Overnight Train to Berlin

It is Wednesday evening, just before ten. We are sitting on an overnight train, leaning our seats back. After a full working day, we're just happy to look out of the window and wait for our eyes to fall shut. A train station whizzes by, enveloped in the blue light of its display boards. It is another reminder that we are approaching our destination at great speed. Tomorrow, we will arrive in Berlin at 6 a.m., treat ourselves to a coffee and head straight to the embassy. There's not much left to do. According to the instructions, we’ll just have to show our IDs and sign one last document.

I can already hear the noise of the stamp. After one and a half years of preparation, and countless documents, emails and phone calls, we are convinced that everything is ready and that tomorrow we are going to leave the Australian Embassy as proud owners of a permanent visa. This will then free up the rest of the day for the relaxing part. The plan is to just soak up the sun on the hop-on hop-off bus, eat well and eventually head back to the station.

The train is full. My wife is just about to unpack a sandwich, when, all of a sudden, a penetrating smell starts to spread throughout the carriage. Someone behind us must have taken off their shoes. We turn up our noses, set the small air vents to "max" and repack the sandwiches. We'd rather wait until the air is clean before we eat. Or thoughts wander back. Just recently we celebrated our wedding on Mainau Island with family and friends. The floral splendour in spring is simply beautiful and the orchid show in the Palm House, perfect for wedding pictures. Later, we enjoyed the wedding dinner on a boat and docked at the jetty again, just before midnight. It was lit up with candles that led us to the lake shore, from where we launched hot air balloons that floated almost mystically above the lake and rounded off the celebration.

When my wife and I finally strolled back to the parking lot hand in hand as a newly married couple, I was so grateful. The sky above us was dotted with stars, and somehow, I realised that we had just set an important milestone for the future.

It was a very busy time back then. In a typical week, we had almost every evening booked. When I recollect, I sometimes wonder how we managed to pack so many activities into the 24 hours of a day, week after week. On the upside, we had the privilege of being married twice in the same week (both times to the same partner, of course :-). Our second wedding took place on the other side of the globe, in Australia. Not something everyone can claim.

I still remember it as if it were yesterday. As soon as the glass doors of the airport opened, a warm breeze welcomed us. The climate in Perth is very different to what we were used to, and we would have loved to have headed straight for the beach, but our next appointment was due to begin in under two hours. Everything was already prepared when we arrived at the small hill next to the hexagonal church. And so, only three days later, we celebrated our second wedding - this time with close friends who had been living in Australia for some time.

The wedding ceremony took place under a large tree: Everyone sat or stood on the grass while the wind rustled through the leaves in the background. After the service and a meal, there was just enough time to drive down to the beach and capture the moment when the sun slowly dipped into the sea.

During our honeymoon, we decided to emigrate to Australia. So, back in Switzerland, we started the visa process. I cannot remember much about the apartment we lived in, but I vividly remember the balcony. There was a magnolia tree right in front of it, which was always in full bloom on our wedding anniversary.

The visa process required much time and effort. As we were applying for a "skilled visa", it was mandatory to have our education certified by the Australian Government, which we needed to do first. Then, we had to undergo a health examination, pass an English test and fill out many more documents, which had to be translated into English by a certified translator.

Steamship to Australia

And now we are sitting on the train and can feel the wanderlust rising inside us. This is how the daring Europeans must have felt when they plunged into unknown adventures in the 19th and 20th centuries. Equipped with a ticket, they followed their indomitable conviction that they could find a better life in another country, and perhaps, even return as rich people, one day.

Hopefully, the euphoria also carried them through the moment when they shouted a final "Farewell!" to their friends and relatives, before a huge steamer would carry them into a far country. From then on, they would probably only receive the most important news via telegram - such as the birth of a child or the death of their parents. No matter what thoughts they were still dwelling on, departure was approaching, inevitably. As soon as the ship's sirens sounded, everyone knew that there was no turning back. The steamer would soon break away from the harbour, and their friends at the wharf would wave one last time before slowly disappearing into the distance. The decision had been made.

Nowadays, entering a new world doesn’t feel quite so dramatic. Very few people dare to make a new start from which there is no turning back. Nevertheless, most of us experience moments in our lives when we must decide because a major change of course is called for.

I would like to encourage you to make such a decision in the next few days and embark on your own personal journey into God’s world. Many have already undertaken this journey and found much more than they expected. Some have written down their experiences and left us valuable tips. In this book, I summarise some of these tips, and hope they will be of value to you.

Intel

If you want to get to know a new world, you will soon realise that you are in for a challenging task. A new world, usually, is not only structured differently, but it also works according to different rules you might not be familiar with. To help you understand what I mean, here is an example from my professional environment. It shows you how differently other worlds can function from those with which you are familiar.

Thunderstorm in Vietnam

To do so, we must travel back in time a good fifty years, to the year, 1968. There is a war raging in Vietnam. Five hundred thousand US soldiers are deployed, and the "Rolling Thunder" air offensive is extended, once again. The Americans use their technological superiority and fly 304,000 air strikes. They drop far more bombs than in the Second World War. Nevertheless, they fail to gain the upper hand. In a country where large areas are sparsely populated and densely forested, the air force is unable to develop any striking power.
