Have you ever asked yourself why we get old and grey? What goes wrong in our bodies to make it hard to live more than 100 years? Scientists have studied these questions for decades, but do you really want to struggle through hundreds of pages of complicated scientific articles? This Science Comic Book explains the most important ideas about the aging process in an entertaining, but nevertheless scientifically accurate fashion. For those who want to follow up in more detail, there are references to the relevant literature in the text.

Foreword

Humans have long struggled to come to terms with the inevitability of our mortality. As Benjamin Franklin famously remarked “The only things certain in life are death and taxes”. And so we have taken for granted that each of us must age and die, but then tried hard not to think about it! Even doctors and scientists have for far too long tended to dismiss the ageing process as something that “just happens” and is “too complicated to understand”.

Fortunately, times are changing. Research on ageing is now one of the hottest subjects in science, and we see all around us that people are living longer, and longer, and longer. The ongoing increase in human life expectancy proves beyond doubt that ageing is, at least to some extent, malleable. Most of us are reaching old age in better shape than did our parents and grandparents.

So it is important to understand ageing and what causes it. Only then can we properly understand what the future might hold, both for you and me as individuals and also for our societies.

Not all of us are trained in science but the ideas can be understood by all if they are well explained. This is what Axel Kowald offers us in the delightful book with its witty illustrations by Reinhard Trummer. It is science told by an expert, but told in a different way. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I have done.
