Klaus Landahl is a German writer. He has five children and lives in the north of Germany. This novel is his first attempt at a spiritual book in the English language.
In his own words: "There was no need for me to be perfect. I chose to write this book in English because writing in another language allows my mind to think in a different way. By doing so, I free myself from the confines of my own culture and gain insight into other cultures and perhaps even in its memories, too. My daughter Annika Lena was so kind as to help me with the dictionary."

I was waiting for months but
I didn’t reach the right feeling for it
because of my own situation
amidst a pandemic world.
It was the early morning
between the end of sleeping and the real awake,
when there came another story to my mind,
the story of
Mr. Nor Lung alias Male Female,
of Mr. Beggar alias Cissie Trump and
of a very young woman
coming out of the past.
The only thing I could do was become aware of it
and keep it in mind until breakfast.

Two men were walking along a hallway which had some windows on the left and black doors on the right. One of the men stopped.
"Now, Mr. Nor Lung," he said. "Here we are. This is the door of your room. Until I give you a sign, you must stay in it."
Room number 39, right?
"No, the next door, please. Number 40. By the way, you have got a new name for the duration of your stay in our residence. You’ll find it inside the room, nailed on the door."
Mr. Nor Lung seemed to be a little surprised and hesitant.
A new name? What for? And why nailed on a door? That‘s a bit strange, isn’t it?
"Just an order, sir. Good luck and have a pleasant stay."
No, no! Just a moment, please. Don't leave! I'm not sure about being in such a mysterious room and, moreover, getting a new name. My name is Nor Lung. You said it yourself just a few minutes ago.
The other man smiled and answered in a gentle voice,
"You wanted to stay here for a few days in order to find your way back to life, sir, didn’t you? Remember, you are searching for some support to stay alive."
The two men stared into each other's eyes. Finally, Mr. Nor Lung turned to the door, sobbing.
Yes, okay, you are right, he replied. Nevertheless, it’s an unusual ambiance, the bright floor with the black doors. The door to my room doesn‘t even have a number. I wonder whether this room could help me. How can I be sure that this is all true?
"It‘s just my order to open this room for you, sir. So, please hand over your watch and enter the room."
Stop! Sorry, only one more question. Why is the number 40 not outside my door?
"Don't worry. You won’t leave your room anyway. Well, it’s really time for us to go our separate ways now, isn’t it, sir?"
The man named Nor Lung entered the room and the door was locked immediately. He stood in grey darkness, with only a candle on the floor for light.
Then he saw his new name pinned to the inside of the door: Male Female. Above it there was the missing number: 40.
