INTRODUCTION

This book is intended to anyone who is interested in Adobe Acrobat. At the time of writing this book, you can purchase it for €23.99 per month for Adobe Acrobat Pro, or €15.59 for Adobe Acrobat standard.

The version of Acrobat I used is 2021-005-20048 and I installed it on a Mac computer. Nevertheless, there are several versions of Acrobat that you can discover on the Adobe website at the following address:

https://www.adobe.com/acrobat/pricing.html

The figure below shows different possibilities that can be used with Windows or Mac Os.

Acrobat Pro DC is available on Windows and Mac.Acrobat Standard DC works only on Windows. This version is a bit cheaper (15,59€) but with less possibilities.

Adobe Acrobat Pro is part of a set of software that is called Adobe Document Cloud. It is a group of features that provide many tools:

Editing or creating PDF files.Tracking and electronic signature. The ability to store files on desktops, mobile devices or in the cloud.Form creation with the ability to program calculations.Optical character recognition and scanning.Prepress tools to define printing parameters.

There is also a version called Adobe Acrobat Reader that is free of charge and enables you to view the content of a PDF file but without the possibility to modify it.

For mobiles, you can install a protected version for free but it will only unlock with your license number.

This book is divided in 5 chapters.

Chapter 1 shows the working environment with the different menus and the tool panel that can be customized. You will learn how to modify the quick toolbar. You will discover the properties that inform you about the identity of the document, the metadata and the markup for creating bookmarks.

Chapter 2 details how to edit the elements of a PDF file.

Chapter 3 details comments, revisions and the Document Cloud storage environment.

Chapter 4 details techniques for creating forms. You will discover how to use JavaScript to manipulate the form fields.

Chapter 5 introduces the Print Production tools that help to define many print settings in relation to the printers' machines.

I hope that reading this book will interest you and enable you to manipulate PDF documents better.

Do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] if you have any comments or questions about this book.

I will be sure to answer you.

Chapter 1 The working environment

In this chapter you will study the different menus, the toolbar and the panel that appear when a document is opened. The horizontal menu contains six possibilities: File, Edit, View, Sign, Window and Help. A second menu, Home and View, displays the names of the open files. A moving toolbar is automatically placed under this second menu.

1.1 The main menu

The following figures show different menu options that are available when working with PDF files.

Figure 1.1 : The Acrobat Pro menu

In this menu, you will find the Preferences, i.e. the software general settings. With Windows, you can access them using the Edit menu.

The preferences enable you to modify Acrobat's interface. For instance, in the View category you can set the default zoom or the displaying of the document with one or two pages.

The different settings will be detailed later in the book.
