Shirley had just come from her fourth-period class and was on her way to the library. It was her free period, and no one would be checking on her. She held her books tight against her tits, thinking. Bobbie Ann Dawson bumped into her in front of her locker.
"Hey, Shirley, you going downtown after school like you said? I'd like to go with you, if you are. You said you were gonna look at that sweater again." Bobbie batted her eyes. "Remember? The expensive one?"
"Don't have the money," Shirley said, shrugging. "Don't know why I should bother."
"You said you were gonna get the money, somehow. You told me that yesterday."
"Yeah, I know, I know."
Shirley went on to the library. After the class bell had rung, she walked through the stacks in a desultory way, looking for something to read. Her mind wasn't on reading, though. She was thinking of that nifty sweater and of the money she didn't have.
She wrote herself a hall pass at the desk, stamped it with the date and went out. The halls echoed her steps as she passed the closed doors of the classrooms. Miss Hastings, the girls' gym teacher, nodded and smiled as she went by. At the end of the hall, Shirley glanced over her shoulder and then ducked into the passageway leading to the basement. She hurried down the steps and put her hand on the knob of the door marked CUSTODIAN.
"How bad do I want that sweater?" she asked herself.
