THE COAL SHOVEL DIAMOND THEFT

The Coal Shovel Inn was situated next to a bleak housing estate built to provide cheap housing for a growing population in the local area of Copperfield Village. A redundant mining facility which had been closed for some 10 year’s that left the Railway Station behind it from the coal production which must have been going on for a hundred year’s. The inn had been purchased by a charismatic man with a young wife both wanting to have children and yet yearned to leave them something creative to inspire them with their futures. Their published agendas planned regular quizzes raising much needed charitable fund’s and employed the usual local band’s as well but on this night mentioned something of a far greater value to the innkeeper,

The Blue Diamond is now showing at the Manor House Museum for public viewing and belongs too our local mining heritage, ticket’s are available and proceeds will fund charitable venue’s.

It had been found in a nearby river by archaeologists researching into a history of the local area from one of the big city universities the railway ran too, but had a greater historical value of interest too the local council and it’s populace. Having been mentioned in one of the cities newspapers that it may prove some revelation to the mining process which shaped the area, it also provided information of a time that industrialized the local era yet too Michael it was of more personal interest as he was a keen railway enthusiast. It defined his reason to love the locomotive engine, which at the time delivered much needed coal too the common man everywhere and was priceless for that event.

He revelled in the fact it would contribute greater knowledge too a personal hobby that had interested him most of his life and therefore was keen to find out all he could about it, particularly as his wife was asked to perform all the catering for this local function at the Museum. The village council recommended him as first choice as candidate because of the Inn which could house visiting dignitaries as well as the fact, in the overall scheme of thing’s if plan’s were to change then they could alter the venue quickly. He would be easily informed and there would be a cancellation without problem’s. The insurance covering the value of the diamond had recently been under discussion due too the fact that because it was on public display it was going to be much more expensive. The council was considering sending it to a bank in the city for safe keeping, there in a real vault it could be studied by experts from it’s university on hand and under lock and key at the same time.

Having spent a considerable amount of money on charitable causes and public events too obtain a better paying attendance, the barman was becoming increasingly more concerned that the business was not supplying enough custom and needed a more interesting form of popularity venue for the local village customers.

”My guess is the younger generation likes to have a night in with some lager cans and the older retired villagers enjoy their beer gardens more often than a social pint in the bar”.

He then thought “I’ve got all the locally made popular Beer’s and Wines as well as fine local cuisine prepared on the premises by my wife entailing this countries top tasting collection. If they’re not interested in these local social gatherings then it’s the inn which is not attractive enough, probably due to it’s location and this is beginning too show in my Bank Statement’s. I'll have too start opening up more cheaper room’s for overnight stays from that railway station, old as the Inn is i had assumed it was perfectly situated”.

Two men stood together inside the bar as they had done so for the past few days in order too get a clear view of the advertisement for the Blue Diamond, although their interest was not in the heritage of the villagers nor the pride the local population had found in this wonderful discovery but the overall amount of money they would get if it went up for sale on one of the big cities underground criminal auctions. They weren't concerned either about it being sold abroad too a foreign country or the fact that it could be broken down into pieces by an industrial jewellery shop, even the prospect that it would simply be put into a cabinet for display by the owner of some estate and then never see the light of day again. It didn't deter the two men from making conversation with the inns owner for his personal knowledge and interests as he referred too it’s origins resembling better days, it’s attraction too a wider paying audience meant it would draw from their imagination and produce some much needed self confidence.

He wanted people too come together and support local industry as well as the charitable causes that it would embrace within the population in this local area. Duped into believing he was talking too two interested parties with the same enthusiastic fervour of uplifting community spirit he forgot his own shrinking bank account and joined in with the great event. He explained where the gem was found due to it’s geology, what that meant in mining terms and how it would attract new businesses from around the country and hopefully bring back a sense of pride too the village community through the guarantee of an economic stability which it could produce.
