Cloud and EliasChapter 1 The deep fall

The boy sat on the back of the big giraffe, rode at a slow trot and held the long neck of the animal tightly. Under no circumstances did he want to fall, for it was too deep here into the dark, misty maw, into nothingness. "Eeeellliiiiiaaas!" shouted a girl's voice so shrill that one might have thought she was about to roll over. Fortunately, that was their voice and not the girl herself. The blond, curly hair hung shaggy over his red, sweaty forehead. Cloud sniffled and briefly considered calling out the name again - but louder this time. But before a sound passed her lips, the boy on the giraffe turned his head and saw "his cloud " riding close behind him. It was perched on a dangerous-looking lizard, its teeth growing unnaturally and bulky from its jaws. Grizzled and eerie, a mean smile twisted the reptile's massive jaws. The beast stared at the giraffe's rump. Foam oozed unmistakably from its mouth. The alert, black pupils flashed first to the right and then to the left. Elias didn't know who the lizard had in its sights. Not quite sure of the matter, he gave the giraffe the spurs and urged it to run a little faster over the stupid rope. This was difficult for the lanky figure because the spotty animal had to hook its hooves. Elias felt dizzy. But he relied on Wolke's words, who had assured him that Echsi was a really sweet lizard. Well, the beast had to prove that to him first! The way it looked! Surely Wolke must have noticed that Echsi had white, wet mucus dripping from his mouth.

The boy gave another jerk, letting the rope that served as a rein slip a finger's breadth from his hands. Aluna, the playful giraffe, felt a breath of freedom for a moment, but remembered just in time where she was. Yes, just now, on a taut rope that stretched toward the horizon with no glimpse of an end. Oh, my goodness! Infinitely! I wonder where this will lead to in the end? Now Echsi had caught up a bit with his cargo, the little blond cloud. That pied animal up ahead was really teasing the green snake with the strong, scaled legs. " There must be a lot of meat in it, in this fur," thought Echsi and imagined in his flowery fantasy, how that probably tasted.

Cloud must have sensed that her mount was a bit upset and admonished, "Don't even dream about it. Echsi, you must not eat Elias' mount! Do you hear, it's forbidden!" "Out goes the dream of feasting! That's it!" the lizard thought disappointedly. "Well, I usually get another nibble from Cloud," she consoled herself quietly. The hopeful notions were now confirmed by Wolke: "You'll get something when we know where we are." To Elias she called out, "Elias, where are we, anyway?" "I don't know, my God!" he cried in despair, contorting himself dangerously on the giraffe's steep back. Tremendous fear had seized him!

To make the boy aware of the dangers, Aluna now also emitted indefinable sounds. "My goodness, you stupid child! I can't save you! I'm far too clumsy," she thought, frowning worriedly. "Watch out, Elias, Aluna can't save you!", Wolke yelled at the boy now. "She needs to focus on the rope!"

Echsi grinned and twisted his mouth, which made him look even more disgusting. Elias almost had to vomit. "What an ugly animal!" he thought, while his stomach rumbled precariously. The lizard obviously had no trouble staying on the rope. Perhaps it instinctively sensed that there must be water deep below them. That was their element! For sure she smelled it. Cloud glanced down unobtrusively, catching a glimpse of the incomprehensible depths. "Uiiiiiii! How awful, this nothingness!" she thought to herself, gasping for breath, and in an unfocused second suddenly toppled headlong into the void. As she fell, she tore open her eyes and mouth, but was unable to make a single sound.

"Wooooolkeeee, watch out!" shrieked Elias, bending forward, toppling - and falling straight into Wolke's arms. The latter had not yet regained her composure and was now also clinging tightly to the boy. "Don't let me go, Elias!" she finally screamed at the top of her voice into the void.

Closely embraced, the two children fell into the depths; past gray clouds, singing birds, soaring kites with colorful patterns, and the tallest trees in the world. Everything spun around them and they fell further and further into nothingness. Cloud and Elijah tumbled through the air like two colored dots, swirling up and down and back up again as if in a typhoon. A huge tornado vortex took them both and made the human couple dance through the air like balloons!

Suddenly a huge animal flew past them. Stretched out long, skinny legs, a neck as long as an ell and a fur like a carpet sailed to the ground. Then something else green and long came splashing straight onto the yellow spotted surface. Its maw wide open; an unbelievable amazement at what had happened spread across Echsi's ugly face. Aluna neighed, afraid the pangolin's teeth would sink straight into her flanks on impact. But Echsi didn't want that - not to bite Elijah's mount! No way! The lizard rowed frantically with its short legs and was able to avert the worst. With a thud, the long animal landed right next to Aluna, who lay sprawled on the ground. "Hurt?" asked Echsi. "Nope, just a little dazed," Aluna replied, visibly relieved. "Where are Cloud and Elias?" she then nosed nervously, pulling her long stilts to her body. It would probably take her a while to stand upright again.

After recovering somewhat from the strange fall, Echsi and Aluna set out to find the two missing people. "Do you think they drifted far?" inquired Echsi, drooling. Now she was really hungry and had to restrain herself from biting a piece out of Aluna. "I don't know," she said and backed away a little, startled. It was time to look around a bit in this wilderness. Plants and mosses were growing everywhere around them. No paths or trails could be made out. They called the children's names and searched everything. They walked until they reached the nearby forest. "We'll never find them here, Echsi." Aluna was sad. She missed the small, sturdy figure that had sat on her back. She felt alone and disgruntled. Echsi was a bit more hardened in this respect and not exactly sensitive, because at the moment he had completely different worries. His empty stomach was raging like mad!

"We rest here and keep quiet. Who knows what else is lurking around here," Echsi commanded as he looked around. "Yes, well, you're right, Echsi." Aluna closed her eyes and tried to sleep standing up. She didn't feel like going through the whole procedure of getting up again. Standing wide-legged, she hoped that her fatigue would carry her into the realm of dreams. After a few minutes, the events of the whole day overwhelmed her and she fell into a deep sleep. Echsi, on the other hand, opened his jaw and yawned, revealing a gruesome row of yellow, pointed teeth and a massive maw. Then he folded it shut and fell asleep within seconds.

Crickets chirped, night owls and wolves howled and in between there was a god-awful snoring and a deep neighing. The rustling of the dry grass probably no one heard more ...

Cloud and EliasChapter 2 Dangerous hurdles

The wet snub nose sniffed at this strange piece that was lying there on the ground. The thing was winding through the grass like a snake. It looked like his girlfriend's wonderful, bright braid, only a little thicker and tighter. Grumble had never noticed such a smell here before. It smelled like, well, what? He thought about it, lifted his nose again and tried to define it: It smelled like, like the sea! The spiny animal was now quite sure. On a trip with Resa, he had already felt the salty and seaweed smell in his nose. And the sand somehow smelled like stone, too. What he had once perceived with his keen sense of smell, he could not forget in a million years! That much was sure. Grummel wanted to be sure and curiously followed the trail of the meandering creature. It led directly into the forest. Well, Resa just had to be patient with the food, because Grummel had more important things to do now. After all, he was a kind of forest and meadow policeman. The mission had priority now! Besides, he heard strange noises in the close environment. That was very suspicious! Carefully and as quietly as possible, the little hedgehog crept after the thing and slipped lightly into the dense forest. Poof! He was gone!

In the meantime, the new day dawned and the birds had begun to chirp. In the high grass, whole bunches of stalks were being divided and Aluna stretched out her long, agile tongue. She chewed with pleasure and seemed to enjoy the delicacies very much. Behind her, Echsi stood and eyed the giraffe with a drooling mouth. His little eyes almost rolled out of their sockets, for Echsi's stomach was now growling so loudly that it even rivaled his nightly snoring. "Seems to me there's only breakfast here for grazers," he grumbled, baring his lizard teeth. "Oh come on, Echsi, have some worms, they taste really good!", Aluna tried to reassure the green, creepy guy. "You just have to dig up some soil with your firm, big claws and then tear open your mouth and ... well, there will be some soil in there, too. But I'm sure there are lots of minerals in there." Aluna chewed in between and spat out a prickly stalk. She had finished her explanations with this. Echsi followed the long-necked woman's advice and dug his sharp claws into the earth. It "wormed" him a little! Indeed, he had at the end a few fat worms in the throat. But also brown, stinky earth. Well, one could not have everything!

The two animals that had fallen from the sky were reasonably full, well-rested, and full of beans. "We'll take a look around here, what do you say, Aluna?" Echsi pointed toward the forest with his right foreleg. Aluna nodded and prepared to get her tall stilts into position. "Okay, we'll go that way, Echsi," she determined the route. "Whoever gets to the edge of the forest first wins! And he'll get the prize when we get back home," she shouted with vigor. "Yes, when we find Wolke and Elias," Echsi added, barely audible.

Now a full-grown spotted giraffe and a larger-than-life lizard were racing each other across the dry grasslands to the dense forest. In their overzealousness, however, neither had noticed the long, thickly braided rope that also snaked its way to the forest. They ran as if for their lives; for each wanted to win and clear the invisible prize. The landscape around them was dimly visible and the ground shook as they thundered like hunted men across the rope that had fallen from the sky. Yes, a giraffe and a giant lizard could run very fast and make quite a noise!

Grumble turned around, startled. What was that thunder out there in front of the forest?! Maybe an earthquake? Grumble grumbled to himself, already imagining how the earth would split and he on one side and Resa on the other would be separated forever. Not to be imagined! Resa, his beloved little blond boar. In the thought of his panic, Grumble only saw the long braid of the lively little animal swirl around and a little snout squeak fearfully. This was the end! Oh my goodness! Nothing was of any use now, neither that he, Grumble, had a good nose, nor that he was a police specialist! It was terrible!

First this long thing in front of the forest, which stank so violently and now this! Unbelievable! Who dared to disturb his idyll! "Well wait!" threatened Grumble, setting his spikes to full mast. From his nostrils it steamed, while his small front legs scratched wildly in the earth. Attentively he paused like that, ready to show the enemy his teeth and spines and, if necessary, let him feel them!

Aluna flew straight over the breaches and left the lizard far behind. Echsi however was so furious! That was just missing! First "only" worms to the breakfast and now also still another miserable defeat. That went too far! He slowed now his sprint and stared meanwhile ashamed to the ground. "Let her win, that long-legged and -necked stilts!" he grumbled, snorting. As he tramped along, his head bowed, he suddenly noticed the rope. "Haaaaalt, Alunaaaa!" he yelled in the direction of the forest.

Grumble heard a shrill "Haaaaalt, Alunaaaa!" and grunted at the same moment. Uiuiui, what was going on there? He retracted his spines, turned back in the direction of the field. Still paying attention, he ran as fast as he could to the clearing. He just had to follow his sensitive nose.

Aluna slowed down, because she had heard Echsi calling for her after all. "What's wrong? Are you okay, Echsi?", Aluna sounded really worried. "Yeah, you can go slowly, drooling all over everything with all your sweat," Echsi said with a grin, looking scary with those pointy teeth. Aluna calmed down and slowly walked towards the lizard. For strangers it was not so easy to spot, it was as green as the ground. Only when Aluna stood next to Echsi did the giraffe now also catch sight of the rope they had both been balancing on, which had also fallen from the sky. "Oh Echsi, there's a piece of the rope we were walking on!" she exclaimed with joy. "Maybe we'll finally find Cloud and Elijah!" While looking at Aluna, Echsi only now realized that Aluna also had huge teeth. This one had formed her mouth into a toothpaste laugh with her velvety lips. The two interrupted racers forgot within seconds that they had been in the middle of a bet. They were now puzzling over the whereabouts of the two missing children.

During the heated discussion between the two animals, a creature suddenly ran across the field towards them. Enraged, full of spikes and at least 60 kilometers per hour on the speedometer ...

Cloud and EliasChapter 3 An unexpected encounter

"Haaalt, stop!" the lizard shouted all upset and laid across the race track even before the speeding hedgehog had reached her and Aluna. Abruptly, the spiky ball interrupted its run, almost falling on its little sniffing nose. Grumble was most displeased at this impertinent interruption. "How dare you!" he roared indignantly at the green monster. But when he realized how dangerous this critter actually looked - let alone could become to him - he pulled himself together and backed away a few sentences. Getting to safety was probably the best thing to do now. Grumble began to tremble and his spines automatically straightened - as a precaution for self-protection -; he was obviously something of a smaller creature after all. This scaly reptile with the gruesome teeth could easily have devoured him as an appetizer. But the lizard did not do that.

Echsi stared in astonishment at the person who was feigning a fit of rage. "Shut up, you snotty animal!" he grunted between his teeth. "What are you doing here anyway?" he wanted to know and eyed Grumble suspiciously. But before he could say anything, a huge, spotted something on four stilted legs approached him and his supposed tormentor. Grummel's heart pounded wildly. This fellow here could also have knocked him down with a hoofbeat. Aluna bent down, laid her mighty head almost tenderly on the ground, opened and closed her brown googly eyes, and sniffed curiously at the prickly fellow. "I'm Aluna, who are you?" she asked quietly, so as not to upset the obviously frightened fellow even more. "M-m-m-my name is Grumble and I'm here because I'm the police specialist here. I found this piece, this thing, and I thought I'd check it out and find out what it's all about. How it got here and ...," stammered the hedgehog, pointing to the rope. "Stop and hold!" the lizard interrupted him again. "Now slow down! So I'm Echsi and that long stilt there, the one with the spots on its fur, is Aluna," Echsi explained. "Yes, I'm Aluna," the giraffe nodded and buried his nose in the grass.

"So why are you here?", Grummel wanted to know; after all, he was something of a detective and it was his daily work to snoop. Echsi didn't really like it when he was questioned and squeezed like that. But there was something touching about the little one and so he thought about how he could explain the situation to him. Aluna, however, was quicker: "We landed here. This is a piece of rope we were balancing on. But we still had two riders on our backs. But they fell off first and now we're looking for them. They're lost." Short and sweet. And it was extremely strange that the two children had not ended up here as well. "We've been looking for them for a while," Echsi completed the story. Grumble didn't quite understand and couldn't make sense of it for the life of him, "Tell me, you two, why did you crash? Why were you balancing in the first place, and then on such a smelly rope?" Well, neither the giraffe nor the green leather animal could really explain it and looked at each other questioningly. Both raised their shoulders at the same time, as if on command, and lowered their gazes. "We're just the beasts of burden, and we're from the zoo," Aluna said softly, while the green lizard sheepishly agreed with her. "Yes, that's how it is," Echsi sighed.

"We really have to do something; it won't be light here for a long time. It's autumn and the days are getting shorter. If we want to find them, we have to act now." Grumble grunted and stepped out a pompous step. "Can you help us, then?" wanted Aluna to know. Grumble grunted again and said in a clear voice and puffed out hedgehog's breast, "Sure! It's my duty, because I'm a forest and meadow policeman. Period and out the mouse!" Instantly Aluna stood at attention on her skinny legs and Echsi tried to get his long body into position. Tight and ready to go, he stood there.
