Archaeologist John Smith, who has been conducting a mysterious excavation in the ancient city of Pompeii in Italy for 10 years, which began in 2012, discovers a peculiar statue one day, and after he finds the statue and brings it home, his little daughter Elsa suddenly begins to have strange and terrible nightmares one night.

These dreams that ignored at first, contain a series of cryptic messages about a terrible impending catastrophe that will change the fate of the Archaeologist and later the whole world, and even more frighteningly, over time, these nightmares begin to come true. In the nightmares this demonic creature communicates in Latin and requests a single thing:

Victim, much victim as possible.
So, more and more people die every day!

Moreover, this Devil and his statue, who says that he comes from the other world, from Hell, haunt the little girl’s the dreams and tell her that he has come to start a series of disasters and wars in the world. Over time, he begins to give her commands and direct her. The little girl starts to change without realising it, and her family and the world start to change and drift towards evil.

What's more, as the Devil and his statue from Hell put its plans into action one by one through nightmares, Archaeologist John Smith and his friend History Professor Gregory Kravnik begin to investigate the matter and what they can do, they realise that these extraordinary events are not the first in history. Moreover, even the Bible mentions this statue and its curse. Because, 2000 years ago in 79 AD, when Pompeii and the entire Italian peninsula were destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and were buried under the lava, this Devil had already contacted the world with the nightmares of a little child and led it to destruction. But this is the second and final warning and destruction. This is a final warning of the coming Apocalypse. Elsa finally goes into a trance and communicates with the spirit of this child, whose name is Gabriel, and everyone finally learns the truth and how these Nightmares and the Devil can be stopped:

To go inside Mount Vesuvius, which is active again after 2000 years later,
And to destroy this stone statue by droping into the centre of the volcano, into the lava.

However, this will not be easy at all. Because, a very secret and mysterious Order, which dates back to the Knights Templar and their continuation, has been after this statue for centuries. Moreover they actually worship this statue and one night they secretly kidnap it from John Smith's house. Meanwhile, the nightmares are getting worse and a great catastrophe is fast approaching.

So much so that if this catastrophe happens, the world will never be the same again.

“When this book was written, the "Ukraine-Russia War", which some say was the beginning of World War III, had just begun, and this affected me deeply. I was there when the war started. Hundreds of thousands of people, animals and plants perished during this war. For this reason, I dedicated the book primarily to the memory of the innocent people and animals who died in this war. We will always remember Putin, who started this war like a nightmare and invaded Ukraine, with a curse.

This book started to take shape in my head on 24 February 2022, the day the Russia/Ukraine war started, and was written in a total of 1 year and finished on 24 February 2023. While the final chapter of the book was being written, the Kahramanmaras/Elbistan earthquake occurred in Turkey on 6 February 2023. On the same day, two nightmarish earthquakes of 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude struck the southeastern provinces of Turkey and killed hundreds of thousands of people. Throughout the book, we have been talking about the coming of such a catastrophe, but I could never have imagined that it would become a reality. That is why, as I am about to finish this book, I dedicate it to their memory and I am very sorry for them too. I hope that such disasters will never happen again.

I wish a good reading to all my readers who are eagerly waiting for this interesting book, which I was very excited and shuddered while writing it, and as I came to some places, I said: 'I wonder if all this can really be true?' The year 2022 has been one of the worst years for me, but I hope that this book, which is the result of it, will be a source of consolation for the reader..."

What kind of book is this?

From the Nightmare is actually about a story of an Apocalyptic war between Devil and his infamous symbol and statue Baphomet, and the struggle for the extinction/existence of Humanity, symbolically told through nightmares, and all of which takes place in the present day.

From the Nightmare, besides being a Science Fiction, is a 'Slasher' horror genre. In fact, we can say that it is a combination of slasher and science fiction. That is, there is a historical revenge and massacre based on blood ties. This is called the slasher horror genre and is often used in films. The first series of films, 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre', shot in 1974, and the famous director Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film 'Psycho' are the two beginning films of this genre. Before reading this book, I recommend my readers to watch these two film series and the Netflix series consisting of 11 episodes called 'Strange Angel' about the life of Jack Parsons. Also, you will understand my book much better if you watch Stanley Kubrick's last film 'Eyes Wide Shut', which describes the structure of the illuminati. Alfonso De Molay, the villain in our book, is a descendant of Jacques De Molay, the leader and grand master of the Knights Templar, and is the current representative of the Order.

In the beginning chapter, From the Nightmare, which starts with a surprising and extraordinary fact in the Bible about Religion, History and Science, from the first chapter it is built on the importance and questioning of how real this extraordinary fact is for the world, and especially on whether there is a connection between nightmares and the real world we live in.

This Book is the story of an Apocalyptic war between the protagonist of the book, 'Archaeologist John Smith', and the last representative of the Knights Templar in the present day, nicknamed 'Master Alfonso de Molay', the most evil person in history, telling the story of the extinction-existence struggle of Humanity, all set in the present day.

This book is a gripping science fiction book that tries to symbolically explain many historical mysterious structures, deep state structures, secret powers that rule and control the world and their unknown secrets and some of their facts.

This book is a science fiction novel, which is currently the most important issue and problem of the world after the global pandemic, which is the most important issue and problem of the world after the global pandemic and which is dragging the world into chaos, a great catastrophe that will be experienced with a great war that is being experienced, and a psychological atmosphere of fear and tension that affects humanity through nightmares, trying to tell and reflect it to the reader, containing intense fear and tension and written to raise awareness on these issues.

While I was writing this, I had a lot of difficulty and overcame many obstacles, health problems, minor accidents and so on.

Almost the entire book was conceived and written in 2022. It consists of 50 chapters, including the Beginning and the Final chapter. In addition, at the beginning of each chapter, the book was decorated with 50 pictures of the world's most important works of art and sculptures and its content was enriched.

I wish a good reading to all my readers who are eagerly waiting for this interesting book, which I was very excited and shuddered while writing it, and as I came to some places, I said, "I wonder if all this can really be true?"

How did this book start to be written?

The Story and Memory of a Book Turned into Fiction from a True and Lived Story: In early 2022, I was in Ukraine with my family. Shortly before the war, one night, I suddenly started having bad nightmares. These nightmares continued, and when that bad day finally came, the great war that no one expected to happen had begun. At first I could not make any sense of it. Could there be a connection between nightmares and real life and especially bad events, wars and great disasters? As I started to think about this, the plot of the book began to take shape in my mind, but I was not aware of any of this until I started writing the book. Until that day: The difficult days in the last week of February, when we had to flee the war and we could leave Ukraine in exactly one week. The journey that took 2 hours by plane on the way there had turned into a long journey lasting 7 days on the way back. So much so that my little daughter Elisa and I were in danger of being crushed on the train we got on with difficulty to go from Kharkov in the east of Ukraine to Lviv in the west. Because people were almost trampling each other to get on the trains and save their lives. This whole scene, which I saw for the first time in my life, was horrible, it was almost like the Day of Judgement. You can find a picture of these memories, taken at the Lviv railway station, in the About the Author section.

It was in the midst of all these difficulties that this book was appearing in my mind, when I crossed the Romanian border and set foot on the European continent for the first time, the first thing that caught my attention at the airport was a notebook covered with a painted monster (you can see this notebook and the beginning pages of the book on my Instagram page). Yes, this notebook, which had a 7-headed Baphomet statue on its cover, resembling a dragon-shaped monster, turned out to be the notebook in which I would later write the drafts of the book and start the book. Yes, this story, which started to take shape in the middle of the Ukraine/Russia war, which is seen by some as the beginning of the 3rd World War, could not have emerged by coincidence, of course, and it did. I realised later that I had solved and added some encrypted secrets about the beginning of World War III, which I added later in the book. When you read this, you will also realise that all this is extraordinary. As the fiction progressed, the striking picture on that notebook became the main source of inspiration for the story. The cursed statue we all know, the 'Baphomet'.

This book is a Science Fiction novel. All the events in the book take place in the present day, and although some of them may seem like fiction, they were inspired by real events that happened and turned into fiction. Although some of the people, institutions and characters in this book and some historical events are fictional, they were started to be written based on some real events and life stories. The existence of an organisation called 'The Order' in the book, whose roots go back to the 'Knights Templar', has been discussed for many years. It is often mentioned that this secret and dangerous organised structure controls/will control the whole world in cooperation with the deep states. Today, there is indeed such an extraordinary deep structuring and organisation in the world and it is organised in about 100 countries. According to this book, the beginning of this Order does not only go back to the Knights Templar. According to some, perhaps it goes back to the First Human and even to the existence of Devil in the world.

While writing this book, I did a lot of research on the mysterious structures ruling the world, the Knights Templar, watched films, read books and thought about them again. In particular, the interesting life story of 'Stanley Kubrick', the master of cinema, who mysteriously died after shooting his last film and told about the Knights Templar in that film, and the interesting life story of 'Jack Parsons', who is actually considered the mysterious founder of NASA, who is considered to be the first idea and pioneer of the idea of going into space and the founder of modern rocket science, and who is also considered to be the founder of modern rocket science and who died in a strange explosion, inspired and deeply affected me while writing this book. Who really rules and controls the world? Do major wars and events only start with the decisions of the heads of state themselves, or could there be forces and focal points that force them to start these wars? Could there be mystical structures and forces that deliberately trigger and mobilise major disasters in the world, earthquakes, floods, forest fires and even the gigantic volcano eruptions in this fiction? Could a being like Devil really play a role in bringing about all these disasters? Furthermore, could he actually foretell these disasters to us through nightmares? Here, I have written this book to tell all these things in a science fiction by combining all these things.

‘The Statue of Baphomet', which is the inspiration for this book, has indeed always existed in history and is even implicitly mentioned in the Bible and represents an image of Devil and his worship. This warning verse in the Bible, which we have given in the introduction to the 'Beginning' section of the book, sheds light on the subject and warns us in advance about the great disasters that have happened in the past and will happen in the future. Especially about the evil leaders who are leading the world towards war and chaos..

THE MAIN CHARACTERS MENTIONED IN THE STORY:

BAPHOMET:A demonic figure and statue allegedly worshipped by the Knights Templar, who were excommunicated by the Catholic Church in the early 14th century. Although first used as a deity in history in 1307, the term Baphomet was popularised in the 19th century.In particular, after this date, Baphomet began to be characterised by the work drawn by Eliphas Levi, also known as the "Sabbath Goat". It belongs to the statue of Baphomet, a symbol of Devil, who was worshipped by the Knights Templar in the Middle Ages and brought about their own demise. This profound subject, whose history goes back perhaps thousands of years, is in a place even we never expected: In the Bible. The last part of the Bible, the 13th chapter of the Book of Revelation, written by St John on the island of Patmos in what is now Greece, with the inspiration and warnings of Jesus and God, mentions something very interesting: "A Strange Statue".

According to the book, this is a statue that will appear before the signs of the Apocalypse. The Book of Revelation describes this mysterious statue as "the image of the Beast", which seems to be exactly what we are looking for, namely "the image of Baphomet". In other words, John has clearly told us in his message that a mysterious statue of Baphomet will appear before the Apocalypse and that this statue will lead people astray and cause great and terrible evils and signs, and that it will quickly lead the world to evil and the dominion of the Devil. In this book, Baphomet, as an image of the Devil, will influence the whole humanity through nightmares and bring about events that will trigger a series of great disasters in order to kill more and more people. The only way to destroy these disasters and nightmares is to destroy this demonic Baphomet statue forever.

JOHN SMITH: American Archaeologist and History researcher living in Italy. In particular, John Smith, who is an expert on the History of Religions and Mythology, is also the main character of the book.

GREGORY KRAVNIK: Professor of Archaeology, History and Mythology, working at the Cairo Institute of Archaeology, who is a friend of John.

DETECTIVE RICHARD CORDELL: Commissioner Richard Cordell, who was once a police officer, starts working for a security company after his retirement, and over time this organisation starts to offer private detective services for the Order. This is how Richard meets the Order and when he learns what they really are and blames them for the death of his daughter, he vows for revenge and decides to finally declare war on the Order. But unfortunately, at the end of this war, he pays with his life.

PROF. GARCIA MENDES: He is an expert in Earth Sciences and Volcanic Activity, originally from Florence, who has done serious work on the volcanic activity of Vesuvius. This professor, in his 60s, whose full name is 'Federico Garcia Mendes', comes from a family of Spanish origin and has been the head of the Department of Earth Sciences at the State University of Florence for many years. He had also been lecturing and researching on this subject at his university in Italy for many years. Prof. Garcia was assassinated by them because he wanted to find out what the Order really are and explain it to humanity with his scientific theories.

ALFONSO DE MOLAY: The villain who is considered to be the current master of the Order. Alfonso De Molay is also the villain of the book and is a descendant of his great-grandfather, Jacques De Molay, once grand master of the Knights Templar. Alfonso de Molay is so evil and so consumed with revenge that he works with all his might to avenge his great-grandfather and the Knights Templar, slaughtering millions of people, burying them in mass graves, and sending many others, including clergymen, to their deaths through horrific torture at the headquarters of the Order called ‘The Temple’. His ultimate goal is to one day recover the original statue of Baphomet, which has been lost for centuries, and through a bloody ritual that will be carried out through this statue and the nightmares it sends to humanity, to reactivate the volcano Vesuvius as it was 2000 years ago, and thus to destroy the Vatican and the Pope at its head forever. Although Alfonso succeeds in realising this at the end of the book, he himself cannot escape death and falls into Vesuvius and burns to death.

THE ORDER:The existence of an organisation called 'The Order in the book, whose roots go back to ‘the Knights Templar', has been discussed for many years. It is often mentioned that this secret and dangerous organised structure controls/will control the whole world in cooperation with deep states. Today, there is indeed such an extraordinary deep structuring and organisation in the world and it is organised in about 100 countries. According to this book, the beginning of this Order does not only go back to the Knights Templar. According to some, the Order perhaps goes back to the First Man and even to the existence of the Devil in the world.

According to the book, in order to continue its existence in history, even after the Templars were destroyed by the Pope through Christianity, 'The Order' continued its existence through a group of secret organisations or members of the Order, using the deep structures of the states after this worship and satanic religion. In fact, it has continued even until today and still has hundreds of thousands and millions of members. Even famous names, Heads of State, businessmen and artists are among them.

IMPORTANT PLACES MENTIONED IN THE STORY:

POMPEII: The ancient Roman city of Pompeii, known in antiquity as 'Pompeii', is a partially buried ruined ancient Roman city still partially buried near the city of Naples in the partially autonomous region of Campania, Italy, within the boundaries of the Commune of Pompeii. Together with the nearby Herculaneum, it was buried under volcanic ash and cinders after two days of activity of Mount Vesuvius on 24 August 79 and completely destroyed. All the people and animals, including those inside, were petrified under the lava and their statues have survived to the present day. Lost for about 1700 years after the terrible eruption of Vesuvius, the city was rediscovered by chance in 1748. Since then, excavations have uncovered much information about the city, providing insights into life in the cities of the Roman Empire. However, scientists and archaeologists believe that many more unknown secrets of the city lie underground. Archaeologist John Smith, the hero of our story, finds a statue of Baphomet by chance at the excavation site in Pompeii, which will change the fate of all mankind.

PARIS: The capital of France, where the headquarters of the Order is located. Paris has historically been a centre for mystics and secret orders, including the Knights Templar. According to the book, Aleister Crowley and Jack Parsons, the great masters of the Order in the last century, met here in a mysterious café. Paris is a special location for the events in the book, as the main building and headquarters of the Order, the 'The Temple', is located here and some of them take place here.

FLORANSA: Florence is a city in Italy, a centre of Art, Science, History, Magic, Occultism, Occultism and Medicine, from the mythological Roman period in antiquity to the Knights Templar period and from there to the Renaissance enlightenment period in the Middle Ages. It is also the capital of the Tuscany Region in Northern Italy and the centre of the province that bears its name. For a short period it was also the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. The city was built around the Arno River that flows through it. Florence is the starting point of the events of the book and the beginning of the great massacres carried out by the Order, including the assassinations of religious and scientific figures interested in Vesuvius.

NAPLES: It is the largest city closest to Mount Vesuvius. Some of the events in the book take place near Naples and in the region close to Mount Vesuvius. While a group of scientists want to go to Naples to do research on Vesuvius, nightmares begin to take effect and great disasters begin to happen one by one.

ROMANIA: A mysterious country in Eastern Europe, famous for its caves and castles. It is where the finale of the story takes place. When Mount Vesuvius erupts again, Italy and the whole European continent are covered in ash and toxic smoke. John Smith and his friends learn that there is only one place to escape: An ancient underground cave system known as 'Movile' in Romania.

An archaeological team carrying out excavation work in the ancient city of Pompeii enters the hall of a large house. They encounter a hard floor about 2 metres below the ground. Although the excavations continue, strangely, they are unable to overcome this huge stone block.

In the immediate vicinity of this stone block the petrified corpses of about 10 people are lying on the ground, wrapped around each other. Despite many years of detailed research, archaeologists and scientists can not find an explanation for this phenomenon. Several times they have tried to drill through the stone block to find out what is underneath, but they have not been successful over the years.

Unable to be pierced with any cutting tool, this block and what lies beyond it remains a mystery for years. Until, another archaeologist uses a different route to find out what lies beyond 10 years later..

THE DESTRUCTION OF POMPEII

WHAT REALLY HAPPENED IN POMPEII?

"Something blew up in Pompeii, but it wasn't just a volcano... not really. One of the four towers of Babylon and one of the gates of Hell was beneath it. And Mundus, knowing this, decided to return to it by lifting Sparda out from under the Earth early. He thought this would give him the power to knock Sparda down, but all it gave him was a spanking at the end. Still, all this doesn't change the fact that so many people died that day, and it haunted Sparda for years. Because he had the powers of a god... but he still couldn't save all the people..."

“The Destruction of Pompeii was a catastrophic event involving the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, a large supervolcano in southern Italy in 79 AD, one of the deadliest destructions in European history. However, while believed to be the eruption of a volcano, it was actually caused by the early rise of one of the four Towers of Babel in the inner world, which were built and later hidden beneath the Earth.

The cause of the tower's explosion was Mundus, who, after his defeat by Sparda, tried to use the power inside the tower to dominate the Earth. However, this caused a major disruption in Lucifer's (another name for the Devil) plan and Mundus was severely punished by Baalzebub (an image, statue of the Devil known in ancient times).

One of the Towers of Babel rose from inside Mount Vesuvius, causing deadly clouds of superheated lava and gases to erupt violently 33 km (21 miles) high, spewing molten rock, pulverised pressurised pumice and 1.5 million tonnes of hot ash. The latter eventually released 100,000 times the thermal energy of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. At the time, the area was part of the Roman Empire, and several Roman cities were destroyed and buried under huge pyroclastic waves and ash deposits; these are known as Pompeii and Herculaneum."

"The explosion was said to have lasted for two days. On the morning of the first day, the only eyewitness who survived and left behind a document was the Young Pliny (Plinius, who was also a naturalist and natural philosopher, who remained at Misenum, about 29 kilometers (18 miles) away, on the other side of the Bay of Naples.He was one of the greatest scholars killed by Vesuvius!) Pliny had recognised the signs of the eruption early on, but this did not prevent him from avoiding the catastrophe. Moreover, Pliny once wrote that he had terrible nightmares months before the catastrophe. For two days after the catastrophe, people from Pompeii or Herculaneum who witnessed and survived the eruption did not have the opportunity to talk to other people; therefore, if such a thing had happened, they would have been able to notice the smaller cracks in the mountain, the ash and smoke releases early in the morning and inform others early in the morning.

At around 1:00 p.m., Mount Vesuvius erupted violently again and covered the entire area, spewing lava and ash in a high-altitude column and pumice began to fall. During this time, survivors and escapes occurred. Later that night or early the next day, pyroclastic flows began in the immediate vicinity of the volcano. The lights seen on the mountain were interpreted by people in the distance as fire, and they too could not escape the disaster. Sparda, disguised as a human, rescued as many as he could from the relentless flames, while people as far away as the city of Misenum fled for their lives. The lava flow was very fast-moving, intense and very hot, completely or partially destroying all structures in its path, burning or drowning the remaining population and rapidly changing the entire landscape, including the coastline. New findings in the city of Pompeii, which was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Italy, will cause history books to be revised. Until today, it was accepted that the ancient Roman city of Pompeii was buried under volcanic ash and slag as a result of the two-day activity of Mount Vesuvius on 24 August 79.

However, archaeologists have discovered a mysterious inscription on the remains of the walls of a house in Pompeii, presumably belonging to a labourer: "16 days before the November date, something very important, something terrible happened!". It was confirmed that the writing belonged to that period. When the city, which fell into a deep sleep for about 1700 years, was accidentally rediscovered in 1748, there were still many secrets hidden under the lava..

2000 years ago a huge ash cloud engulfed everything and everyone, killing 2,000 people in the first instant of the explosion and bringing life in Pompeii to a permanent standstill.

Well, now we begin our true story!

Italy, August 2022 (10 Years Later)

Ancient City ofPompeii (The Excavation Site)

Archaeologist John Smith has returned to Italy after a long break from his work after the pandemic and continues his excavations in Pompeii. While trying to find out what is underneath by digging a different tunnel path in an impassable hard ground, he reaches a small room about 3 metres below the stone floor and a large hall lying next to it, which has never been discovered before. This area is just below the 10 petrified corpses lying side by side, wrapped in each other, found exactly 10 years ago in 2012.

While many historical and valuable pieces were being carefully excavated under the ancient city, that hot August day, John Smith and his colleagues found a strange and interesting piece that was quite surprising and unlike any of the pieces they had previously excavated:

A Small Statue

Although quite small in size, this statue, which is understood to be from pagan times and buried underground with the lava, has two long horns and a frightening gaze that attracts attention:

After examining the statue for a while, John Smith decided to secretly put it in his bag and take it home to collect more information about it and take detailed pictures of it. This is where the real events begin and continue.

After a busy day of excavation work with his colleagues, John Smith headed to his office for a little rest in the early evening, opened the door and entered with heavy steps. Then he pressed the diaphone and asked his assistant for something cold to drink:

- "Julia, can you please bring me something cold and leave it on my desk. I had a very tiring day today, but it was worth it. Don't ask me why now, I want to show you something when you come to my room, but please keep it between us, understood?"

Julia replied in an excited tone, as if she was about to see a treasure, and started to prepare the drinks and headed towards John Smith's study room:

- "Of course, sir. I'll get it ready and bring it round at once, but I must confess I was rather curious to see what you were going to show me. I hope it is different from the kitchen utensils you found before. If you remember, last time you found a bronze cross mounted on the floor in the kitchen of a family home. However, it seemed unlikely that Christianity had even reached Pompeii in 79 AD when the eruption took place. I have always believed that there was a much more mysterious secret of this ancient city under the lava. Perhaps what you are looking for or what you think you have found may be related to that this time. Am I right, sir?"

John Smith:

- "You may be right, Julia, but you know my beliefs are not very strong about religions. Moreover, I don't believe in such religious prophecies except for archaeological evidence. But I always felt that this place, Pompeii, had a very different, ancient and mystical, very old energy during the time we were excavating. Yes, the idea that that bronze cross could have somehow reached here at that time, that is, in the years when Christianity had not yet spread in a place far away from Palestine, where Jesus lived, is an interesting subject, but I would also like to say that the symbol of the cross existed in the world long before Christianity. This could be one of them, of course. But you won't believe your eyes when you see what I found today. Reaching for the two large glasses of coke she had hastily taken out of the cupboard and placing them on a tray, Julia left the kitchen and started walking towards John Smith's office at the end of the excavation site. She creaked open the office door, which was swollen from the heat, and entered with a tray in her hand, smiling and looking excited at the same time.

John Smith:

- "Oh, there you are, Julia. That was quick! That was quicker than I expected. I always thought you were slow with the service. What I said must have excited you. Come, please, put the drinks on my table and see what I've found. Here it is, here it is. The surprise detail of the day."

Julia:

- "'Honestly, sir, I'm excited by what you're saying. You know, we've been finding some interesting things in Pompeii lately. Things that maybe shouldn't belong here. I don't know, maybe this is one of them and we may need time to figure it out. That's why I wanted to see it right away."

After taking a sip from the glass of coke on the table, John Smith leaned back in his chair and gestured with his hand for Julia to open a small wooden chest on the table, which was obviously very old:

- "Here is our hero, Julia, in this rusty and dusty old wooden chest. I found it today at the very bottom of the parlour of the house we were excavating. It seemed to be hidden tightly under a stone block. I confess that I spent hours trying to get it out without breaking it, but when we open it, you will be amazed and believe that it was worth it."

Julia:

- "Well, I'd like to see it at once, sir. Please, can we open it carefully right away? I really want to know what's inside."

John Smith:

- "Okay, but be careful. The wood is so old it could break when you open and close it, and I don't want that to happen. We mustn't damage it."

Opening the lid carefully, Julia could not believe her eyes when she saw the small stone statue and let out a scream:

- "Oh, my God! John, this is a pre-ancient statue of Pan. I mean, it's also known as a symbol of the Devil, the earliest examples of which are only found in the Middle East and Babylon. But what is this statue doing in Pompeii? More precisely, how could it have come here? As far as I know, the Middle Eastern culture of Pan had no connection with the Roman Empire or this area at the time. God, his face looks horrible. That bronze cross and then this weird, horrible statue. What's going on here? The more we've been digging, the weirder things have been turning up lately. It really does look frightening. So, what do you intend to do with it, sir? Will you inform the authorities about this discovery?"

John Smith:

- "No, I don't think so, Julia. I don't think I'm going to tell them right away. I'm thinking of taking it home first and doing a little research on it for a while. Maybe we should discuss it with our old friend Gregory Kravnik in Cairo, Egypt. I would like to ask him a few questions about this statue, because these recent excavations are beginning to frighten and worry me too. Besides, the world is not getting any better lately. This year, when the great wars have started again, my worries have increased. Gregory may be able to help us with that. You know, we know he lectures on ancient history and prehistory. Then, while looking towards the sculpture with the horrible face, Julia intervened again, anxiously asking something:

- "But, sir, don't you think it would be objectionable for us to act in this way? I mean, taking it to your home without the permission of the authorities, examining it and taking pictures of it. Wouldn't it be better to inform the authorities about this invention first and ask for permission for this research?"

John Smith replied in a confident tone:

- "You may be right, Julia, but if we tell them first, they may not give us the necessary authorisation. I mean, to take him home. And that would prevent us from learning a lot of things about him. Like that bronze cross we found earlier. I don't want that to happen again. If you remember, about three months ago, when we found it about three metres under the ground near the house, the authorities just took it away from us and left it alone. I think someone or the Vatican itself does not want some hidden facts about deep history to be revealed. Not a single piece of archaeological evidence has been found to prove any of it. Do you think all this could be a coincidence? There are hundreds of accounts, writings and rumours in history that Jesus really lived, but just think, even a single piece of clothing, shroud or a single piece of wood from the cross on which Jesus was crucified could shake the Vatican and the world. Because the Vatican is of the opinion that Jesus is more than a man, he is God, and a piece of cloth or a piece of wood belonging to Jesus could change everything forever. Because in this case Jesus would have become a mere mortal like us, a human being who lived and died. Perhaps the Vatican destroyed all this archaeological evidence in order to establish him as God. That's why we'll examine this symbolic statue of the Devil Pan and then hand it over. Now, do you understand it better, Julia?"

Julia:

- "I understand much better now, sir. You are quite right in what you say. What you have found is a symbolic continuation of the religious mythology between the Devil and God on Earth, and it seems to be quite old. Perhaps one of the ancient Babylonian copies of Pan was transported here and hidden underground. Later, when Vesuvius erupted, it too remained hidden under the earth for thousands of years. John Smith:

- "Yes, you'd better switch it off, Julia. I'll take it home with me today and then we'll let Gregory know so he can analyse it. Hopefully we can get something useful out of it. Because it really doesn't look like it belongs here. Maybe it was brought here from the Middle East on a ship or something. I'm guessing it's got to be well over 2,000 years old. It looks at least 5,000 or 6,000 years old. The only way we'll know is if we get the lab guys to help us run a carbon-14 test. All right, Julia, it's almost nightfall. Let's take her with us and get out of here. There doesn't seem to be anyone left at the dig site but us."

Julia:

- "You're right, sir. So I'll see you tomorrow. I wish you a good evening. See you tomorrow."

John Smith:

- "Well, Julia, I want to tell you something. I may not be in the office for a few days. I want to investigate this thing in detail. Please answer my calls for a while and if anyone calls me, make an appointment for a few days later. Understood?"

Julia:

- "Understood, sir. Good evening. Goodbye for now and good work."

After carefully placing the old wooden chest containing the statue of Pan in a box in the boot of his car, John Smith set off for his home in Florence. It would take about 5 hours to go from Pompeii to Florence and he would be home around midnight. Of course, this time with a strange and mysterious surprise..
