Many FMEA moderators and developers are sent to basic training directly to the front, left alone with many questions that only appear during the detailed discussions. The consequences are often heterogeneous and incompatible methods - even within a company. Our aim is to provide you with this series of books, which include also the latest developments in the methodology and know-how of experienced moderators for top professionals as well as for beginners. Furthermore, we intend to actively promote the networking of FMEA facilitators and advance and unify the methodology (s). FMEA - Introduction and moderation: This book will help you to understand and apply the methodology FMEA as well as some of the related matters. It sweeps away with the prejudice, FMEA would be "just" a quality tool that is carried out by quality specialists. Rather, the FMEA can be used in any industry as a tool to highly predictable, transparent and goal-oriented implementation of products, projects, tasks and services. The structured approach supports troubleshooting, thus creating new ways of thinking (preventive quality assurance methodology and risk analysis). When used correctly, you will save time, money and capacity.

Foreword

We are pleased to present you the eBook FMEA-KONKRET-Volume 1.

Many FMEA moderators and developers are sent directly to the front after basic training and are left alone with many questions that only appear during detail discussions. The consequences are often diverse and incompatible sets of methods – even within a company.

Our aim is to provide you with an eBook that also includes the latest developments in methodology and know-how from experienced moderators for professionals as well as beginners. Furthermore, we intend to actively promote the networking of FMEA moderators, and develop methodologies further and unify them.

Of course, we all wish for something to our analytic results. But if we look back at the years, whether we are FMEA moderators, trainers or users, one might get the impression that FMEA is a never-ending wish list.

Some want a fully automated FMEA without them having to intervene.

Others would like to have more time for good FMEAs. Still others urgently need to save time with the aid of FMEA. One customer even wanted excellent products without using FMEA

In our first volume of the FMEA-KONKRET, we have concentrated on the questions „what do we want from FMEA?“, „what can FMEA achieve?“ and „what can we expect from it?“

The authors considered these questions from their own perspective and have come up with some interesting aspects.

Now it‘s up to you to catch up on the latest trends. Please feel free to comment or send your articles to [email protected].

We hope that the readers of this eBook will profit as much as possible from it. Have fun reading!

A good way to start a career with FMEA

What has Failure Mode and Effects Analysis got to do with career opportunities? Experiences of a graduate whose bachelor‘s thesis involved FMEA.

Probably all of you have performed an FMEA without knowing it. Think of the many concrete situations in which you considered what contributed to something not working and how you would be able to prevent it.

Either way, we face similar questions on how to minimize risk almost on a daily basis. At work, it is exactly the same. Especially in the process of product development, we ought to do everything to minimize risks. The first step to take in this direction is a solid education or a degree. From the outset, young engineers should be given the opportunity of acquiring an extensive knowledge of risk reduction, and above all, FMEA methodology.

Quote from my job interview after graduation:

„We can teach you the technology, but what‘s more important is a thorough knowledge of FMEA and other methods.“

Almost every day during my work as FMEA moderator I realize that it would be much more effective if the FMEA team knew more about the methodology. So it is absolutely essential for me to give a brief introduction to FMEA. Valuable time is lost on this however, and of course extensive knowledge cannot be taught. This requires considerably more time. I often wonder therefore why engineering students do not already learn this during their studies? Later on in their career there is no way of avoiding FMEA.

However, not only engineers should receive this training, also employees in sales or purchase, for example, will be confronted with the FMEA methodology, this means they should also receive basic knowledge of FMEA during training.
