Q

Figure 17.1. A coronal MRI of a 12-year-old child with severe traumatic brain injury is presented on left, with the right temporal area blown-up in the inset, showing severe hippocampal atrophy, as compared to an age-matched control subject on the right. Quantitative analysis indicated the hippocampus to be 2.0 cm in the child with brain injury, whereas the control child had a value consistent with the control mean for this age which is 6.1 cm. Presence of severe hippocampal atrophy is associated with cognitive problems, particularly memory.
