This can seriously damage our wellbeing by pushing us to work more – an ineffective solution which often leads to stress-related health problems. Another, much more viable possibility is increasing your energy and productivity to accomplish more in less time.

Working better without working harder is not anything new. Becoming an “intelligent lazy person” is a case of knowing where to invest your efforts, gather your energy and carry out a task effectively. It means choosing simplicity to avoid overwork, and to accomplish your tasks without wearing yourself out professionally.

Doing more with less effort allows you to significantly influence your success and wellbeing.

The intelligent lazy person: the basics

An integrated system: managing your tasks and diary with the Bullet Journal

You probably already know this, but it is difficult, or nigh on impossible, to make progress without an organisation system which integrates the different aspects of your life (work, home, family, long-term projects, and so on). If you do not already have one, this is the first concrete step towards greater productivity.

Have you already heard about the Bullet Journal? This is a concept which is extremely simple both in essence and in practice, allowing you to quickly note everything that you have in your head while developing a clear, time-structured overview of all your projects, tasks, events, and more. It is based on several basic principles:

numbered, indexed pages, a subject for each page, chronological, thematic monitoring.

To start with, all you need is a notebook with numbered pages (which you can even make yourself) and something to write with. Next, you just need to incorporate the tools of the method: the symbols, the index, the diary and the collections.

The symbols

Begin by deciding on a few basic visual symbols that will help to you to get into the swing of things and sort all the information that you will note in your journal. There are two kinds: the “keys”, which will differentiate between tasks, events and simple notes, and the “meanings”, which will help you to define the keys better, if necessary, by adding a second symbol.

For example, for the keys you can use:

a simple bullet point for the tasks, an “o” for events,a dash for notes.

For example, for the meanings you can use:

an asterisk for the most important tasks,an exclamation mark for ideas, inspirations, quotes, and so on, a little triangle for things to do at home,a “w” for tasks to do be done at the office (or during the day, including personal things such as calling the doctor during your lunch break).
